The iPhone 17 Pro is the best iPhone for photography if you want the widest choice of rear-camera perspectives and the option to shoot RAW. Its three 48MP rear cameras cover main, ultra-wide and telephoto views. The iPhone 17 is a better fit for many people who mainly use the main and ultra-wide cameras and do not need telephoto reach or RAW capture. The 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max share the same photography camera setup, so choose between them for size and screen preference—not for a camera upgrade.
Which iPhone should photographers choose?
For the broadest camera toolkit among the models covered here, choose the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max. The dedicated telephoto camera adds reach for distant subjects, while the ultra-wide camera suits expansive scenes and the main camera handles everyday shooting. ProRAW is useful if you plan to edit your photos with more control than a standard processed image provides.
Choose the iPhone 17 if you mostly take everyday photos with the main camera, occasionally want an ultra-wide view, and do not expect to use a dedicated telephoto lens or RAW workflow. Its simpler camera setup can be enough without paying for features you will not use. The reviewed sources do not establish current local prices, so compare the actual price and storage configuration available where you live before deciding.

What makes the iPhone 17 Pro the most versatile camera choice?
Three rear cameras cover more viewpoints
Apple lists a 48MP Fusion Main camera at 24mm equivalent and ƒ/1.78, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13mm and ƒ/2.2, and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100mm (4x) and ƒ/2.8. The main view is suited to general-purpose framing, the ultra-wide captures more of a scene, and the telephoto helps frame distant subjects more tightly without moving closer. These are Apple’s specifications in its iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications.
Understand the 4x and 8x telephoto wording
The Pro’s listed telephoto camera is 100mm equivalent, or 4x. Apple also lists a 200mm (8x) optical-quality option. That wording does not mean the phone has a separate native 8x optical lens: the 8x option is described as optical-quality. Apple lists a 16x optical-quality zoom range and up to 40x digital zoom, too; digital zoom is not the same as an additional optical lens.

Macro and RAW are specialist advantages
Apple lists 48MP macro photography, which is useful when you want to focus on a close subject. But a high-resolution macro mode does not guarantee top-tier close-up results: Amateur Photographer describes the Pro’s macro performance as weak relative to some Android competitors. Treat that as the publication’s assessment, not a universal controlled result.
ProRAW is most relevant if you intend to edit images and want a RAW file in your workflow. If you mainly share camera-roll photos without substantial editing, RAW support may not change your choice. Apple also lists video-focused features including ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2; those matter more to creators who record and edit video than to someone choosing a phone only for casual stills.

Should you buy the iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max?
For photography camera coverage, either model offers the same setup. DPReview and Amateur Photographer both describe the Pro and Pro Max camera systems as shared. Pick the Pro Max if you want the larger phone and display; pick the Pro if you prefer a more compact device. The Pro Max may also suit someone seeking the 2TB storage option, as DPReview notes, but storage preference is separate from camera performance.
Is the standard iPhone 17 good enough for photography?
For many people, yes. Amateur Photographer describes the iPhone 17 as a solid all-rounder and lists a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide and an 18MP front camera. Its main compromise against the Pro is not that it lacks a capable everyday camera; it is that it has no dedicated telephoto camera and no RAW shooting, according to the guide.

Choose the standard model if those omissions match how you shoot. If you regularly photograph distant subjects, want the framing flexibility of a telephoto camera, or plan to edit RAW files, the Pro’s extra camera and workflow options are more relevant. Do not pay for Pro features simply because they sound advanced; consider whether you will actually use them.
What should you check before buying an older iPhone?
An older Pro may be worth considering, but the generation name alone does not establish good value. Compare the exact device’s camera lenses, condition, storage, warranty and current price with the iPhone 17 models. DPReview notes that the previous iPhone 16 had a main camera like the iPhone 17, but a smaller 12MP ultra-wide and an older selfie camera. Those differences may matter if you often use ultra-wide framing or take front-camera photos.
DPReview also cautions that the iPhone 17e’s 48MP Fusion Main designation does not mean it uses the same sensor as the standard iPhone 17: the comparison describes the 17e sensor as smaller and notes limitations in low light, stabilization, portrait controls, Photographic Styles, Camera Control and front-camera orientation. If considering either model, compare the relevant features against how you shoot rather than relying on a shared megapixel label.
How to decide based on the photos you take
- You photograph distant subjects: Favor the iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max for its dedicated 100mm-equivalent 4x telephoto camera.
- You mainly shoot everyday scenes and wide views: The iPhone 17’s main and ultra-wide cameras may be sufficient.
- You edit RAW images: Favor a Pro model for ProRAW support.
- You often take close-ups: The Pro lists 48MP macro photography, but keep in mind Amateur Photographer’s criticism of its macro performance.
- You care about phone size: Choose between Pro and Pro Max by ergonomics and display preference; their photography camera setups match.
- You are shopping an earlier generation: Verify the specific model, its condition and current price rather than assuming an older Pro is automatically a bargain.
