Prioritize the technologies that advance the activity you actually want to do next. For production and town rebuilding, investigate workstations, material-processing and automation unlocks. For combat, favor technologies that support your preferred mix of personal fighting, archer squads, barricades or potions. For graveyard-focused play, follow quest requirements and unlock whatever removes the next progression gate. There is no proven universal order: the best technology priority is goal-dependent, and exact costs and prerequisites can change with patches.
Graveyard Keeper 2 is a single-player game by Lazy Bear Games, published by tinyBuild. The Steam listing gives September 22, 2026 as its release date and identifies graveyard management, production automation, town rebuilding and undead combat as core activities.
How the Technology Tree and talents fit together
Lazy Bear Games says the sequel keeps the familiar Technology Tree and adds a separate talent system. In the developer’s words: “We’re also keeping the familiar progression through the Technology Tree, while introducing a new talent system designed to make the grind you love so much more enjoyable.” Treat these as two progression layers rather than one giant list. Technologies open capabilities, recipes, infrastructure or other activities; talents are an additional way to shape your character.

Which Graveyard Keeper 2 technologies should you prioritize for your playstyle?
Use this four-part test whenever you have enough research resources for a new unlock:
- Name the immediate goal. Is the next objective a production bottleneck, a rebuilding task, a graveyard quest or a combat encounter?
- Find the shortest useful gate. Choose the technology that enables that goal, or the nearest prerequisite if the final unlock is not yet available.
- Check the whole dependency chain. A tempting late-branch technology can require several earlier unlocks, making a cheaper intermediate technology more valuable now.
- Preserve flexibility. After the immediate gate is cleared, invest in the recurring activity you enjoy most instead of automatically following a branch to its end.
The first two tests prevent wasted research; the last two prevent a route that looks powerful on paper but leaves your current save unable to perform its next task.

Production and town rebuilding: build capability before convenience
Start with the bottleneck you can see
If a construction project is waiting for processed wood, stone, storage or a workstation, prioritize the technology that supplies that exact capability. A technology that lets you complete today’s building objective is usually more useful than a distant automation unlock whose prerequisites you cannot yet satisfy. Read the displayed prerequisite chain before spending research points.
Use infrastructure as the bridge to automation
The planner’s examples illustrate a likely progression pattern: wood and stone work establish material processing; a Tool Rack represents work infrastructure; Zombie Assistant and conveyors point toward labor or movement automation; marble-related work belongs to a later materials goal. Do not treat that list as a mandatory order. Instead, use it to ask which stage your settlement currently lacks:
- Raw-material stage: unlock the work that turns gathered inputs into the materials your current project consumes.
- Station stage: add the rack, bench or other infrastructure required to make production practical.
- Automation stage: pursue assistants or conveyors when repeated hauling, crafting or transport is taking more of your play time than exploration.
- Expansion-material stage: move toward specialized work, such as marble, only when a quest or build actually calls for it.
This approach gives automation a purpose. It avoids paying for a sophisticated chain while your settlement still lacks a basic material or station.

When rebuilding is your main objective
Town rebuilding creates a different priority signal from ordinary crafting. Choose the technology that unblocks the next structural requirement, then inspect whether its prerequisites also improve your production loop. For example, a material-processing unlock can be a good choice when it both supplies a building and feeds a later automated line. The benefit is practical flexibility, not a demonstrated numerical advantage.
Combat-focused play: choose a tactic, then support it
Understand the encounter calendar
Lazy Bear Games says town battles occur on one particular day of the week, while the sewers are available for combat six days out of six. That schedule means combat preparation has two rhythms: a predictable weekly town encounter and more frequent sewer opportunities. Plan research around the encounter you are preparing for rather than assuming every combat technology is equally urgent.
Personal fighting
If you prefer to do the fighting yourself, prioritize technologies that remove the equipment, resource or access barrier for your next expedition. Keep enough research capacity for survivability or recovery tools if a quest requires repeated attempts. The available sources do not identify a specific weapon or personal-combat technology as universally superior, so do not convert this preference into a fixed branch order.
Archer-squad tactics
The developer explicitly names archer squads as a possible tactic. A squad-oriented player should look for technologies that make ranged support available, affordable or easier to deploy, then verify the prerequisites in the current tree. Because no source measures squad damage or resource efficiency, the correct priority is the first unlock that enables your planned encounter, not a claim that archers are mathematically best.
Spiked barricades and defensive preparation
Spiked barricades are another developer-named option. They suit players who would rather shape the battlefield and survive a push than rely entirely on direct attacks. Prioritize the technology that enables the defensive structure when a town battle is approaching, and leave room for the materials needed to build it. A barricade route can be sensible even if it is not the fastest route for a player who rarely fights in defended spaces.

Combat potions
Combat potions are also listed among the game’s tactics. Potion-focused players should check both the technology prerequisite and the production chain for ingredients. An unlock is only useful for the upcoming fight if you can obtain and process its inputs in time. Treat the potion branch as a preparation route, not as proof that consumables outperform squads or structures.
Graveyard management and general progression
Follow the next required task
The official store description makes graveyard management central, but the available material does not establish a tested sequence of graveyard technologies or a relative efficiency ranking. The safest priority is therefore local: read the current quest, identify the technology required for its next step, and unlock that requirement or its nearest prerequisite.
Use general-purpose unlocks when the quest is open-ended
When several technologies satisfy the immediate objective, choose the one that also supports a recurring activity you enjoy. A work-infrastructure unlock may help both graveyard upkeep and town rebuilding; a production unlock may reduce the time spent preparing materials for repeated quests. This is a practical tie-breaker, not a claim that one branch is globally optimal.
Do not confuse visibility with value
A technology displayed prominently in a planner is not necessarily the one your current save needs. Graveyard progression can be gated by a quest condition, a material, a station or access to another area. The relevant question is not “Which branch looks largest?” but “Which prerequisite removes the obstruction in front of my next objective?”

- Recheck the tree after each major unlock because newly available prerequisites can change the value of the next choice.
For example, after unlocking a material process needed for a town project, a mixed player might choose a graveyard-related requirement for the next quest rather than immediately pursuing every automation prerequisite. Once the quest is clear, returning to an assistant or conveyor route can reduce repetitive work. This alternation keeps the save moving without pretending that one branch is best for every player.

Use this checklist before confirming a research purchase:
- Goal: What specific task will this unlock complete?
- Timing: Is the task needed before the next town battle, sewer trip or quest deadline?
- Prerequisites: Which technologies sit between this choice and the capability you want?
- Inputs: Can your current production chain supply the required research materials?
- Frequency: Will you use the capability once, or on most future work cycles?
- Fallback: If a patch changes the cost or prerequisite, what adjacent technology still helps your save?
If you cannot answer the inputs question, inspect the in-game cost display first. The planner reports costs, but exact values should be confirmed against your current version.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Following a copied “best build”
No reviewed source includes hands-on testing, save-file analysis or a controlled comparison of technology routes. A universal ranking would therefore overstate the evidence. Replace a copied order with the four-part test: goal, gate, prerequisites and recurring use.

The Technology Tree is dependency-based. If the final technology is several steps away, the correct short-term choice may be the prerequisite that also improves today’s production or quest. Map the chain and count the resources required before committing.

Planning from an outdated planner entry
Third-party planners are valuable references, but a patch can alter names, costs or prerequisites. Compare the planner with the current in-game tree and treat any disagreement in the game client as authoritative for your save.
Preparing for the wrong combat window
Town battles occur on one day of the week, while sewer combat is available six days out of six. If a town encounter is imminent, prioritize the tactic you can actually deploy before that day; if you are exploring sewers, a longer-term combat route may be acceptable.
Spending on automation before securing inputs
Assistants and conveyors cannot solve a missing raw material, station or recipe. Establish the material and infrastructure stages first, then invest in automation when the repeated task is genuinely consuming your time.
What is known about the game’s current context
Lazy Bear Games announced that more than 400,000 copies had been sold across available platforms as of September 24, 2026. That figure indicates strong early interest, but it says nothing about which technology route wins encounters or saves time. Technology choices should remain tied to your objectives rather than popularity.
The most defensible conclusion from the current descriptions is therefore conditional: production players should investigate material and automation infrastructure; combat players should match research to a chosen tactic and encounter schedule; graveyard players should clear quest gates; and mixed players should alternate immediate requirements with recurring conveniences.
