Ubuntu players have 28 horror games to choose from across stealth, psychological, action, short-session and co-op horror. In the roundup’s compatibility labels, eight have native Linux versions and the other 20 use Proton through Steam Play. Those are the roundup’s reported classifications, not independent tests; check the current Steam listing and ProtonDB reports for a specific game before buying.
The best way to narrow the list is to decide how you want to be scared, then check whether the game’s Linux route and hardware demands fit your setup. Prices below are approximate amounts reported by the roundup, not guaranteed current prices. Store prices, editions, requirements and cloud catalogs can change by region and over time.
Which Ubuntu horror game should you choose?
Start with the experience you want, rather than the largest or newest title. Pursuit and helplessness suit players who want sustained pressure; narrative games suit those who prefer atmosphere and ideas; combat horror offers more ways to fight back. Shorter games can fit an evening, while co-op changes the mood by making scares a group experience.

Which games are most frightening?
For immediate pressure and helplessness
Alien: Isolation and Outlast are the roundup’s lead choices for tense pursuit and hiding, with Amnesia: The Bunker as another survival-horror option. Alien: Isolation and Outlast are listed as native Linux games; Amnesia: The Bunker is listed for Proton. Choose this group if being chased and having limited control is more appealing than fighting through enemies.
For unease that builds through the story
SOMA, SILENT HILL 2, SIGNALIS and Mouthwashing lean toward psychological or narrative horror in the roundup’s groupings. SOMA is listed as native Linux; the other three are listed for Proton. This is a better fit if atmosphere and story matter more to you than constant jump scares.
Rank #2

For players who want to fight back
Resident Evil Requiem, Resident Evil 2, Dead Space, The Evil Within 2 and Cronos: The New Dawn are the roundup’s combat- and resource-management-oriented suggestions. Cronos: The New Dawn is listed as native Linux, while the others are listed for Proton. Combat does not necessarily make horror gentle, but it gives you a different response to danger than hiding or fleeing.
Which games fit a shorter session or a gentler introduction?
For a shorter session
The roundup groups Iron Lung, Buckshot Roulette, Crow Country, Still Wakes the Deep and Hollowbody as shorter-session options. Buckshot Roulette is listed as native Linux; the others are listed for Proton. “Shorter” is a relative category here, not a guaranteed completion time.
Rank #3

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For lower-intensity horror
Inscryption, CARRION and Little Nightmares II are the roundup’s suggested lower-intensity entry points. Inscryption and CARRION are listed as native Linux titles; Little Nightmares II is listed for Proton. The roundup also points to modes in Crow Country and SOMA that reduce or remove threats. Check the game’s current edition and settings for the modes available to you.
Which picks can you play with friends?
The roundup lists The Outlast Trials, DEVOUR and Murky Divers as co-op horror options. All three are categorized there as Proton games. Group play often changes horror’s tone: coordinating, reacting together and laughing at a scare can make a session feel less solitary, though it does not guarantee a less frightening game.

Which games are native Linux, and which use Proton?
The roundup identifies eight native Linux titles: Alien: Isolation, Outlast, SOMA, Darkwood, Cronos: The New Dawn, Buckshot Roulette, Inscryption and CARRION. It classifies the other 20 games in the table as Windows games played through Proton.
Canonical describes Proton as Valve software that lets Windows games run on Linux through Steam Play. A native Linux version runs without Proton. Proton compatibility is not a blanket guarantee: Canonical warns that unsupported titles vary greatly in functionality and recommends checking reports for the specific game on ProtonDB.
How to enable Proton in Steam on Ubuntu
- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play.
- To make Proton available for non-native games generally, enable Steam Play for all other titles. Follow any restart prompt Steam shows.
- To set a compatibility tool for just one game, open its Library entry, choose Properties > Compatibility, and select the desired tool if available.
- Before purchase or troubleshooting, check the title’s ProtonDB reports. A game may launch but still have problems with graphics, controls, performance or online features.
These menu paths and the compatibility caveat follow Canonical’s Configure Proton/Steam Play documentation, last updated April 29, 2026.

There is no single hardware answer for this list: it spans games released from 2013 through 2026, and the roundup does not supply a uniform set of PC requirements or performance tests. Check the current requirements for the specific game and compare them with your CPU, GPU, memory and available storage. Proton compatibility and performance can also vary by title and system configuration.
The roundup marks many games as cloud-playable and suggests streaming as an alternative when local hardware is older or cannot run a demanding game. Its cloud flags do not establish present catalog availability or regional access, so confirm both with the service before relying on streaming.
