Start with the settings that affect privacy, screen comfort and interruptions: review tracking and app permissions, choose a comfortable display and Auto-Lock interval, then decide which notifications you want to see. Consider Low Power Mode when conserving charge matters, and change multitasking or accessibility options only if they fit how you use the iPad. These are personal adjustments, not required performance fixes; available choices can differ by iPad Air model, region and iPadOS version.
What should you change first on a new iPad Air?
There is no universal setup checklist. A sensible first pass is to review privacy, make the display comfortable, and decide how long the screen should remain on. Next, tailor notifications and Focus to the interruptions you want to allow. Battery and multitasking settings are worth exploring when a particular situation or workflow calls for them; accessibility options are available to customize the iPad to your needs.
Work through one area at a time and keep the default when it already suits you. A setting that reduces one inconvenience can introduce another: a longer screen-on interval can use more power, while limiting alerts can make some notifications less visible. The goal is to choose deliberately, not to change every switch. Apple’s iPad User Guide covers settings across multiple iPad Air generations and screen sizes, so the exact options on your device may not match every instruction or illustration.
A practical order is to start with privacy, since that is where you can decide which app requests and permissions you are comfortable with. Then set up the screen for the places you use it and the amount of time you want it to stay awake. Notifications and Focus are next because they affect what gets your attention. Finally, consider battery conservation, multitasking and accessibility according to your own needs. You can stop at any point; there is no benefit in changing a setting just because it exists.

How do I stop apps from tracking me on iPad?
To stop apps from asking for permission to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apple documents this control in Make your iPad your own.
This is a choice about cross-company tracking requests. Turning the setting off denies apps’ requests to track in that way; it is not a general switch that removes every kind of data collection or permission from every app. If you want to check access to other information, review the app permissions and privacy controls available under Settings > Privacy & Security. Consider each permission in the context of the app and what you use it for, rather than assuming every app needs the same access.
For example, when reviewing a permission, ask whether it is relevant to the function you actually use in that app. You can decide app by app instead of treating one choice as right for every app. Privacy and convenience can pull in different directions: restricting access may be the preference for one person or use case, while another owner may choose to allow a permission that supports a feature they rely on. The settings are there to let you make that choice.

If you do not see a described control, check the current menu on your iPad and its installed iPadOS version rather than assuming the device is missing a required setup step.
How should I set display comfort and Auto-Lock?
Adjust brightness and color to suit the room and your preference. The controls are under Settings > Display & Brightness; Apple’s guide, Adjust the screen brightness and color on iPad, explains the display options. There is no single brightness or color choice that is right for everyone, so use a setting that is comfortable in the places where you usually use the iPad.
It can help to judge the display where you tend to use it rather than relying on a setting chosen in a different room. If the screen feels too bright or its color does not suit you, make a small adjustment and see how it feels during your usual reading or app use. You do not need to apply a particular color setting simply because it is available; comfort and preference are the useful tests.
Choose a screen-off interval that fits your use
Auto-Lock determines how long the display stays on before it locks automatically. Find it at Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose an available interval. Apple’s Keep the iPad display on longer instructions cover this setting and its trade-off: “Delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption.”

A longer interval can be convenient when you need time to read or refer to something without touching the screen. A shorter interval may better fit situations where the iPad is left unattended or you want the display to turn off sooner. Choose the shortest interval that does not regularly interrupt what you are doing; you can revisit it if your routine changes.

Think of this as a trade-off between screen-on convenience and power use, not a setting with one best value. If the display is locking before you can finish a task, try a longer available interval. If you often leave the iPad sitting idle, a shorter interval may suit you better. Apple cautions that delaying or preventing automatic locking may increase power consumption, so consider whether the convenience is worth it for your use.
Before extending Auto-Lock for a particular activity, check whether the app already keeps the screen awake while in use. Active reading, video and navigation apps may prevent automatic locking during use, so changing the global timer may be unnecessary. If the screen still turns off when you need it, adjust Auto-Lock and see whether the available intervals solve that specific problem.
How do I keep my iPad screen from turning off? For the general timer, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose an available interval that keeps the display on long enough for your task. If you only notice the issue in a reading, video or navigation app, first check whether that app keeps the screen awake while it is active. You may not need to change the iPad-wide timer.
How can I reduce unwanted notifications without missing important ones?
Review notifications app by app, then decide whether a Focus mode would help in a particular context, such as work or sleep. Apple’s Change notification settings on iPad guide covers notification controls, while the iPad User Guide also covers Focus.
Start by identifying the alerts you actually want to see. An app that rarely needs your attention may not need to send notifications; another may be useful to keep visible. This is a personal trade-off between fewer interruptions and notification visibility, not a guaranteed productivity improvement. Avoid disabling alerts indiscriminately if you rely on them.
Focus modes let you tailor which alerts appear in different contexts. You might want one arrangement while working and another at bedtime, but the right setup depends on which notifications matter to you at those times. If you are unsure, make a modest change, use it in the relevant context, and adjust it if an important alert is hidden or an unwanted one still appears.
A useful way to review this area is to think about alerts in two groups: those you need to notice in a given context and those you would rather not see then. You can adjust app notifications and Focus with that distinction in mind, rather than trying to silence everything. If an alert matters only at certain times, a context-specific Focus arrangement may fit better than changing your notification preferences across the board. Revisit the choice if it hides something you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen should I turn on Low Power Mode?
Use Low Power Mode when you want to conserve battery, rather than treating it as a required default setting. Apple documents it as a built-in iPad battery feature in Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on iPad. The available guidance does not establish a battery-life figure that applies to every iPad Air, so do not rely on a specific number of extra hours.

It is an option to consider when conserving charge is more important to you than keeping your usual settings unchanged. If battery conservation is not a current concern, there is no need to enable it as part of a mandatory first-run checklist. Apple’s iPad User Guide includes other battery settings as well, but the menu and availability can depend on the model and software version.
In other words, Low Power Mode is a situational choice, not a hidden performance fix or a requirement for a new iPad Air. Turn to it when saving power is your priority; otherwise, there is no need to change it just to complete setup. Because no single battery-life result applies to every owner and use pattern, treat it as an available conservation option rather than expecting a guaranteed number of extra hours.
How do I use multiple windows on iPad?
If you prefer one app at a time, you do not need to change multitasking settings. If you want to work with multiple app windows, Apple’s instructions for Windowed Apps apply to iPadOS 26 or later: go to Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and enable the option if it is available. Apple’s Multitask on iPad support page, dated September 16, 2026, describes opening, switching, resizing and moving windows, including side-by-side use.

Multitasking choices are version-dependent. Check the iPadOS version installed on your Air and the menu options shown on the device before following instructions for Windowed Apps. If you do not see that control, the cited instructions may not apply to your software version or device configuration. Do not assume that every iPad Air generation offers the same multitasking choices.
Try windowed work only if it solves a real task for you, such as keeping two apps visible together. More visible windows can be useful for that workflow; for simpler use, staying with a single app can be easier to manage. The best choice is the one that makes your actual tasks clearer, not the one with the most on-screen options.
How do I use multiple windows on iPad? If your iPad is running iPadOS 26 or later and Windowed Apps is available, enable it under Settings > Multitasking & Gestures. Apple’s multitasking instructions describe opening and switching among windows, as well as resizing and moving them, including placing windows side by side. Check your own version and available menu choices because these instructions are version-dependent.
Use the side-by-side option when seeing two apps together helps with a task; otherwise, there is no need to change away from single-app use. The comparison is about your workflow, not about one mode being universally better. If managing several visible windows makes a task harder to follow, return to the simpler approach that suits you.

Accessibility settings are not a special configuration that everyone must enable. They are a collection of options for vision, mobility, hearing, speech and cognitive needs. Text size and related display controls are reasonable places to start if the default presentation does not feel comfortable. Make adjustments based on what you can read and use easily; there is no single recommended text size for all readers. If a change makes an app or screen harder to use, return to the control and try a different setting. The point is to tailor access to your needs, not to apply a standard configuration.
You can think of accessibility as a set of optional ways to adapt the device, not a checklist with a universal starting point. Explore the relevant controls when a particular aspect of reading, hearing or interacting with the iPad would be easier with a change. Keep settings that help you and adjust or undo the ones that do not. What works for one person may not be the right choice for someone else.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I decide whether a setting is worth changing?
Use the problem you want to solve as the test. If you are concerned about cross-company tracking, review Tracking. If the display is uncomfortable, adjust brightness or color. If the screen locks at an inconvenient moment, consider Auto-Lock after checking whether the app keeps it awake. If alerts distract you, tailor notifications or Focus. If you want to conserve charge, consider Low Power Mode; if you need several apps visible together, check whether your device and software offer the multitasking mode you want.
Keep changes that address a real need and undo those that cause a new inconvenience. No one setting is best for every owner: privacy controls can affect app convenience, screen-on time trades convenience against power use, fewer alerts can mean less notification visibility, and windowed multitasking suits some workflows better than single-app use.
For instructions, use Apple’s current guide that matches the control and check the version and options on your own iPad Air. Settings availability can differ by model, region and iPadOS version. You do not need accessories or paid software to make these built-in adjustments.
A low-risk approach is to make one change, use the iPad as usual, and then decide whether it solved the problem. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped and which introduced a drawback. If the result is not useful, return to the prior choice and try another available option. Defaults are perfectly reasonable when they already match your habits.

Will a longer Auto-Lock interval drain my iPad Air battery?
Apple cautions that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption. A longer interval may be convenient, but it can keep the screen on longer. Also consider that active reading, video and navigation apps may already prevent automatic locking while in use.
Do all iPad Air models have Windowed Apps?
Apple’s cited Windowed Apps instructions apply to iPadOS 26 or later, and the available options can depend on the device and software. Check the iPadOS version and the menu shown on your iPad Air; do not assume every generation has the same multitasking choices.
