Use Gaming Focus (or Do Not Disturb) to filter notifications, Game Mode to prioritize game performance, and Low Power Mode when extending battery life matters more than maximum frame rate. These controls solve different problems: Focus manages interruptions, Game Mode manages CPU/GPU priority, and Low Power Mode limits power use with visible performance trade-offs.
Choose the setting for the problem you actually have
iPhone’s gaming-related controls are not interchangeable. A notification filter will not make a game render faster, and a performance mode is not a promise of longer play time. Start with the outcome you want, then enable only the control that supports it.

Apple’s Focus, Game Mode, Low Power Mode and Power Modes guidance was current on 13 October 2026. Names and locations can change with a major iOS release, so compare the labels on your iPhone with the paths below.
Set up Gaming Focus to stop unwanted notifications
Gaming Focus is the most targeted way to reduce interruptions during a session. It is a Focus profile, so you decide which people and apps may still notify you instead of assuming that every alert will be blocked.

Configure Gaming Focus
- Open Settings.
- Tap Focus.
- Select Gaming. If Gaming is not already configured, follow the on-screen setup prompts.
- Choose the people who are allowed to notify you. Include anyone whose call or message could be urgent.
- Choose the apps that may send notifications while Gaming Focus is active. Leave out chat, mail or social apps that routinely interrupt your play unless you genuinely need them.
- Review the Focus options and activate Gaming when you start playing without a controller.
When a wireless gaming controller is connected, Apple says Gaming Focus turns on by default. Players who use touch controls or another input method can select Gaming Focus manually from the Focus controls.
Keep urgent contacts reachable
Focus filtering is customizable, not an absolute block on every possible alert. If you need a family member, colleague or care provider to reach you, add that person to the allowed list rather than relying on a blanket silence setting. The same principle applies to apps: permit only the apps whose alerts have a clear reason to break through.
What Gaming Focus does not do
Apple describes Focus as notification filtering. It does not establish that Gaming Focus suppresses every notice generated inside a game, nor that it prevents a game from displaying its own messages, banners or other content. Treat it as a way to manage iPhone notifications from people and apps.

For a quick change before a match, use the Control Center shortcut instead of opening Settings.

- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner on a Face ID iPhone, or up from the bottom on an iPhone with a Home button.
- Tap Focus.
- Tap Do Not Disturb.
Do Not Disturb is itself a Focus option, so its behavior depends on the people and apps you have permitted in Focus settings. If an urgent contact must get through, configure allowed people first; do not assume that tapping Do Not Disturb automatically blocks or permits every caller in the way you want.
Use Gaming Focus when you want a saved gaming-specific list. Use Do Not Disturb when you want the quickest temporary switch and do not need to change the profile’s detailed rules.
Understand what Game Mode changes
Game Mode is a performance feature, not a battery-saver switch. Apple states: “Game Mode optimises your gaming experience by giving your game the highest priority access to your CPU and GPU, lowering usage for background tasks.” The intended result is smoother, more consistent frame rates and better responsiveness when the game supports the feature.

Check the requirements
- Your iPhone must be running iOS 18 or later.
- The title you are playing must be a supported game.
If either condition is missing, the Game Mode behavior described by Apple should not be assumed. Update iOS only after checking that your iPhone supports the release, and check the game’s current support information when a title does not behave as expected. Apple’s support description does not establish a universal compatibility list for every game.
Wireless accessories and latency
Apple also says Game Mode doubles Bluetooth sampling for wireless accessories such as game controllers and AirPods. That is intended to reduce input and audio latency. A controller can therefore have two separate relationships with iPhone: connecting one can activate Gaming Focus by default, while Game Mode can improve how supported games communicate with the accessory.
Do not treat Game Mode as extra battery life
Apple presents Game Mode as a way to prioritize the game and reduce background-task use. The cited documentation does not promise a quantified battery saving or additional playing time. If your objective is fewer interruptions, pair the appropriate Focus profile with the game; do not enable Game Mode expecting it to replace Low Power Mode.

Turn on Low Power Mode when battery conservation is the priority
Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting selected features and background activity. Apple lists reduced brightness, disabled Background App Refresh and fewer visual effects among its effects. Some tasks may run more slowly.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Power Mode.
- Turn on Low Power Mode.
iPhone 14 and earlier
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Turn on Low Power Mode.
Apple also documents adding the Low Power Mode control to Control Center. That is useful when you want to switch modes immediately before launching a game without navigating through Settings.
Understand the frame-rate trade-off
On iPhones with ProMotion displays, Apple says Low Power Mode limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second. If a game is designed around a higher refresh rate, this can make motion feel less fluid even though the phone is using less power. Low Power Mode can also make some operations slower. Decide whether longer battery endurance or the highest display and task performance matters more for that session.

Know when it turns off
Apple’s power-mode guidance says Low Power Mode turns off automatically when the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. If you want it for the next gaming session, check the Battery setting again after charging rather than assuming it remained enabled.

Adaptive Power is model-dependent and is not described by Apple as a gaming-specific guarantee. Apple says it can lower brightness, limit background activity, make performance adjustments and turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%.

Apple lists Adaptive Power as on by default for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. On the page’s listed iPhone 16 family, iPhone 16e and iPhone 15 Pro models, it is off by default. Those defaults do not establish availability for every iPhone, so check the Battery or Power Mode settings on your exact model.
Adaptive Power is a reasonable choice when you want iPhone to react to battery conditions without manually watching the charge level. It is less predictable for a performance-sensitive gaming session because it may make brightness, background-activity or performance adjustments. For a tournament, benchmark or high-refresh play, review its state beforehand.
Build a gaming setup for different priorities
Priority: no interruptions
- Configure Gaming Focus with the people and apps that are genuinely allowed.
- Connect a compatible wireless controller if you use one; Apple says that connection turns Gaming Focus on by default.
- If you need an immediate, broad silence instead, activate Do Not Disturb from Control Center’s Focus control.
Priority: maximum responsiveness
- Confirm that the iPhone runs iOS 18 or later.
- Confirm that the game is supported.
- Use Game Mode for the performance behavior Apple documents.
- Avoid turning on Low Power Mode if its 60-fps ProMotion limit or slower-task warning conflicts with your game’s performance goal.
Priority: longest practical battery session
- Turn on Low Power Mode using the Battery path for your iPhone generation.
- Expect reduced brightness, no Background App Refresh and fewer visual effects.
- On a ProMotion iPhone, accept the 60-fps refresh-rate limit.
- If your model supports Adaptive Power, decide whether its automatic adjustments suit the session.
Game Mode and Low Power Mode address opposing priorities: one favors game resource access, while the other restricts selected activity to reduce consumption. Apple does not publish a measured battery-life gain for a named game or a guaranteed frame-rate result when the controls are combined. Actual drain varies with the game and device conditions, so use the mode that matches the session rather than expecting a universal best combination.
Troubleshoot common surprises
Notifications still appear
- Open Settings > Focus > Gaming and check the allowed people and apps list.
- Verify that Gaming Focus is actually active; a controller activates it by default, but touch-only players may need to select it manually.
- Remember that Focus filters iPhone notifications and does not guarantee suppression of content generated inside the game.
The game feels less smooth after enabling Low Power Mode
- On a ProMotion iPhone, check whether the 60-fps limit explains the change.
- Consider whether slower task execution or reduced visual effects is affecting the experience.
- Turn Low Power Mode off when frame-rate behavior is more important than conserving charge.
Game Mode does not seem to be available
- Check the iOS version; Apple requires iOS 18 or later.
- Check whether the particular game is supported.
- Do not infer support from another title or from the presence of a wireless controller. Accessory compatibility and game support are separate questions.
Battery behavior changes unexpectedly
- Low Power Mode may have switched off after the iPhone charged to 80% or higher.
- Adaptive Power may be making automatic adjustments on a supported model, including enabling Low Power Mode at 20% battery.
- Check Settings > Battery before playing and verify which mode is active.
Accessory compatibility is a separate check
A wireless gaming controller can be useful, and Apple’s documentation specifically describes its relationship with Gaming Focus and Game Mode. That does not establish compatibility for every iPhone model or every game. Before buying or pairing a controller, verify iPhone compatibility and confirm that the game supports the controller’s input features. No single setting can compensate for an accessory or title that does not support the connection.
