After the initial setup, change the settings that protect access and recovery first: create a passcode, configure Face ID or Touch ID when your model supports it, turn on Find My iPad, and verify your Apple Account recovery options. Then review privacy permissions and tune Auto-Lock, notifications, Focus, display, battery, keyboard, and accessibility controls to suit the way you use the tablet.
These are priorities to review, not mandatory values. Menu names and available features vary by iPad model, iPadOS version, region, and account status. If a control is not where the path below suggests, use the search field at the top of Settings and enter the setting’s name.
Start with the settings that protect the iPad
A new iPad can be convenient immediately, but its most important post-setup work is securing access and making recovery possible. Complete these checks before installing many apps or storing sensitive files.
Set a passcode and choose biometrics
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, depending on the model. If no passcode is set, choose Turn Passcode On and follow the prompts. You can use a custom numeric code or an alphanumeric code; choose a code you can remember but that another person is unlikely to guess.

Apple states that setting a passcode turns on data protection, encrypting iPad data with 256-bit AES encryption. Treat the passcode as the underlying security key even when you normally unlock with a fingerprint or face scan: iPadOS periodically requires the passcode after a restart, after certain security events, or when biometric authentication has not been used for a while.
On supported models, select Set Up Face ID or Set Up Touch ID. You can then decide whether the biometric may unlock the iPad, authorize purchases, fill passwords, or authenticate in apps. Apple says Face ID and Touch ID data stays on the device and is not saved elsewhere. If the iPad is shared, remember that every enrolled fingerprint or alternate appearance can unlock it; remove an enrollment you no longer trust from the same settings page.
The passcode screen also includes an optional Erase Data control. When enabled, the iPad erases itself after ten consecutive failed passcode attempts. This can protect data on a lost device, but it also creates a serious risk if a child or someone unfamiliar with the code repeatedly tries to unlock it. Enable it only if you maintain a reliable backup and accept that recovery requires restoring the iPad.

Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPad and enable it. Find My can help locate a misplaced or stolen iPad and supports the account-based protections that make a lost device harder for another person to use. Confirm that the Apple Account shown at the top of Settings is yours before changing this option.
Location services must be available for location-based Find My features. If you are checking a family member’s device, make sure the iPad is signed in to the intended account and appears in the Find My app on another trusted Apple device or at the account’s device list.
Verify Apple Account recovery details
Tap your name at the top of Settings to review account security, trusted phone numbers, recovery contacts, subscriptions, and devices signed in to the account. Remove an old device you no longer control and confirm that the email address and phone number used for verification are current. Losing access to both the iPad and the account’s recovery methods can make a reset or data restoration much more difficult.

Decide what should sync to iCloud
In Settings > [your name], open iCloud and inspect each service rather than accepting every switch automatically. Depending on the apps and account, the list may include Photos, iCloud Drive, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, Messages, passwords, and device backups.

Choose data by device role
If the iPad is your main reading and work device, syncing documents, notes, contacts, and passwords may make it more useful. If it is a shared or occasional tablet, limit personal data and review who can unlock it. For photos and files, check available iCloud storage before enabling large libraries; a full account can stop new data from syncing even though the local copy remains on the iPad.
Consider Advanced Data Protection carefully
Advanced Data Protection is an optional setting at Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection. It provides stronger end-to-end protection for additional iCloud categories, but it changes the recovery responsibility. Apple requires a recovery contact or a recovery key because Apple cannot recover data protected by this feature if you lose access and have no recovery method.
Before enabling it, set up the offered recovery method, store a recovery key somewhere separate from the iPad, and ensure a chosen recovery contact understands what assistance may be required. Do not turn on the feature merely because it sounds more secure if you are unlikely to maintain those recovery details.
Review privacy permissions before installing more apps
Open Settings > Privacy & Security. Review the categories that can expose personal information or sensors, including Location Services, Photos, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Bluetooth, and Local Network. iPadOS lets you change these choices later, so an initial denial is not permanent.
Match access to the app’s job
- Location: A mapping or delivery app may need location while in use; a simple calculator usually does not. Choose a narrower option when it still supports the feature you need.
- Photos: Give an editor access only to selected photos when that is sufficient instead of the entire library.
- Camera and microphone: Allow them for video calls, recording, or scanning apps you trust. Revisit access after you stop using those features.
- Contacts: Grant access to apps that genuinely need address-book matching or sharing, not merely because a prompt appears during first launch.
- Bluetooth and Local Network: These permissions can be useful for accessories, printers, media devices, or local collaboration. Turn them off for apps that have no clear reason to discover nearby devices.
Also inspect Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking if it is present on your version of iPadOS. Permission choices should reflect your own balance between app functionality and privacy; there is no single configuration that fits every user.

Set Auto-Lock for your security and routine
Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. A shorter timeout locks an unattended iPad sooner, reducing the period in which someone could use an already-unlocked device. A longer timeout avoids repeated unlocking while reading a recipe, sheet music, or a document.
Choose a value based on where the iPad is used. For a tablet carried outside the home or used in shared spaces, favor a shorter interval. For desk or kitchen use, a longer interval may be more practical. Auto-Lock does not replace a passcode: it only determines when the screen turns off and the device requires authentication again.
Control interruptions with Notifications and Focus
Trim notification noise
Open Settings > Notifications and review apps one by one. For each app, decide whether notifications appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, as banners, or with sounds and badges. Turn off alerts that are not time-sensitive, especially for games, shopping, and promotional apps. Keeping essential alerts visible makes them easier to notice.

In the notification settings, choose whether previews appear always, only when unlocked, or never. The right choice depends on whether other people can see the iPad when it is unattended.
Create Focus modes for different situations
Use Settings > Focus to configure modes such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Work, Reading, or Sleep. Select the people and apps allowed to interrupt, set a schedule or location trigger if useful, and decide whether the mode should sync across your Apple devices. A Focus mode is more flexible than silencing every notification because it lets genuinely important contacts through.
Adjust the display without assuming one ideal value
In Settings > Display & Brightness, set brightness, appearance, text size, and related options for your environment. Automatic brightness can adapt to changing light; manual adjustment may be preferable when you need a consistent level for photo or design work. Light and Dark appearance can be selected manually or scheduled.
Review True Tone, Night Shift, and any model-specific display controls. True Tone changes the color balance to match ambient light, while Night Shift shifts the display warmer on a schedule. These are comfort preferences, not universal accuracy settings; disable or schedule them if color matching matters for your work.

For easier reading, use Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size to adjust text size, bold text, contrast, transparency, or color filters. Changes in Accessibility can affect every app, so test them in the apps you use most.
Check battery information and charging behavior
Open Settings > Battery to see recent usage by app and identify unexpected drain. An app that repeatedly runs in the background may need its notifications, location access, or background activity reviewed in its own settings. Battery usage immediately after setup can be temporarily high while the iPad indexes files, restores content, or downloads updates.
Where available, inspect Battery Health and charging options such as Optimized Battery Charging. These controls vary by model and software. Avoid changing a health-related option simply to reach a particular percentage; use the information to decide whether an app or usage pattern needs attention.
Make typing and language settings fit your work
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard. Add the languages and keyboard layouts you actually use, and remove layouts that cause accidental switching. Review Auto-Correction, Predictive text, Check Spelling, and the shortcut settings according to whether you prioritize speed or exact wording.

- Physical and motor: Touch accommodations, AssistiveTouch, pointer settings, switch control, and Face ID attention options where supported.
- Hearing: Subtitles, captions, audio adjustments, and sound recognition.
- Guided Access: Restrict the iPad to one app for a child, kiosk, examination, or focused task.
These features can be enabled, tested, and turned off later. If someone else uses the iPad, configure the features for that person’s account and explain how to invoke or exit them before relying on the device in a time-sensitive situation.
Review app-specific controls after installation
After installing your essential apps, revisit Settings and scroll to an app’s section, or use Settings search for its name. App-specific pages may include cellular data, default browser or email behavior, Siri access, background app refresh, file permissions, and in-app notification options.

Do not grant every permission during an app’s first launch just to dismiss prompts. Allow what the app needs for a feature you intend to use, then return to Privacy & Security if a function does not work. An app can request permission again later, and you can revoke access without uninstalling it.
A practical order for completing the checklist
- Secure access: Set a passcode, add Face ID or Touch ID if supported, and decide whether the ten-failed-attempt erase option suits your backup habits.
- Enable recovery: Turn on Find My iPad and verify the Apple Account, trusted contact details, and recovery methods.
- Choose cloud data: Select the iCloud services that should sync and check storage before enabling large libraries.
- Evaluate Advanced Data Protection: Set up a recovery contact or key first if you decide the added protection is appropriate.
- Audit privacy: Review location, photos, camera, microphone, contacts, Bluetooth, and local-network permissions as apps request them.
- Reduce exposure: Set Auto-Lock and notification previews for the places where the iPad is used.
- Tune daily use: Configure Focus, display, battery, keyboard, accessibility, and app-specific options only where they solve a real problem.
When a setting or menu is missing
Feature availability depends on the iPad model, iPadOS release, region, and whether the device is managed by a school or employer. A supervised iPad may restrict account, privacy, or app settings. First use the Settings search field with the exact feature name, then check whether a parent, administrator, or Screen Time restriction is preventing changes. Menu paths in Apple documentation can also differ from the labels shown on another iPadOS release.
If a change has an unwanted effect, return to the same page and reverse it rather than resetting the entire iPad. Keep a current iCloud or computer backup before enabling destructive options such as Erase Data or before making major account changes.
