The app behind “I can’t stop writing in this gorgeous open-source notes app” cannot be identified from the available information. Several projects fit that description, but none is confirmed as the title’s subject. Without a name or a firsthand account, it would be misleading to claim what the app looks like, how it writes, or what it can do.
Why the app can’t be identified yet
“Open-source notes app” describes a broad category, not one product. Search results surfaced several plausible candidates, including Noteriv, ColaMD, HelixNotes, Lokus, Echo, Lychee and QOwnNotes. The results do not connect any of them to the title, so choosing one would be guesswork.
The title’s first-person wording also implies that its author has used the app and enjoys writing in it. The available information does not establish that experience. A product description or search snippet cannot substantiate a claim about how an app feels to use.
What the candidate apps say about the category
The candidates illustrate how much products can differ under the same broad label. Their descriptions mention Markdown editing, local files, offline use, linking, and other organizational features, but those details belong to individual projects—not to the unidentified app.
#1 Best Overall
- Wire binding allows pages to open completely for easy writing
- Wire ends are locked to prevent snagging on items
- Front label area helps you quickly identify your notes
- Perfect for keeping notes, shorthand writing, lists and more
- Noteriv describes an open-source Markdown note-taking app and lists a live Markdown editor, wiki links, graph view, canvas or whiteboard, and board view.
- Quillpad describes itself as an open-source notes app and a fork of Quillnote. The available result is several years old, so it does not establish the project’s current status or features.
- ColaMD describes itself as a free, open-source Markdown editor for writing and notes.
- HelixNotes describes itself as a free, open-source local Markdown notes app with daily notes and no account requirement.
- Lokus describes an open-source app using local Markdown files and a rich Markdown editor.
- Echo describes itself as a minimal open-source note-taking app whose notes are Markdown files on disk.
- Lychee describes itself as a free, open-source, local-first notes app that works offline and offers Markdown export.
- QOwnNotes describes itself as a free, open-source Markdown text-file note-taking app and positions it for long-form writing and organization.
These are self-descriptions, not a verified head-to-head comparison. They do not establish which app inspired the title or whether any candidate is the one its author had in mind.
What to verify before relying on an app description
“Open source” by itself does not tell you how an app handles your writing. Once the app is identified, check its current official materials for the details that affect your use:
Rank #2
- Stiff cover and back protect your pages for safe storage and travel
- College-ruled format keeps your writing neat and organized
- Wire-bound design allows pages to open completely for easy writing
- Perfect for homes, schools, offices and more
- Writing experience: editor behavior, formatting options, and whether the author has actually used it for the kind of writing described.
- Files and portability: where notes are stored, whether they are readable outside the app, and what export options exist.
- Platforms and sync: supported operating systems and devices, whether synchronization is available, and how it works.
- Privacy: what data leaves the device, if any, and what the project says about accounts, telemetry, and backups.
- License and availability: the current software license, maintenance status, and any costs or restrictions.
Those details are specific to each project and can change. The available candidate descriptions are not enough to settle them for the unidentified app.

A product name, a link to the app, or a screenshot that identifies it would make it possible to check the project’s current documentation. To support the personal recommendation implied by “I can’t stop writing,” the author would also need firsthand experience and a clear account of what makes writing in that app enjoyable.
