The best headphones for TV are the ones that connect to your television’s available audio output, stay in sync with the picture, and remain comfortable for the length of a show. For many viewers, a dedicated TV headphone system with a transmitter is the simplest route to private listening and low-latency audio. Bluetooth headphones offer more flexibility across devices, while wired headphones can be a straightforward choice if the TV has a compatible output.
Which type of TV headphones should you choose?
Start with the connection and listening arrangement you need, not a headline feature. Dedicated transmitter systems are built for TV use; Bluetooth headphones are more versatile but depend on compatibility between the TV and headphones; wired headphones avoid wireless pairing and charging if the TV has a suitable output.
| Type | How it connects | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated TV headphones | A transmitter commonly connects to the TV through optical digital or 3.5 mm analog audio. | Private listening, independent headphone volume, and a TV-focused setup designed to reduce audio delay. | Available TV outputs, supported audio format, whether TV speakers can remain on, and support for an additional receiver. |
| Bluetooth headphones or earbuds | Pair directly with a Bluetooth-equipped TV. | Viewers who also want to use their headphones with phones or other devices. | TV and headset compatibility, supported codecs, lip-sync behavior, and whether the TV permits simultaneous speaker output. |
| Wired headphones | Connect to a compatible 3.5 mm output; stereo RCA outputs may work with an appropriate adapter. | A simple listening setup without wireless pairing or headphone battery concerns. | Confirm the actual TV ports and any adapter requirement before buying. |
For connection guidance, see Crutchfield’s guide to connecting wireless TV headphones and TechRadar’s TV headphone guide. Bluetooth support and audio options vary by television, so neither should be assumed from one model to another.
What are the strongest TV headphone options?

| Model | What stands out | Trade-offs or qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser RS 195 RF Wireless | RTINGS names it its best tested TV headphone system in its 2026 guide. It uses a low-latency transmitter dock, offers optical and analog connections, personalized sound profiles, and virtual surround. | RTINGS reports that fit affects bass, glasses or thick hair may reduce bass, and some contact points may become sore. It reports around 19 hours of battery life and more than eight hours for a full charge. RTINGS’ testing and review states that it has tested more than 910 headphone pairs; that is the publisher’s testing count, not a TV-headphone market statistic. |
| Sennheiser RS 175 RF Wireless | A less customizable dedicated transmitter option with low-latency connection, bass and virtual-surround controls, and approximately 24 hours of playback, according to RTINGS. Crutchfield says it connects by optical or stereo 3.5 mm; a second compatible headset can let two listeners adjust volume independently. | It lacks the RS 195’s personal hearing profiles, cannot be used for wired listening when its battery is depleted, and fit can affect bass. See Crutchfield’s RS 175 product information. |
| Sennheiser RS 275 TV Headphones bundle | Announced January 22, 2026, the bundle includes HDR 275 TV Headphones and a BTA1 digital transmitter. Sennheiser describes Auracast transmission using the LC3 Bluetooth codec, low-latency synchronization, and range up to 50 metres. | The range is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a guarantee for every room or setup. Check compatibility and local availability. See Sennheiser’s announcement. |
| Sennheiser RS 255 | Sennheiser’s product page lists speech clarity, four hearing profiles, volume normalization, independent left/right levels, Auracast broadcast listening, and up to 50 hours of playtime. | The 50-hour figure is a manufacturer-stated maximum on the product page accessed in 2026; actual runtime can vary. See Sennheiser’s RS 255 product page and its TV headphone support information. |
| Avantree HT5009 Plus | Designed around dialogue controls, it lists Clear Voice mode, independent headphone volume, optical PCM and 3.5 mm inputs, and support for up to two receivers. | Avantree claims latency under 68 ms, but says performance depends on the TV and connection method; smart-TV Bluetooth may cause noticeable delay. The company says this is not hearing-aid-level amplification or medical hearing support. See Avantree’s HT5009 Plus product page. |
| Sony WH-RF400 | Crutchfield describes an RF system with a 3.5 mm transmitter connection, voice mode, and charging dock. Its stated line-of-sight range is up to 150 feet. | The range is a product claim for line-of-sight conditions. Current stock and price are not established here. See Crutchfield’s WH-RF400 product information. |
How do you connect wireless headphones to a TV?
The exact menu names differ by television, but the connection process depends on whether you are pairing Bluetooth headphones or connecting a transmitter to the TV’s audio output.
With a dedicated transmitter
- Check the TV’s ports and the transmitter’s inputs. Optical digital and 3.5 mm analog are common; use an adapter only when it matches the TV output and transmitter input.
- Connect the transmitter to the TV using the appropriate cable, then power it on and place it in pairing or connection mode as described by its manufacturer.
- Open the TV’s sound or audio settings and select the relevant audio output. If using optical digital, set the TV’s digital audio format to a format the transmitter supports; some setups require PCM.
- Pair or dock the headphones according to the system instructions, then play a program and check lip-sync and volume.
- If you want the TV speakers to stay on, enable that output only if the TV supports it. Confirm whether the system allows a second receiver or shared listening.
Crutchfield explains common wireless TV headphone connections in its connection guide. Avantree also notes that its HT5009 Plus optical connection requires PCM-compatible TV output in the product information linked above.

With Bluetooth headphones
- Put the headphones or earbuds into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- In the TV’s Bluetooth or sound-output settings, select the option to add or pair an audio device, then choose the headphones from the list.
- Play dialogue and check for delay. If lip-sync is distracting, consult the TV’s audio-delay or sync setting, or use a TV-focused transmitter system instead.
Menu labels and available options vary by TV. Do not assume Bluetooth pairing means the TV can also play through its built-in speakers at the same time.

Will TV headphones make dialogue clearer?
They can make speech easier to hear for some listeners, especially when a headset has a speech or voice mode, sound profiles, volume normalization, or separate left/right level controls. These features let you tailor listening, but they are not medical treatment and do not turn headphones into hearing aids. Avantree explicitly says the HT5009 Plus is not intended for hearing-aid-level amplification.

For dialogue-oriented features, the Avantree HT5009 Plus lists Clear Voice mode, while Sennheiser describes speech clarity and personal profiles on the RS 255. Feature names and results differ by model; look for controls that address your actual listening preference rather than assuming a feature will work the same for every person.
How can two people listen at different volumes?
Some transmitter systems let headphone users control their own volume while the TV speakers remain active, but this depends on both the TV and the headphone system. Crutchfield says a second compatible RS 175 headset can allow two listeners to set independent volumes. Sennheiser describes its TV headphone systems as supporting private listening and, where the setup permits, shared listening with TV speakers on.

Auracast-enabled products offer another possible shared-listening arrangement: Sennheiser describes the RS 275 as transmitting an Auracast broadcast. Check the specific transmitter and receiving headphones for compatibility; the presence of Bluetooth alone does not establish that a system can broadcast to multiple listeners.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should you check before buying?
- TV output: Identify whether the television has optical, 3.5 mm, RCA, or Bluetooth audio output. Confirm any adapter or converter is appropriate for the ports and audio format.
- Synchronization: Bluetooth can introduce lag depending on the TV, headphones, and supported codecs. Dedicated TV transmitters are designed to reduce lip-sync problems, but performance still varies by model and setup.
- Dialogue tools: Compare speech modes, personal profiles, volume normalization, and independent ear-level adjustment if these matter to you.
- Listening arrangement: Decide whether only headphones should play, whether TV speakers must remain on, or whether a second receiver or Auracast broadcast is needed.
- Long-session comfort: Consider fit and pressure, especially with glasses or thick hair. RTINGS notes that fit can affect RS 195 bass response and that some contact points may become sore over time.
- Charging: Compare runtime, charging time, and whether the transmitter dock also charges the headset. The RS 195 and RS 175 figures above come from RTINGS’ model descriptions and review.
- Other-device use: If you also want headphones for a phone or other devices, check whether the model supports those connections and whether using it away from the TV is convenient.
When are wired headphones the better choice?
Wired headphones can be a sensible option if your TV has a compatible 3.5 mm headphone output and you prefer to avoid wireless pairing and charging. If the TV has stereo RCA outputs instead, an appropriate adapter may work. Verify the television’s ports and headphone requirements first: an adapter does not guarantee compatibility with every TV. TechRadar also describes these wired connection options in its TV headphone guide.
