Give a smart-ring wellness app only the read or write access required for the feature you intend to use. Leave unrelated health categories off, inspect what data moves in each direction, and remember that revoking permission later does not automatically erase copies the app already received.
Start with the feature, not the permission list
A setup screen may ask for many health categories, but a long list is not proof that every category is necessary. Begin by naming the feature you want: importing sleep trends, combining activity from several devices, writing workouts into a shared health record, or viewing weight alongside ring data. For each requested category, ask: “What would stop working if I denied this?” If the answer is “nothing I plan to use,” leave it disabled.
A wellness app may need no health-store connection at all. If its ring dashboard works from data collected directly by the ring, do not enable an additional connection simply because the app offers one. The least-permission choice is usually the most privacy-preserving starting point, and you can expand access if a specific feature needs it.
Read and write are different powers
Read permission lets the app use information already stored in Apple Health or Android Health Connect. Write permission lets it add information to that shared record. Treat them independently:

- Allow reads only for data the app needs to provide your chosen feature.
- Allow writes only for measurements or events you actually want the app to contribute.
- Do not grant a write category merely because the app also asks to read the same category.
For example, an app that displays your weight alongside ring trends may need to read weight. It does not automatically need permission to write weight. Conversely, an app that records a workout may need to write workouts but not read blood pressure.
Use this permission-by-permission decision framework
- Identify the data type. Read the exact category name, such as sleep, heart rate, activity, weight, blood pressure, or heart-rate variability.
- Identify the direction. Determine whether the request is for reading, writing, importing, exporting, or both.
- Connect it to a feature. Write down the feature that depends on that category. If you cannot name one, deny the request initially.
- Check where the data goes. Review the app’s privacy policy for storage, sharing, retention, deletion, and account requirements.
- Test the feature. Deny unrelated categories and confirm that the feature you care about still works.
- Revisit only when needed. Add a category later if a clearly identified function cannot operate without it.
Apple says a HealthKit app does not know whether you denied a read permission. That design means an app should not be able to treat a denied category as evidence that you do not have a condition or that a measurement is absent. A missing value may simply mean you chose not to share it.
Apple Health: choose individual data types and directions
Third-party apps do not receive Health app data by default. You choose what to share, and HealthKit separates access by data type and by read versus write.

Grant access during setup
When the wellness app presents the Apple Health authorization sheet, review every category instead of accepting a blanket selection. Turn off categories unrelated to the feature you named. If the app asks to write data, confirm that you want those records in your shared Health history; writing can create entries that other authorized apps may later read.
Change access after connecting
To review or change the connection, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Health, select the wellness app, and adjust the listed data types. Apple provides separate controls for information the app may read and information it may write. Use those controls to narrow an existing connection rather than deleting the entire app account when only one category is a concern.

Check the app’s privacy commitments
Apple requires apps using HealthKit to provide a privacy policy explaining how to revoke consent or request deletion. HealthKit guidance also prohibits using or disclosing HealthKit data for advertising or other data-mining purposes. Those platform rules do not replace reading the individual app’s policy: check its retention period, service providers, account deletion process, and whether data is copied to the developer’s servers.
Expect two-way data flow
A ring application can both export ring measurements to Apple Health and import profile or health values from it. For example, Oura’s Apple Health integration says linking can import height, weight, age, and sex into Oura. Those values cannot be edited in Oura until the services are unlinked. This illustrates why you should inspect incoming permissions as carefully as outgoing ring data.

Health Connect presents permissions for specific data types and stores its database on the device. A connected app can access the last 30 days of data and new data after access is granted; the 30-day limit does not apply to health records.
Review an app’s access
- Open Health Connect.
- Choose App permissions.
- Select the wellness or smart-ring app.
- Turn off individual read or write data types you do not want it to use.
Removing an app connection revokes its read and write permissions. You can therefore start with a narrow set, test the feature, and add one category at a time if necessary.
Understand the device database and copies
Changing permissions does not delete data already stored in Health Connect. Google also warns that other apps or devices may keep copies. Deleting a record from Health Connect alone may therefore leave copies in the ring service, the wellness app, a cloud account, or another connected device. Treat permission controls and deletion controls as separate tasks.

What a smart-ring integration may actually exchange
There is no universal minimum permission set for every ring app. Vendors expose different measurements, and eligibility can depend on the ring generation, operating system, geography, feature, or membership.

Example: Oura and Health Connect
Oura documents an Android-only Health Connect integration. Its listed export categories include activity, sleep, heart rate, and heart-rate variability. Listed import categories include activity, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate. The documented eligible hardware is Gen2 and Gen3 or later with an active membership. These lists describe that integration, not a requirement for every wellness app or every Oura feature.
Check the current in-app screen before enabling anything. A vendor can change eligible devices, membership rules, or category support, and an app may request a category only for an optional feature. If you do not use that feature, deny the category and see whether the rest of the integration works.
Direct partner connections
Ring vendors may also offer direct integrations with partner services. Some can require an active membership, and sharing may be managed or revoked in the ring app’s settings rather than in Apple Health or Health Connect. Assess each connection separately. A direct partner link does not justify granting broad platform permissions to an unrelated app.
Compare a direct connection with a platform-mediated connection
Before you approve either route, compare the practical consequences rather than assuming one is automatically safer.

How to withdraw access safely
Step 1: Revoke the platform permission
On Apple devices, return to Settings > Privacy & Security > Health, select the app, and switch off the unwanted read or write categories. On Android, use Health Connect > App permissions, select the app, and disable individual categories or remove the connection.
Step 2: Check the app’s own account settings
Look for controls named connected services, integrations, shared data, disconnect, revoke, export, or delete account. A platform revocation stops future access through that permission, but it does not necessarily remove data the app already imported or uploaded.
Step 3: Request deletion when necessary
If you want copies removed, follow the app’s documented deletion process or contact its privacy channel. Ask specifically about data held in the account, backups, analytics systems, partner services, and devices. Health Connect’s stored records and an app’s independent copy may require separate deletion actions.
Step 4: Confirm the result
After revoking access, reopen the app and check whether synchronization has stopped. Review the platform permission page again, and watch for a new authorization prompt. If the app continues to display old history, that may be cached or previously stored data rather than evidence that the revoked permission is still active.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Accepting “Allow all” without reading
Broad approval is convenient but can expose categories unrelated to your goal. Pause at the authorization screen and disable anything you cannot connect to a feature.

Confusing a missing value with a denied condition
A wellness app may show an empty chart because it lacks permission, because no measurement exists, or because synchronization has not completed. On Apple platforms, the app cannot reliably distinguish a denied read permission, so do not infer a medical conclusion from a blank field.
Granting write access unnecessarily
Writes add records to a shared health history. If you only want the ring app to display data, deny write categories and enable reads that support the display.
Assuming revocation erases history
Turning off access controls future sharing. It does not automatically delete copies already received by the app, a vendor account, or another device. Use the app’s deletion process separately.
Ignoring eligibility details
An integration can work only for certain operating systems, ring generations, memberships, or regions. Confirm those conditions in the current app instead of enabling extra categories to troubleshoot an incompatibility.
A practical minimum-permission checklist
- Name the exact feature you want before connecting the ring app.
- Approve only the data types that feature needs.
- Keep read and write permissions separate.
- Inspect both exported ring measurements and imported profile or health values.
- Review the app privacy policy, retention terms, and deletion instructions.
- Use Apple Health or Health Connect settings to narrow or revoke access later.
- Remember that revocation and deletion are different operations.
- Recheck compatibility, membership, and category lists whenever the app or ring changes.
Bottom line for Apple Health and Health Connect users
The right permission set is the smallest one that supports the feature you actually use. Start with no connection when possible; otherwise allow only the required read or write categories, test the feature, and expand access deliberately. Review the app’s policy and storage practices before sharing sensitive measurements, and use the platform controls to revoke access when your needs change. If you also want previously transferred data removed, make a separate deletion request because turning off permission alone may leave existing copies in the app or on connected devices.
