Use the Apple Home app to decide who can control your accessories and what they can do. Home owners can invite someone as a Resident or Guest, allow or block remote control, grant or withhold permission to add and edit accessories, schedule guest access, and remove people. Separate iPhone privacy controls govern which third-party apps can read Home data, while supported Apple Home routers can limit an accessory’s network connections.

Remote resident access and guest access require a configured home hub, such as a HomePod or Apple TV 4K. Local control on the same home Wi-Fi works differently and can remain available without that hub. The controls below apply to Apple Home sharing; an accessory maker’s own app may have separate accounts and permissions.

What each control actually governs

These settings solve different access problems, so changing one does not automatically change the others.

Control area Who or what it affects Reach Main decisions
Home app people settings Residents and guests invited to your Apple Home Accessory control Role, local versus remote use, schedule, and administrative rights
HomeKit privacy permission Third-party iPhone apps Home data exposed to apps Allow or revoke access to names, rooms, accessories, and related Home data
Home Accessory Security Compatible accessories on a supported home network Network connections Restrict to Home, Automatic, or No Restriction
Activity History Eligible home members viewing recorded accessory events Historical information Turn event history on or off; history can cover up to 30 days
Location Services for Home Location-based Home features Presence automations and status Allow or stop Home from using an iPhone’s location

Think of these as separate layers: a person’s invitation determines whether they are a household user, app privacy determines whether software can read Home information, and router security determines what an accessory can reach on the network.

Check the prerequisites before changing sharing

Apple’s current iPhone guide for iOS 26 identifies a home hub as the requirement for remote sharing features. Apple lists HomePod and Apple TV 4K as examples. The hub allows the home to remain reachable when the owner or resident is away and enables management of shared-user permissions on the latest Home architecture.

Without a hub, the documented path is narrower: the owner must send invitations while at home and connected to the home Wi-Fi, and shared users can control accessories only while connected to that same network. Guest access and remote resident control are therefore not equivalent to ordinary local control.

  • Keep the owner’s and invitee’s Apple devices updated.
  • Make sure iCloud Home is enabled and two-factor authentication is turned on.
  • Use the current Apple Home architecture on the devices participating in the home.
  • Verify that a compatible home hub is configured before attempting remote or guest sharing.

Apple’s labels can change between iOS releases. The paths below use the iOS 26 labels documented in the current guide; if a label differs slightly, look for the same control inside Home Settings.

Invite someone as a Resident or Guest

The role you choose determines the person’s default reach. A resident is intended for someone who belongs to the household. A guest is intended for limited, often temporary access to selected security-related accessories.

Invite a Resident

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Tap Add, then choose Add People.
  3. Select Resident when prompted for the role.
  4. Send the invitation and have the recipient accept it with their Apple account.

Residents can use all accessories in the home while local and can be granted remote access for use away from the home. Apple describes the role as: “Home Residents have local and optional remote access to all accessories in the home at any time.” Remote access is a separate permission that you can later turn off.

Invite a Guest

  1. Open Home, tap Add, and choose Add People.
  2. Choose Guest.
  3. Select the eligible doors, locks, and security accessories the guest may use.
  4. Choose an access window: Anytime, Specific Dates, or Specific Days & Times.
  5. Send the invitation and have the guest accept it.

Guest access is local-only, limited to the accessories you select, and constrained by the schedule you set. Apple’s iPhone guide says guest access requires iOS 18 or later; the current guide is written for iOS 26. A home hub is also required for guest access.

Choose the role by real-world need

Need Use Why
Household member who may use everything Resident All accessories are available locally; remote use can be enabled separately.
Cleaner, sitter, contractor, or short-term visitor Guest Limit access to selected doors, locks, and security accessories and set a schedule.
Someone who must manage automations or add devices Resident with administrative permission Guest access does not provide home-management rights.

Change a resident’s remote and administrative permissions

Control of an accessory and control of the home are different privileges. A resident can be allowed to operate devices without being allowed to change the Home configuration.

  1. Open Home.
  2. Tap More (the three-dot button), then Home Settings.
  3. Select the resident’s name.
  4. Review and change the available permission switches.

Control Accessories Remotely

This setting governs whether the resident can control the home from outside the home network. Turn it off to limit that person to the home’s Wi-Fi network. The setting does not remove their local access to accessories.

Add and Edit Accessories

This separate setting governs administration. Depending on the Home version, it controls whether the resident may add or remove accessories, scenes, automations, and other users. Someone can therefore have remote control while still being unable to reconfigure the home, or have local control without either remote or administrative rights.

On the latest Home architecture, a home hub is required to manage these remote-access and shared-user permissions. If the controls are missing, confirm that the hub and software prerequisites are satisfied before treating the absence as a permissions problem.

Remove a former household member completely

  1. Open Home and go to More > Home Settings.
  2. Select the person’s name.
  3. Choose the option to remove that person from the home and confirm.

Removal ends their Apple Home sharing relationship, but it may not revoke access granted through an accessory manufacturer’s separate app or account. Check every related app, web account, invitation, and household membership and remove the person there as well when appropriate. This matters especially for cameras, alarms, locks, and products that maintain their own cloud accounts.

Control which iPhone apps can read Home data

Inviting a person and authorizing an app are different actions. To review app access, open Settings > Privacy & Security > HomeKit. Apple lists apps that have requested HomeKit access on this screen.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap HomeKit.
  4. Review the listed apps and turn permission on or off for each one.

An approved app may be able to read Home data such as room names and accessory names. Revoking this permission blocks the app’s HomeKit data access; it does not remove residents or guests and does not change their ability to operate accessories through the Home app.

Use this screen when an app no longer needs Home information, when you installed an app only temporarily, or when you are auditing what software can identify rooms and devices. If a person still has access through a separate accessory app, changing HomeKit privacy permission will not remove that account-level access.

Restrict an accessory’s network connections

Supported Apple Home routers add a network-level control that is independent of people’s roles. The feature requires compatible router hardware and a home hub.

  1. Open Home.
  2. Tap More > Home Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Network & Routers.
  4. Enable Apple Home Accessory Security.
  5. Select the accessory and choose a policy.
Policy Effect Trade-off
Restrict to Home Allows the accessory to connect only to the home hub. Apple cautions that firmware updates or other services may stop working.
Automatic Uses Apple’s default managed behavior for the accessory. Less restrictive than a home-only policy; exact behavior depends on the accessory.
No Restriction Leaves the accessory’s network access unrestricted by this Home feature. Provides compatibility at the cost of this additional network boundary.

Start with Automatic unless you have a reason to impose a stricter boundary and a plan to verify updates and cloud-dependent functions afterward. If an accessory stops updating or loses a service after you choose Restrict to Home, return to Automatic or No Restriction and check the accessory’s own requirements.

Manage activity history and location-based behavior

Activity History

To change event logging, open Home > More > Home Settings > Activity. You can turn Activity History on or off. Eligible home members, except guests, may view activity for supported devices such as locks, garage doors, security systems, and adaptive temperature thermostats. Apple says the history can display up to 30 days.

Turning history off permanently deletes previous activity. This is a privacy decision about records of events, not a control over whether a resident can operate a lock or other accessory.

Location Services for Home

On iOS 26, Home can use an iPhone’s location for Adaptive Temperature presence states such as at home, away, or on the way home. To stop that use, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Home and change the permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disabling this location use also affects other HomeKit features that rely on location. It does not withdraw a person’s resident or guest invitation and does not disable ordinary accessory-control permissions.

Troubleshoot invitations and missing controls

The invitation cannot be sent or accepted

  • Update both devices and confirm that iCloud Home is enabled.
  • Confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled for the relevant Apple accounts.
  • Check that the owner and invitee have not blocked one another.
  • Temporarily check VPN or third-party security software, which can interfere with Home communication.
  • Verify that the owner is home and on the home Wi-Fi when no hub is configured.

Remote control is unavailable

Confirm that a home hub is configured and online. Without one, shared users are limited to local control on the home network, and the owner cannot use the full remote-sharing management path.

A resident can control devices but cannot change the Home

Review Add and Edit Accessories in that person’s Home Settings entry. Remote control and administrative rights are independent; enabling one does not enable the other.

A removed person still controls an accessory

Check the accessory maker’s app and associated account. Remove the person from those services as well as from Apple Home, then change any shared passwords or access codes that were known to them.

A device breaks after network restriction

Return the accessory from Restrict to Home to Automatic while you test. Firmware delivery and other cloud or vendor services may require broader network access.

A practical access-audit checklist

  • List every person in Home > More > Home Settings and verify whether each should be a Resident or Guest.
  • For each resident, decide separately whether remote control and Home administration are needed.
  • For each guest, limit the accessory list and set an end date or recurring schedule where possible.
  • Review Settings > Privacy & Security > HomeKit and revoke unused app permissions.
  • Inspect accessory-maker apps for accounts that Apple Home removal does not affect.
  • Review Activity History retention and who can view events.
  • Audit location permission if presence-based automations are not appropriate for a household member.
  • On supported routers, choose the least permissive network policy that still permits updates and required services.
