Upgrade the firearm you use most, and choose the attachment that fixes your current handling problem. Hellraiser: Revival does not have an evidence-backed universal “best first upgrade.” The available launch guides explain that attachments alter handling, each firearm has five upgrade slots, and the right choice depends on your playstyle, ammunition habits, and the encounters ahead. A larger magazine can be sensible if reloads are getting you hit; a fire-rate change can suit a player who needs faster follow-up shots. Neither option has been proven to deliver the best damage, survival, or resource efficiency for every player.
That makes your first purchase a decision about consistency rather than a chase for a hidden tier list. Check the compatible gun, the effect you want, its price or location, and the other attachments that may compete for the same five slots before spending.
What “upgrade first” means in Hellraiser: Revival
Hellraiser: Revival is a single-player first-person action horror survival game released on October 8, 2026, according to Saber Interactive’s official support FAQ. The launch FAQ lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam versions. Its combat mixes conventional firearms and breakable melee weapons with the Genesis Configuration’s special abilities. The arsenal described by the game’s coverage includes a pistol, revolver, submachine gun, assault rifle, shotgun, knives and bats, alongside telekinesis and pyrokinesis.
Weapon upgrading is attachment-based for firearms. You select an attachment in the inventory and install it on a compatible gun. Thumb Wars and NowGame both describe five firearm upgrade slots, while the pool of possible attachments can be larger than those five spaces. In practice, an attachment is not automatically “better” because it is available: equipping it means giving up one slot that could hold another effect later.

Creative Bloq’s review also describes scavenged junk being used to craft ammunition and health. An upgrade therefore has an opportunity cost beyond its coin price: a handling change that makes you miss less or reload less often can preserve ammunition and healing supplies, while an unsuitable attachment simply consumes a slot and resources.
The four-question decision framework
Use this order whenever you reach a shop or find a new attachment. It keeps an attractive but irrelevant upgrade from consuming your early currency.
- Which firearm is doing most of your work? Choose the gun you actually draw in ordinary encounters, not the one with the most impressive name. A rarely used weapon gives little return from an early slot.
- What handling problem is costing you? Identify the repeated failure: running dry during a group fight, losing time to reloads, struggling with follow-up shots, or wasting ammunition because the weapon feels difficult to control. The guides specifically describe changes such as fire rate and magazine size, so select an effect that addresses your observed problem.
- Is the attachment compatible and affordable now? Verify the gun requirement in your inventory, then check the listed shop price or acquisition location. Stock and prices can depend on progression and shop visit.
- What will this slot prevent later? Each firearm has five slots. Look through the other available attachments before committing, especially if you are near a new shop or a major progression point.
This process is practical guidance inferred from the documented mechanics, not a tested optimal route. No reviewed guide supplies controlled damage tests, complete weapon statistics or a campaign-wide best order.

Early example: the pistol at Zora’s first shop
NowGame’s launch guide lists two early pistol options at Zora’s first shop: Hair Trigger for 150 Coins and Extended Magazine for 180 Coins. These figures are launch-version examples, not evidence that either attachment is stronger. The guide does not provide comparative effectiveness data, and a later patch or a different progression state could change availability.

If you are unsure, do not buy merely because the option is present. Observe one or two encounters, identify whether reload timing or shot cadence is the real problem, and then spend on the pistol only if it is the weapon you are carrying into those fights.
How to choose by weapon type
Pistol
The pistol is a reasonable first candidate when it is your dependable sidearm and shop stock appears early. Its documented examples make the decision concrete: Hair Trigger favors a player seeking a different firing response, while Extended Magazine favors a player whose reloads interrupt fights. Pick one based on the failure you can name, not on the lower price alone.

Revolver
Choose a revolver attachment only if you routinely rely on the revolver. A slower, deliberate weapon may reward an effect that supports your timing, but the available material does not quantify its damage, rate of fire, accuracy or ammunition economy. Do not transfer the pistol’s early-shop logic to the revolver without checking its own compatible attachments and slot competition.

An SMG can consume ammunition quickly during sustained fire. If it is your main answer to close or medium-range groups, examine whether magazine capacity or firing behavior addresses your actual interruptions. Because ammunition is crafted from scavenged junk, an attachment that encourages wasteful spraying may be a poor fit even when the gun feels powerful.
Assault rifle
The assault rifle is worth an early slot only when it is part of your regular loadout. Compare the handling change with the encounters you are currently facing and reserve space for alternatives you may obtain later. The guides identify the rifle as an upgradeable firearm but do not establish a tested attachment ranking.

Shotgun
For a shotgun, consider how often you need another shell before you can safely reposition. A capacity-oriented choice may help one player, while another may prefer a different handling effect. Since no published comparison gives shotgun attachment performance, judge it by your reload exposure and the weapon’s role in your own fights.
Knives, bats and the Deluxe Nailer
Breakable knives and bats are part of the melee arsenal, and the official FAQ confirms that the Deluxe Nailer is a full melee weapon obtained from Zora’s shop at the first encounter. It is distinct from cosmetic weapon skins. The five-slot attachment system described by the guides applies to firearms; do not assume that a cosmetic skin or the Nailer follows the same upgrade rules. If melee is carrying most encounters for you, preserve coins for the melee purchase or other needs instead of forcing an early firearm attachment.
Step-by-step: installing an attachment safely
- Open the inventory. Select the firearm you intend to modify rather than browsing the attachment list in isolation.
- Review compatibility. Choose an attachment shown as installable for that specific gun. If the game does not offer the install action, the item is not a valid match for your current weapon.
- Read the handling effect. Confirm whether the change concerns fire rate, magazine size or another stated behavior. Treat the description as a handling change, not as a promise of superior damage.
- Count occupied slots. Note how many of the firearm’s five slots are already used and which alternatives you would lose by filling the next one.
- Check your resources. Confirm the coin cost, shop stage or pickup requirement, and leave enough currency for ammunition, health or a weapon you are deliberately saving for.
- Install, then test in real encounters. Use the modified gun through several fights. Watch reload timing, ammunition consumption and whether the changed firing behavior actually reduces mistakes.
- Reassess before the next purchase. New shops and progression can add choices. A first attachment is not a commitment to use every later slot on the same type of effect.
Timing your spending through the campaign
At the first shop
Early currency is scarce because it may also support health, ammunition and other equipment. The pistol examples at Zora’s first shop are useful precisely because they illustrate a choice, not because they define a mandatory opening. Buy when the attachment solves a recurring problem on a gun you are already using.

After the arsenal expands
NowGame’s list covers upgrade locations and shop examples for the pistol, shotgun, SMG, revolver and assault rifle. As more firearms enter your loadout, reassess which one appears in the most encounters. A previously sensible pistol slot may be less valuable if the campaign has shifted you toward an SMG or rifle.
Before filling all five slots
Five slots create a planning constraint. Keep one open when you have no clear need, particularly if the available pool is growing faster than your understanding of the weapon. Slot scarcity matters more than collecting every attachment.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Treating price as a power rating. A 180-Coin attachment is not demonstrated to be better than a 150-Coin attachment. Prices describe acquisition, not measured effectiveness.
- Upgrading the gun you expect to use someday. Follow NowGame’s practical advice and invest in weapons you actually use. Save the slot for the weapon currently solving encounters.
- Ignoring ammunition and reload exposure. A handling change that looks attractive on paper can increase waste or leave you exposed during a reload. Track what is happening in fights.
- Confusing skins with weapons. The Deluxe Nailer is a full melee weapon; cosmetic weapon skins are a separate category in the official FAQ.
- Assuming launch details are permanent. The listed prices, shop stock and locations are tied to the launch coverage. Patches or progression differences may alter them.
- Looking for a universal tier list. The reviewed material contains no controlled comparative test. Any claim that one attachment is the best for every player goes beyond the available evidence.
What is actually known about the “best” first upgrade?
At launch, the defensible answer is conditional: use your most frequently deployed firearm and select the attachment that removes its biggest handling obstacle, while protecting the five-slot budget. The documented system supports that approach, but it does not support a universal winner.
