For one Windows or Mac computer with a very large disk, Backblaze Computer Backup is the clearest IDrive alternative to investigate first. It is positioned around unlimited computer backup, while IDrive covers a broader mix of computers, phones, NAS devices and SaaS data. If you need several devices, NAS protection, business servers, or cloud-application backup in one account, no candidate in this comparison is a confirmed like-for-like replacement.

pCloud and Carbonite Safe fit narrower use cases, and Microsoft OneDrive is better understood as file storage and synchronization than full-machine backup. The right choice depends on the devices and data you must restore, retention requirements, privacy controls and the actual plan available in your country—not the largest storage number in an advertisement.

Best IDrive alternatives at a glance

IDrive’s appeal is breadth: its product scope includes computer, phone, NAS and SaaS data protection. An alternative can be better for a specific workload while being less capable overall. Use this table as a screening tool, then verify the current plan documentation before paying.

Service Best fit Storage model Restore and retention notes Important limits to verify
Backblaze Computer Backup One person who mainly needs automatic backup for one computer Marketed as unlimited computer backup; TechRadar Pro reported a starting figure of $9 per month for workstation backup in 2026 Backblaze’s pricing information describes web restores, mailed hard-drive restores, optional private-key encryption and optional forever version retention; web restores are limited to 500GB per request Current price, operating-system eligibility, external-drive rules, version-retention period and restore fees or conditions
pCloud Users who want cloud-storage access, sharing and an online-backup feature in the same service Account storage plans; Cloudwards lists it among services with online backup Backup scope, deleted-file handling and version controls need plan-level confirmation Whether it protects the complete device or only selected locations, supported drives and recovery workflow
Carbonite Safe People seeking a simple backup product and considering an unlimited plan Cloudwards reports an unlimited plan, but “unlimited” is plan-specific Confirm how long versions and deleted files remain available and how a large restore is delivered Device count, exclusions, external-drive support, operating-system coverage and renewal price
Microsoft OneDrive File and photo protection integrated with Windows and Microsoft 365 Cloud-storage quotas rather than an unlimited full-computer-backup model Useful for synchronized files and photos; TechRadar characterizes it as lacking drive imaging and disaster recovery It is not a like-for-like choice when you need bare-metal or whole-machine recovery
Internxt, Proton Drive and CrashPlan Services worth researching for specialized privacy, collaboration or business requirements Not established consistently across the available material Detailed plan-specific evidence is insufficient here for a recommendation Confirm every feature, price, retention rule and supported data source directly

What an IDrive replacement must actually replace

Before comparing logos, write down the recovery job. IDrive can be used across several data sources, so replacing it may mean replacing one function or all of them.

One computer with a large internal disk

If your priority is continuous protection of one Windows or Mac computer and you do not need a unified phone, NAS and SaaS console, an unlimited-per-computer model can be more straightforward than a capped account. Backblaze is the leading candidate to investigate for this narrow case. “Unlimited” still requires checking which files, operating-system locations and attached drives are eligible.

Several household computers and mobile devices

A family may value one account, predictable device support and a simple restore process more than an unlimited allowance for one machine. Neither pCloud nor Carbonite’s broad labels alone establish that they reproduce IDrive’s multi-device and mobile coverage. Confirm the number and type of devices included before switching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NAS, servers or cloud applications

NAS shares, business servers and SaaS accounts require connectors and policies that consumer computer-backup products may not provide. IDrive’s stated scope includes these sources; a replacement that only watches one desktop is not equivalent. Backblaze B2 is a separate business-storage option that TechRadar Pro reported at $6 per TB per month in 2026, but that figure is a dated editorial price and B2 is not the same product as automatic consumer computer backup. Evaluate server agents, object-storage compatibility, access controls and restore procedures separately.

Backblaze: the strongest single-computer candidate

Backblaze Computer Backup is the most plausible first check when your requirement is “protect this one computer without buying a fixed storage quota.” Cloudwards describes it as an unlimited-storage alternative, and TechRadar Pro reported a $9-per-month starting price for workstation backup in 2026. Treat that number as a dated guide figure: check the current checkout price, billing term and renewal rate in your region.

Restore options

Backblaze’s own pricing information describes web restores of up to 500GB per request and a mailed hard-drive restore option. A web download is convenient for a small recovery; a shipped drive can be more practical after a disk failure involving hundreds of gigabytes. Ask whether shipping, deposits, return requirements or regional availability apply before relying on the mailed option.

Retention and encryption

The service documentation describes optional private-key encryption and an optional forever version-retention feature for an added fee. A private key can improve confidentiality, but losing it can make recovery impossible; store it in a separate, secure location and test the recovery process. “Forever” retention is an add-on, not a default assumption, so identify the standard version and deleted-file retention window in the plan you select.

External-drive questions

Do not assume that every external disk is covered simply because computer backup is unlimited. Backblaze’s eligibility rules for attached or removable drives, required reconnection intervals and operating-system editions should be checked at sign-up. A backup that silently omits your photo or project drive is not a successful backup.

pCloud: storage access plus an online-backup feature

Cloudwards includes pCloud among services with online backup. It may appeal when you want a drive-like cloud interface, sharing and remote access alongside backup. That convenience does not prove full-device protection.

Questions to answer before choosing it

  • Does the backup feature include the entire computer, or only selected folders and supported locations?
  • Can it back up external volumes, network shares, phones or NAS devices you rely on?
  • How are prior versions, deleted files and ransomware-damaged files retained?
  • Can you restore a large dataset in one operation, and is there an offline or shipped-media option?
  • Which encryption mode applies to backups, and who controls the keys?

Choose pCloud when its storage and sharing workflow is valuable and the documented backup scope matches your files. Do not describe it as an IDrive equivalent until those answers are confirmed for your plan and operating system.

Carbonite Safe: simple backup, but check the “unlimited” details

Cloudwards presents Carbonite Safe as a simple alternative and reports an unlimited plan. That label is plan-specific rather than a guarantee that every device, drive and file type is covered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify exclusions and device count

Read the plan’s exclusion list. Backup products commonly treat operating-system files, applications, temporary data, very large files or removable media differently. Confirm whether one subscription protects one computer or several, and whether an external drive consumes a separate entitlement.

Verify recovery before subscribing

Find the exact version-history and deleted-file retention periods, then identify the restore methods available in your country. A simple interface is useful only if it can recover an accidentally deleted file and rebuild a failed computer within your acceptable time.

Why OneDrive is not a full IDrive substitute

TechRadar characterizes OneDrive as cloud storage with Windows and Microsoft 365 integration rather than a complete backup system. Synchronizing a folder protects the files that are in that folder, but it does not automatically create a restorable image of the operating system, applications, settings and every user location.

OneDrive can be appropriate for documents, photos and collaborative files when those are the only assets you need to recover. Selective sync, account compromise or an unwanted deletion can also propagate changes, so maintain version history and a separate backup. If your recovery requirement is “replace a failed drive and resume with the previous machine,” choose a service that explicitly supports whole-device recovery.

Backup versus sync: the distinction that prevents expensive mistakes

Cloud storage and synchronization answer “How do I access these files on another device?” Backup answers “How do I recover an earlier or deleted state after loss, corruption or hardware failure?” Some products provide both, but the features are not interchangeable.

Signs of a real computer-backup workflow

  • A defined list of protected disks, folders and operating systems.
  • Scheduled or continuous versioned copies stored separately from the source computer.
  • Controls for deleted-file retention and historical versions.
  • A documented restore path for individual files and large-scale recovery.
  • Clear treatment of external disks, network locations and application data.

Signs you are looking at synchronization only

  • Only a designated folder is uploaded.
  • Deleting or encrypting a local file immediately propagates to the cloud.
  • No bare-metal, system-state or complete-machine recovery option is documented.
  • Storage quotas are presented without retention or restore details.

How to choose by workload

Choose Backblaze first when

  • One computer is the main asset.
  • The disk is large enough that a capped quota would be inconvenient.
  • You can accept a product focused on computer backup rather than a broad phone, NAS and SaaS portfolio.
  • You have checked external-drive eligibility and the retention tier you need.

Investigate pCloud when

  • Cloud-drive access and sharing are as important as backup.
  • The documented online-backup scope covers your actual folders and devices.
  • You are willing to validate versioning and recovery rather than infer them from the storage interface.

Investigate Carbonite Safe when

  • You want a simple backup experience and its plan’s device and file rules fit.
  • The reported unlimited allowance applies to your required computer count and drives.
  • The retention and restore method meet your recovery-time expectations.

Keep OneDrive as a companion when

  • Your primary requirement is access to documents and photos across Windows and Microsoft 365.
  • You already have a separate full-computer backup.

Retain IDrive or seek a business-focused replacement when

  • You need one policy covering computers, phones, NAS, servers and SaaS data.
  • Administrative controls, multiple user identities or centralized business recovery are mandatory.
  • A narrow consumer backup service would leave important data sources uncovered.

Restore and retention: compare the recovery, not the upload

Upload speed and headline capacity matter less than what happens on the worst day. Compare each candidate on these recovery tests:

  1. Single-file recovery: restore an earlier version of a document and confirm its original path and metadata.
  2. Deleted-file recovery: determine how long a deliberately deleted file remains recoverable.
  3. Bulk recovery: check download limits, queue times, archive formats and whether a shipped drive is available.
  4. Computer replacement: determine whether the service restores an operating system and applications or only user files.
  5. Credential loss: document account-recovery steps and, if using a private key, the exact key-management responsibility.

Backblaze’s stated 500GB web-restore limit illustrates why restore logistics belong in the comparison. A limit may be perfectly adequate for a folder and inadequate after a complete disk failure.

Privacy, security and administration

Look for multifactor authentication, encryption in transit and at rest, optional client-side or private-key encryption, administrator roles and audit information. A private key can prevent the provider from decrypting your data, but it also removes a safety net if the key is lost. Business users should additionally verify user off-boarding, centralized policy enforcement and whether one administrator can restore another user’s data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No encryption feature compensates for an untested restore. Perform a small restore after setup, record the steps and repeat the test after major operating-system or plan changes.

Use the 3-2-1 rule with an external drive

TechRadar’s backup guidance describes the 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies on at least two different storage media, with at least one copy off-site. A practical arrangement is the working computer, a local external drive and a cloud backup. The external drive provides fast local recovery; the cloud copy covers theft, fire or a local disaster.

Choose the external drive based on capacity, interface, portability, encryption requirements and compatibility with your backup software. Do not treat an unplugged drive as automatically current: schedule updates, verify them and store the drive away from the computer when practical. A local drive alone is not an off-site copy.

Setup checklist for any replacement

  1. Inventory data sources. List computers, internal and external disks, phones, NAS shares, servers and SaaS accounts.
  2. Set a recovery target. Decide how much data loss in time you can tolerate and how quickly a failed computer must be operational.
  3. Read the plan rules. Confirm device count, file exclusions, external-drive support, retention, billing term, renewal price and regional availability.
  4. Enable account security. Turn on multifactor authentication and store recovery codes securely.
  5. Configure protection. Select every required disk and folder; do not rely on a default folder list until you have compared it with your inventory.
  6. Protect encryption keys. If private-key encryption is enabled, keep a separate encrypted copy of the key and document who can access it.
  7. Run the first backup. Leave the computer online long enough for the initial upload, and check that the service reports the expected file count and size.
  8. Test restores. Recover a recent file, an older version and a deleted file. Record the result.
  9. Add the local copy. Configure an external-drive backup and verify that it is stored separately from the computer.
  10. Review quarterly. Recheck new folders, connected drives, retention settings, subscription renewal and restore performance.

Common failure modes and fixes

The backup is “complete,” but a drive is missing

Review the provider’s included-volume rules, reconnect requirements and exclusion list. Add the drive explicitly and wait for a fresh scan. If the plan excludes it, use a separate local backup and a service that supports that volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Files were synchronized but not recoverable as versions

Confirm whether you configured sync or backup. Enable versioned backup for the source, and keep an independent copy so a propagated deletion or ransomware encryption does not become the only cloud state.

A restore is too slow

For a few files, use web restore. For hundreds of gigabytes, compare the provider’s bulk-download limits and mailed-media option before an emergency. Maintain a current local external-drive copy for rapid recovery.

The subscription became more expensive

Compare the original billing term with the renewal term and distinguish introductory pricing from the recurring rate. Recalculate cost per protected device and per recoverable terabyte rather than comparing a promotional headline.

The account cannot decrypt old data

If private-key encryption is enabled, locate the stored key and test it during a planned restore. Keep the key outside the backed-up computer and restrict access to authorized people.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret the 2026 price evidence

The figures available for this comparison are not a stable market price list. TechRadar Pro reported $9 per month as a starting workstation-backup price and $6 per TB per month for Backblaze B2 business backup in 2026. Backblaze’s own page describes monthly, one-year and two-year billing, a 500GB web-restore limit, mailed-drive restores and optional retention and encryption features. Your checkout may differ by country, currency, tax, promotion, plan and renewal stage.

For every finalist, capture the price basis in writing: monthly or annual billing, introductory or renewal rate, per-device or per-account charging, included storage, add-ons and restore costs. Recheck these details immediately before purchase.

Bottom line

There is no universal “best” IDrive alternative. Start with Backblaze Computer Backup for one computer where unlimited-style coverage is the priority, but verify current eligibility, external-drive treatment and retention. Consider pCloud when cloud-drive access and sharing are central, and Carbonite Safe when its simple, plan-specific coverage matches your devices. Use OneDrive for synchronized files and photos, not as a replacement for whole-machine disaster recovery. If your requirement spans phones, NAS, servers and SaaS data, keep a broad multi-source design—or choose a business product that documents those connectors—instead of assuming a consumer computer-backup plan is equivalent.
