After a HyperOS installation, review three updater controls: automatic installation, automatic downloads, and downloading over mobile data. Open Settings > About phone or About tablet > Xiaomi HyperOS > the three-dot menu, then choose Update settings when that item is available. Keep downloads on Wi-Fi, decide whether unattended installation suits you, and check battery, storage, and network conditions before the next update. Exact labels and switches vary by device, region, and HyperOS version.
Find the HyperOS update settings
The controls are inside the updater rather than in the ordinary app-update area. On Xiaomi phones and tablets, start at Settings > About phone/tablet > Xiaomi HyperOS. Tap the three-dot menu; select Update settings if your build displays it.
Do not assume that every Xiaomi model shows the same page. Xiaomi’s general instructions use “About phone/tablet,” while a particular device may place the same entry under a slightly different heading. A missing switch can therefore reflect the model, software build, or rollout region rather than a fault with your device.

Automatic installation: choose control or convenience
Leave it off when timing matters
Automatic installation is optional. Leaving it disabled gives you a chance to read the update information, postpone a restart, and install when the phone or tablet will not be needed. This is the sensible setting if you use the device for work, navigation, an alarm, a long download, or another task that an unattended restart could interrupt.

With automatic installation off, the updater may still notify you about an available package or download it according to your separate download preference. Turning off installation is not the same as blocking every update-related download.
Turn it on when unattended maintenance is preferable
Enable automatic installation if you would rather have the device apply eligible updates without waiting for a manual confirmation. Xiaomi says some supported devices can update at night when they are not in use. That behavior is device-dependent, so do not treat it as a promise that every HyperOS device will install overnight or at a particular hour.
Before enabling the switch, make sure the device can remain powered and connected when an update is likely to run. If you cannot tolerate an unexpected restart, keep the switch off even if automatic updating would be more convenient.

Automatic downloads: separate the package from the installation
Some HyperOS builds expose automatic downloading as a control separate from automatic installation. The distinction matters: downloading obtains the update package, while installation applies it and may restart the device.
Use automatic downloads for a ready-to-install device
Allow automatic downloads when you want an update package prepared in the background so that installation can happen later at a time you choose. A Xiaomi tablet FAQ describes automatic downloads while connected to Wi-Fi. That is a model-specific description, not evidence that every device uses exactly the same trigger or schedule.

Downloading in advance can reduce the waiting time when you manually approve an update, but it also uses storage before you decide to install. If free space is tight or you prefer to inspect every release before any package is stored, disable this option where your device provides it.
Disable it when you want every download to be deliberate
Turn automatic downloads off if you want to control when large update files arrive, preserve limited storage, or avoid network activity while the device is unattended. You can then open the updater yourself, review the available update, and start the download on a suitable Wi-Fi connection.
Download using mobile data: normally keep it disabled
The mobile-data download switch determines whether the updater may use a cellular connection instead of waiting for Wi-Fi. Xiaomi warns that update files are large and advises checking both your data allowance and available storage. For most readers, leaving this control off is the safer default.
When Wi-Fi-only downloading is the better choice
- Your mobile plan has a cap, throttling threshold, or overage charge.
- You share data through a hotspot and need to reserve the allowance for other devices.
- You want to know exactly when a large package is transferred.
- You are traveling and cannot predict roaming costs or network limits.
When enabling cellular downloads can be reasonable
Enable mobile-data downloads only when you deliberately accept cellular usage, have verified the allowance, and need the package before reliable Wi-Fi is available. Confirm that the switch controls downloading rather than installation; the labels are not identical on every build. Even with cellular downloading allowed, installation remains a separate decision when the device exposes separate controls.
Prepare the device before installing an update
Use a stable Wi-Fi connection
Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 15 Ultra support FAQ specifically says to ensure the phone is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. Treat that as device-specific support guidance, but it is a prudent practice for other HyperOS devices as well: a stable connection reduces the chance that a package download will fail or need to restart.

Check battery before you start
The same Xiaomi 15 Ultra FAQ advises at least 50% battery. That figure is guidance for that FAQ, not a universal requirement established for every HyperOS model. Follow your own device’s on-screen requirement if it gives one; otherwise, charge well above the minimum shown before beginning so the installation is not interrupted.
Confirm free storage
Keep enough free space for the downloaded package and the installation process. Xiaomi’s support guidance tells users to check available storage because update files can be large. The exact amount required varies by update and device, so do not rely on a single universal number. If space is low, remove or move files you no longer need, then check the updater again.
Do not interrupt installation
Once installation has started, avoid powering the device off, forcing a restart, or repeatedly changing network conditions. Allow the process to finish and keep the device connected to power when practical. If you only downloaded the package, you can still postpone installation; the instruction not to interrupt applies to the installation phase itself.
Recommended configurations by priority

These are preference profiles, not Xiaomi requirements. Your device may omit one or more of the switches, and the visible labels can change with the HyperOS version.
Change the settings step by step
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone or About tablet.
- Tap Xiaomi HyperOS to open the system updater.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Update settings, if it appears.
- Review Automatic installation. Turn it on for unattended installation, or leave it off to approve installation yourself.
- Review Automatic downloads, if shown. Decide whether packages may be obtained in the background, normally over Wi-Fi.
- Review Download using mobile data. Leave it off unless you have intentionally checked your cellular allowance and accept the cost or quota impact.
- Return to the updater and check whether a pending update is waiting. If you choose to install it now, connect to stable Wi-Fi, charge the device, verify free storage, and let installation complete without interruption.
What to check after changing a setting
Verify the switch stayed changed
Leave the updater, reopen it, and confirm that the selected option still shows your choice. This catches a change that was not saved or a menu that returned to its default after a system transition.

Check whether downloading and installing are still separate
If you enabled automatic downloads but disabled automatic installation, look for a downloaded package that is waiting for approval. The presence of a package does not by itself mean that the update has been installed.
Check storage and network use
After an automatic download, review available storage and your Wi-Fi or cellular usage. If the package arrived over cellular data unexpectedly, revisit the mobile-data switch and leave it disabled unless you have a deliberate reason to use it.

The “Update settings” entry is absent
Menu availability is not identical across HyperOS devices. Reopen the HyperOS updater from the About phone/tablet page and inspect the three-dot menu. If the entry is still absent, your model or software build may not expose that control. Do not infer that another model’s instructions apply unchanged to yours.
No update is offered
Update eligibility depends on the device and region. Xiaomi notes that older models may stop receiving updates, and availability is not identical for all devices. Check Xiaomi’s official support channel for your exact model and region rather than repeatedly changing updater switches in the hope of forcing a release.
The download fails or will not begin
- Reconnect to a stable Wi-Fi network.
- Check that adequate storage is free.
- Check the battery level and connect the charger if needed.
- Review whether mobile-data downloading is disabled while you are away from Wi-Fi.
- Return to the updater later if the update is being staged for your model or region.
These checks address the conditions Xiaomi identifies in its support guidance; they do not change the device’s eligibility for an update that has not been released to it.

Choose settings for common situations
You need the phone available all day
Keep automatic installation off and schedule the update for a period when a restart will not disrupt calls, navigation, alarms, or work. Automatic downloads can remain on if you have enough storage and want the package ready over Wi-Fi.
You rarely inspect updates
Automatic installation can be enabled for convenience, while mobile-data downloading remains off to protect the cellular allowance. If your device supports nighttime installation, it may use that period when the device is not in use, but the exact behavior is model-dependent.
You have limited storage
Disable automatic downloads where possible and start downloads manually after checking the available space. This prevents a large package from occupying storage before you have decided to install it.

Keep mobile-data downloading off unless you have checked the plan and intentionally accept the usage. If you do enable it, monitor the allowance and avoid beginning installation until the device has sufficient battery and storage.
