Start with comfort and legibility, not visual effects: enlarge text, make controls and audio usable, and enable any accessibility options you need. Then set display mode, resolution, and a frame-rate target your hardware can sustain. If performance is poor, try the game’s preset or supported scaling feature, then change one visual setting at a time and retest during representative card-gameplay. The exact labels and best values depend on the title, platform, display, and the problem you are trying to solve.
1. Make the interface readable and the controls comfortable
Card-based RPGs put critical information in small areas: card text, costs, status icons, turn order, tooltips, combat logs, and damage previews. A spectacular image is not useful if you must lean toward the screen to read a card or repeatedly open a menu to understand an effect. Check the game’s comfort and accessibility menus before reducing graphical quality.
Text size and UI scale
If the game offers text-size, subtitle-size, interface-scale, or HUD-scale controls, adjust those first. Increase only as far as necessary; an oversized HUD can cover the battlefield or hide card descriptions. Check the smallest text you actually encounter, such as a tooltip or inventory statistic, rather than judging the title screen.
The Steam listing for Slay the Spire identifies adjustable text size as an available feature. That is evidence that this particular card-focused game supports the option, not a guarantee that every card RPG does. If no in-game control exists, look for platform-level display scaling or an operating-system magnifier, while remembering that those tools may enlarge menus unevenly.

Input and interaction options
Choose the input method that lets you select cards accurately and quickly. Look for remapping, cursor speed, controller sensitivity, toggle-versus-hold actions, confirmation prompts, and options that remove repeated button presses. The same Steam listing documents mouse-only and touch-only options for Slay the Spire; other games may expose different combinations.
Test a complete turn: select a card, inspect its details, target an enemy or ally, cancel the action, and end the turn. If a control is difficult to reach or accidental clicks are common, solve that before lowering texture or shadow quality. On a controller, verify that the focus highlight is visible and that the selection cursor does not jump between cards unexpectedly.
Audio and accessibility
Set master, music, effects, voice, and interface volumes separately when those controls exist. Card sounds and warnings should be audible without making narration or music uncomfortable. Captions, color-blind modes, high-contrast indicators, reduced-motion options, screen-reader support, and difficulty selections may be available under Accessibility rather than Graphics. Steamworks documentation describes difficulty settings as one way accessibility features can let players match an experience to their abilities and preferences.

Also check pause and saving behavior. The Slay the Spire Steam listing includes save-anytime as a feature. In a different game, saving may be restricted to checkpoints or a run-ending screen, so do not assume that changing a setting is risk-free during a battle.
2. Confirm display mode, resolution, and a sustainable frame-rate target
Once the game is comfortable to use, establish a stable display baseline. On PC, open the Video, Display, or Graphics menu and record the current display mode, resolution, refresh rate, frame-rate limit, and synchronization options. On a console or handheld, some of these choices are controlled by the system rather than the game.

Display mode
Try the modes the title actually offers: fullscreen, borderless windowed, or windowed. Fullscreen can give a game more direct control over the display, while borderless mode is convenient for switching applications; the practical result varies by operating system, driver, and game engine. Keep the mode that behaves reliably with your monitor, capture software, and other applications.
Resolution and aspect ratio
Use the display’s native resolution when performance and readability allow it. If the image is too demanding, lower the in-game resolution or use a supported scaling feature rather than changing several unrelated options at once. Check that the aspect ratio is correct and that card edges, text, and icons are not stretched or cropped. A resolution change can make UI text softer even when it improves frame delivery, so inspect a dense card description after every change.
Frame-rate target and refresh behavior
Pick a frame-rate target your system can hold during the busiest part of a run, not just in a quiet menu. A consistent target usually feels better than a higher number that repeatedly drops during effects, map transitions, or large encounters. Card games often spend more time on menus and turn-based decisions than on rapid camera movement, but animations and input still benefit from steadiness.
EA’s official PC video-settings guide for Jedi: Fallen Order lists Window Mode, Max FPS, VSync, and Dynamic Resolution Scaling among its video settings. Those labels illustrate the kinds of controls you may find; they do not establish universal defaults for a card-based RPG.
3. Use a preset or supported scaling feature when performance is poor
Presets as a starting point
If the game offers Low, Medium, High, or similar presets, apply one near the performance level you need, restart or reload if prompted, and then inspect the result. A preset changes several values together, so it is useful for finding a workable baseline but not for identifying which option caused a problem. Re-enable important readability options after applying it; a preset may reduce UI scale, effects, or post-processing in ways that are uncomfortable.

Dynamic resolution and upscaling
Some games can vary internal rendering resolution to maintain a target, or reconstruct a sharper image from a lower internal resolution. Use only the methods the title and your hardware support. Roberts Space Industries documents DLSS for supported Nvidia configurations and CIG-TSR as another option in Star Citizen; those names and compatibility rules are specific to that game and should not be treated as requirements for other RPGs.

4. Change individual visual settings in small, testable steps
If the baseline still misses your target, change one visual control at a time. Apply the change, play a representative encounter, and keep it only if it improves the problem without harming legibility. Write down the original value so you can undo a change that has an unexpected side effect.

The table is a decision aid, not a universal ranking of performance cost. Hardware, game engine, driver, and scene complexity determine the actual impact of each control. Rockstar’s official Red Dead Redemption 2 guide recommends experimenting with a sequence of settings and notes that effects vary by system configuration; its sequence should not be copied as a fixed order for card games.
5. Use synchronization settings to address the symptom you actually have
When VSync can help
VSync coordinates rendered frames with the monitor’s refresh cycle. EA’s Jedi: Fallen Order guide describes its control this way: “Turn ON/OFF to synchronize the frame rate of the game with the monitor refresh rate for more stability.” That statement explains the option in EA’s implementation; it does not prove that VSync should always be enabled or disabled.

Enable it as a test when you see horizontal tearing or unstable presentation despite an otherwise adequate frame rate. If controls feel less immediate or the game develops pronounced stutter, compare the result with VSync disabled and use the mode that fits your display and input priorities. A frame-rate limit, variable-refresh display, or another synchronization method may also be available, but names and behavior differ by title and platform.
6. A repeatable settings workflow
Use this sequence whenever you install a new card-based RPG, move it to another device, or update a graphics driver.
- Open every relevant menu. Note separate Graphics, Display, Audio, Controls, Accessibility, and Gameplay pages. Do not assume an option is under Graphics.
- Fix readability. Set text, subtitle, tooltip, contrast, color, and motion options so that the smallest combat information is comfortable to read.
- Fix interaction. Configure keyboard, mouse, touch, or controller input; remap difficult actions; and test targeting and cancellation.
- Fix sound and saving. Balance volume categories, enable captions if useful, and learn whether the game permits saving or pausing during a run.
- Set the display baseline. Choose a dependable display mode, correct resolution and aspect ratio, and a sustainable frame-rate target.
- Apply a preset only if needed. Use it as a starting point, then restore any comfort settings the preset changed.
- Test supported scaling. Try dynamic resolution or upscaling only when the game documents or exposes it for your hardware.
- Isolate remaining problems. Change one visual setting, play a representative encounter, and record whether readability, smoothness, or heat/noise improved.
- Save and verify. Restart the game if required, load the same type of encounter, and confirm that the settings persisted.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom
The game is readable but not smooth
Confirm that the frame-rate target is realistic, then try a preset or supported scaling feature. If you still miss the target, test effects-heavy options such as shadows, reflections, volumetrics, and particles one at a time. Keep resolution high enough that text remains crisp; reducing a costly effect may preserve card readability better than lowering the entire image.
The game is smooth but text is blurry
Check that the display is using the intended resolution and aspect ratio. Disable an overly aggressive scaling mode, raise its quality option if offered, or return to a fixed resolution. Inspect both the card face and a tooltip, because UI layers may be rendered differently.
You see tearing
Test VSync or another synchronization control, then compare a capped frame rate with an uncapped one. Use the option that removes tearing without introducing unacceptable stutter or input delay on your setup.

You are missing clicks or controller selections
Revisit input remapping, cursor speed, focus behavior, and confirmation prompts. Check whether a touch-only or mouse-only mode changes the interaction model. A lower graphics preset will not correct an input-layout problem.
A preset changed the game’s comfort settings
Presets can alter more than rendering quality. Recheck text size, subtitles, color or contrast modes, motion reduction, volume, and control mappings after every preset change, then save a personal configuration if the game supports profiles.
8. What cannot be standardized across card-based RPGs
No single frame-rate number, resolution, preset, or VSync state is established here as the correct choice for every card RPG. The cited graphics guides cover Jedi: Fallen Order, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Star Citizen, while the relevant accessibility example comes from the Slay the Spire Steam listing. They demonstrate possible controls and sensible testing principles, not cross-game benchmarks.

There is no cited benchmark that supplies a universal performance gain for these settings. Treat any number offered without a measured source for your exact title and hardware with caution.
9. The practical priority order
When you need a short checklist, use this order: comfort and accessibility; input and audio; display mode and resolution; sustainable frame-rate target; preset or supported scaling; one-at-a-time visual adjustments; and synchronization settings for tearing or presentation stability. Stop as soon as the game is readable, controllable, and stable. More graphical detail is worthwhile only after those three conditions are met.
