Which iPhone 17 settings should you change first? Start with access and recovery: set up Face ID, choose a strong passcode, and confirm Find My iPhone is enabled. Then review privacy permissions, inspect Battery insights before disabling features, and adjust the display, notifications, camera, and accessibility controls to match how you use the phone.
This checklist follows Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 26, which includes iPhone 17 models. You do not need to change every option. The right setup balances security, privacy, battery endurance, comfort, and the features you actually use.
1. Secure access and recovery before anything else
A new phone is most valuable when you can unlock it quickly, keep other people out, and recover it if it is lost. Complete these checks before customizing appearance or installing a large number of apps.

- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
- Enter your current passcode, or create one when prompted.
- Choose Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen positioning instructions.
- Review the services that can use Face ID, such as iPhone unlock, app sign-in, and purchase authorization.
Apple says Face ID data does not leave the device. Enable only the uses that fit your situation, and keep a passcode that is difficult for someone else to guess and that you do not reuse elsewhere. Face ID is convenient, but the passcode remains the fallback for situations such as a restart or repeated failed recognition.

Turn on Find My iPhone
- Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
- Turn on Find My iPhone.
- Review the related options shown on that screen and leave them enabled when they support your recovery plan.
Find My can help locate a missing or stolen iPhone. If you cannot open the Find My app, Apple says you can use iCloud.com to access the service. Test that you know the Apple Account credentials needed to sign in; recovery is harder if the only device that receives verification codes is the one you lost.
Review Lock Screen and Emergency SOS access
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and inspect the Allow Access When Locked list. Decide whether items such as Control Center, Notification Center, or accessories should be reachable without unlocking. More Lock Screen access is convenient, while less access exposes less information if another person picks up the phone.
Then open Settings > Emergency SOS. Read the available call and alert behavior and choose settings you can use reliably under stress. Apple documents these areas but does not prescribe one configuration for every owner, so consider your location, health needs, travel habits, and whether accidental activation is a concern.

2. Check app permissions instead of disabling privacy features blindly
To review permissions, open Settings > Privacy & Security. Each category lists apps that have requested access. Apple’s hardware-access guide describes the list this way: “The list shows the apps that requested access.” Open a category, inspect each app, and change access only when you understand what the app needs.
Location Services
- Tap Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Leave Location Services on if you rely on maps, weather, device recovery, automation, or other location-aware features.
- For each app, choose the least access that still supports its purpose, such as Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always when that option is offered.
- Use the system-services area at the bottom to review Apple services separately from app permissions.
Turning off Location Services globally can limit app and system functionality. A per-app decision usually provides a better balance between data minimization and useful features. If an app works without precise location, consider turning off Precise Location for that app rather than removing location access entirely.
Photos, Contacts, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, and Local Network
Open each category under Privacy & Security and remove access an app no longer needs. A photo editor may need selected photos rather than your entire library; a messaging app may need contacts only if you use contact discovery; and a smart-home app may need Local Network access to find devices on your Wi-Fi.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Diagnose battery use before switching off features
Open Settings > Battery and read the app and system activity, battery suggestions, and Insights before applying blanket battery-saving changes. Apple notes that a recent iOS update or initial device setup can temporarily increase background work and heat while the phone finishes indexing, restoring data, or completing other tasks. If battery life looks worse immediately after an update, wait a few days and check again.
Use Adaptive Power on iPhone 17
iPhone 17 models support Adaptive Power with iOS 26 or later. When enabled, it can make adjustments on days with higher-than-usual use and may turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20 percent. The 20 percent value is an operating threshold, not a promise of a specific extra number of hours.
To look for it, open Settings > Battery and review the power-management options shown for your model. If the switch is unavailable, confirm that the phone is running iOS 26 or later and that you are using an iPhone 17 model supported by the feature.
Know what Low Power Mode changes
Low Power Mode is useful when you need to stretch a charge, but it reduces or disables some background and visual functions. Apple lists effects including less frequent Mail fetching, disabled Hey Siri listening, reduced Background App Refresh, and some visual-effect changes. It turns off automatically once the charge rises above 80 percent.
Use it for a long travel day, an outage, or another temporary constraint rather than assuming it is the best permanent configuration. Check Battery Insights first so you can address a high-use app or process without sacrificing features everywhere.

Read the Daily Usage chart correctly
The Daily Usage chart and Adaptive Power require iOS 26 or later. Compare activity by app and by time rather than reacting to one percentage. A navigation session, camera recording, game, video call, or restore operation can legitimately dominate a day’s usage. If an unfamiliar app remains high after normal setup work has finished, update it, review its background permissions, or remove it if you no longer need it.
4. Set the display for comfort and sensible power use
Leave Auto-Brightness on unless you have a specific reason not to
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
- Confirm that Auto-Brightness is enabled.
Auto-Brightness responds to ambient light. Dimming the display can extend battery life, and Apple notes that disabling Auto-Brightness may increase power use. If the screen seems too bright or too dim, give the sensor a moment to adapt and adjust the brightness manually when needed rather than turning the automatic control off immediately.
Choose True Tone, Night Shift, and Dark Mode by preference
True Tone adapts display color and intensity to the surrounding light. It can make the screen look more natural in changing rooms, but some photo or video workflows require a consistent appearance, in which case you may prefer to disable it temporarily.

Night Shift shifts colors warmer and can be scheduled for particular hours. It is a comfort preference; Apple’s setting does not establish that it improves sleep for every person.
Dark Mode changes the interface appearance. Select it from Settings > Display & Brightness, or schedule it there. Do not assume it produces a fixed battery saving amount; the effect depends on the display content and your usage.
5. Reduce notification noise without missing important alerts
Open Settings > Notifications and work through apps individually. For each one, decide whether you need alerts on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, as banners, with sounds, or in a scheduled summary.
- Keep immediate alerts for people, security, travel, two-factor authentication, and time-sensitive services.
- Send promotional, shopping, and routine social updates to a scheduled summary or turn them off.
- Disable sounds for apps where visual alerts are enough.
- Use Focus profiles when the same rules should apply during work, sleep, driving, or personal time.
This approach preserves high-value interruptions while reducing the number of times you pick up the phone. It also avoids the opposite mistake: disabling all notifications and later missing an important alert.

6. Change camera settings only for a defined workflow
Open Settings > Camera and review the options for formats, resolution, grid, and other controls. There is no universally correct camera configuration, so tie each change to a practical goal.
For composition
Turn on the grid if you want visual guides for horizons, symmetry, or framing. It changes the preview overlay, not the captured image.
For storage and sharing
Choose formats and resolutions that fit where you keep photos and how you share them. Higher-resolution or more demanding formats can create larger files and may require compatible apps or services. If you regularly run short of storage, review file size and transfer habits before selecting the highest available setting everywhere.
For repeatable video work
Set resolution and frame-rate choices to match the workflow you repeat, such as family clips, social posts, or editing on another device. Avoid changing several camera options at once; make one adjustment, record a short sample, and verify that the result imports and plays as expected.

Open Settings > Accessibility and browse the categories that address your needs or preferences. Useful changes can include larger text, stronger contrast, spoken content, touch accommodations, captions, hearing-device support, or motion adjustments. These are not mandatory optimizations. Enable them when they make reading, hearing, movement, or interaction easier, and turn off options that interfere with an established workflow.
If another person regularly uses your iPhone, configure accessibility for the person who needs it rather than copying a generic checklist. Revisit the settings after an iOS update if a control appears to have moved; Apple’s labels and category placement can change.

8. Use Settings search when a path is hard to find
The Settings app includes a search field. Tap it and enter a plain-language term such as volume, location, brightness, or notifications. Search is especially helpful when a setting is nested under Accessibility, Privacy & Security, or another category you would not expect.
Search results can vary by model and software version. Open the result and read the surrounding options before changing a switch so you understand whether it affects one app, the whole device, or a system service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Set up Face ID and a strong passcode.
- Confirm Find My iPhone at Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
- Review Lock Screen access and Emergency SOS behavior.
- Inspect Location Services and the Photos, Contacts, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, and Local Network permission lists.
- Open Battery, read Insights, and wait a few days after setup or an update before judging unusual drain.
- Enable or evaluate Adaptive Power, and use Low Power Mode when its feature trade-offs are acceptable.
- Check Auto-Brightness, then choose True Tone, Night Shift, and Dark Mode according to comfort and visual work.
- Trim notifications app by app.
- Adjust camera settings only for a stated storage, composition, or video requirement.
- Finish with Accessibility and Settings search for anything specific you still need.
Common problems and the appropriate fix
Battery life is poor on the first day
Check Battery activity and Insights first. Setup, restoring a backup, indexing, and a recent update can temporarily increase background work. Keep the phone connected to power and on a reliable network when appropriate, then reassess after several days. Do not disable unrelated features based on a single early reading.
An app stopped working after a privacy change
Return to Settings > Privacy & Security, open the relevant category, and restore the narrowest permission that supports the feature. For example, a camera app needs Camera access to capture images, while a nearby-device app may need Bluetooth or Local Network access. If the purpose is unclear, leave access off and check the app’s explanation before granting it.
You cannot locate a lost iPhone
Use Find My from another Apple device or sign in through iCloud.com. If Find My iPhone was not enabled before the loss, location recovery options are substantially limited, which is why the check belongs at the start of setup.
Notifications are still overwhelming
Return to Settings > Notifications, sort decisions by urgency, and remove Lock Screen or sound delivery from low-value apps instead of silencing everything. A Focus profile can handle recurring periods such as work or sleep.
