For older adults choosing a home security system, the best fit depends on whether the priority is professional installation, a do-it-yourself setup, caregiver notifications, or protection from hazards such as smoke and water leaks. ADT, SimpliSafe, Vivint, Cove, and Frontpoint are named in a senior-focused comparison; Ring Alarm is a broader alternative, not a sixth system evaluated on equal senior-specific terms.
Most importantly, a home alarm is not automatically a medical-alert service. A siren, security-system panic button, or app does not by itself provide wearable fall detection or mobile emergency coverage. If someone needs to summon help after a fall or while away from home, assess a separate medical-alert device and response service.
How to choose a security system for an older adult
Start with the actual safety need, then choose the simplest system that meets it. A security alarm is designed to detect events such as a door opening or motion and can notify a monitoring service or household members, depending on its setup. Medical-alert devices are designed to let a person call for help using a wearable button or pendant; some options add fall detection or mobile coverage.
Identify who will install and manage it
- Professional installation: Useful when the resident would rather not mount sensors, configure an app, or troubleshoot equipment. Confirm the installation charge and what the installer will set up.
- DIY installation: Can offer more control over setup and placement, but someone must be comfortable following instructions, testing devices, and maintaining the system.
- Caregiver involvement: Shared alerts or remote app access may help a caregiver stay informed. Agree on which alerts they will receive and who can view cameras before enabling access.
List the hazards the system should cover
Intrusion sensors address a different risk from smoke, carbon monoxide, extreme temperature, or water leaks. Ask whether the chosen system supports the environmental sensors relevant to the home; their availability depends on the equipment package and provider. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identifies uneven steps, throw rugs, and clutter as home hazards that can contribute to falls, but an alarm system does not remove those hazards or establish that it prevents falls. Make usability part of the decision
Prioritize controls the resident can operate, clear alerts, accessible support, and an installation process they are comfortable with. Six systems and alternatives to consider
The first five options below appear in SafeHome’s 2026 senior-focused comparison. Its authors say they tested systems; the descriptions here report the source’s positioning rather than claiming independent hands-on testing for this article. Ring Alarm is included as a broader alternative because Security.org lists it as a home-security example, but it was not compared alongside the five in the cited senior ranking. Neither source establishes a like-for-like, independently verified ranking of six senior systems.

When a medical alert matters more than a security alarm
If the resident needs to summon help after a fall, cannot reliably reach a phone, or wants coverage beyond the home, evaluate a medical-alert service separately. A wearable help button or pendant can provide a direct way to request assistance. Some devices offer fall detection or mobile coverage, but those features are model- and service-specific; having a home alarm or security-system panic button does not prove that either is present.

ADT’s official pages describe in-home and on-the-go medical-alert systems, waterproof wearable buttons, GPS on its mobile option, and optional fall detection on certain devices. These are ADT’s descriptions of its products, not independent findings about detection accuracy. Confirm which device and service include each feature before relying on it: ADT medical alert systems and ADT’s announcement of new medical-alert systems.
The scale of fall risk makes it worth treating this as a distinct safety question. The CDC reports about 4.5 million emergency-department visits due to falls among older people each year, including about 3.1 million visits resulting in treatment and release and 1.4 million hospitalizations. It also reports that about 37% of older people who fall experience an injury requiring medical treatment or activity restriction for at least one day. These CDC figures describe fall-related harm; they do not show that a particular alarm or alert device prevents falls. CDC fall statistics and prevention information.

Set up caregiver access without making the home feel monitored
Remote alerts can help a caregiver notice a system event, and camera access may help with a specific agreed-upon need. Include the older adult in decisions about which people receive alerts, what they can access, and where cameras are placed. Avoid cameras in private spaces. A security app can support communication, but it is not a substitute for a medical-alert response path when immediate help may be needed.

A practical way to make the final choice
- Write down the main concern. Separate burglary or environmental alerts from fall response and emergency help outside the home.
- Choose an installation style. Decide whether the resident wants a professional to install the system or is comfortable with a DIY setup and ongoing app use.
- Confirm the response path. Ask who is notified when an alarm triggers, whether monitoring is active, and how the resident or caregiver can contact help.
- Check the actual package. Verify that the needed door, motion, smoke, carbon-monoxide, temperature, or water sensors are included or supported, rather than assuming they come with a starter kit.
- Review current costs and terms. Check equipment, installation, recurring monitoring fees, contract length, and cancellation conditions directly with the provider.
- Test the controls with the resident. Have them practice arming and disarming, responding to alerts, and using any wearable help button. Keep instructions easy to find.
For an older adult who wants professional setup and monitoring, ADT is the clearest full-service candidate in these comparisons. For someone comfortable handling setup who wants a DIY route with professional monitoring available, SimpliSafe is a reasonable option to investigate. The remaining choices depend on the user’s comfort with smart-home features, budget, and willingness to confirm the current installation and service arrangement. None should be chosen as a stand-in for a medical-alert service when wearable or mobile emergency response is needed.
