The Gemini controls with the biggest effect are model selection and thinking level. Flash-Lite is aimed at speed, Flash balances speed with reasoning, and Pro is intended for demanding reasoning, mathematics, and coding. Auto model selection gives Google control of both model and thinking level. Personalization features—memory, response instructions, and connected apps—change what context Gemini uses and how it writes. Keep Activity, temporary chats, and auto-delete settings govern history, retention, and some model-improvement uses, but none is a no-processing switch: Google still processes chats to answer, protect its services, and in some cases uses human reviewers.
Labels and availability vary by account, plan, feature rollout, and region. Treat the paths below as the current Gemini Apps pattern, then verify the controls shown in your own account.
Which settings change answer quality and response time?
Quality is not controlled by one universal “best” switch. The task, the model’s reasoning capability, the thinking level, and the context Gemini receives all matter. More capability can mean a slower response and greater use of your allowance.

Model selection

Some advanced models require a Google AI plan, and eligibility is account-dependent. Google also says advanced models use more of a user’s allowance; check the allowance indicator and plan details in Gemini before relying on a model for a long session.

Thinking level
Where the selector is available, Gemini offers Low, Medium, or High thinking. If you do not choose a level, Google documents Low as the default. A higher level gives the model more room for internal reasoning, but it is not a guarantee of a correct or better answer. It can increase latency and allowance use, and a high setting may be unnecessary for a rewrite, short summary, translation, or simple list.
For a difficult proof, a debugging investigation, or a plan with many constraints, try Medium or High and ask Gemini to show assumptions and verify its result. For rapid drafting or repeated short questions, Low usually keeps the interaction responsive. If Auto is selected, Gemini chooses the model and thinking level together, so you give up that manual trade-off in exchange for convenience.

How personalization affects the response
Memory from past chats
Memory can use information from previous conversations to personalize later answers. Google’s documented memory feature requires a personal account and Keep Activity to have been on for the past chats used by the feature; work, school, supervised, or otherwise ineligible accounts may not see the same control. You can turn memory off and delete relevant past chats. Deleting a remembered conversation is different from merely asking Gemini to forget something in a new prompt.

Response instructions
Response instructions are durable preferences such as “put a short summary first,” “use bullet points for long answers,” or a preferred level of technical detail. They affect style and format more reliably than a one-off prompt, but Google does not describe them as perfect topic filters. If Gemini keeps mentioning a subject, Google advises deleting chats about that subject rather than relying only on an instruction.
The documented experience is unavailable to work, school, and supervised accounts, and it is not available in some features, including Gems. The control therefore may be absent even when the rest of personalization is enabled.

Connected Google apps and Personal Intelligence
Connected apps can supply additional context for personalization. Turning Personal Intelligence off for a particular chat limits that chat’s personalization; it does not by itself stop the chat from being saved to Gemini Apps Activity. Those are separate decisions. Use a temporary chat when the goal is to chat without saving activity to the Google Account in the manner Google describes.

Privacy controls change history, retention, and some uses of data, not the basic processing required to produce a response. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says: “Even if your Keep Activity setting is off or you use temporary chats, Google still uses your chats to respond to you and help protect Google, our users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers.” Do not paste passwords, private keys, confidential client material, medical records, or anything else you would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve services.

Keep Activity on
With Keep Activity on, you can review and delete Gemini Apps activity and set automatic deletion. Google lists 18 months as the default auto-delete period, with choices of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite. Deleting Gemini activity does not delete information already saved in other Google services, each of which can have its own retention controls.
Keep Activity off
Google says chats made while Keep Activity is off are retained with the account for 72 hours. They can use the last 24 hours of chat as context for responding and are retained for safety and service-protection purposes. If you do not submit feedback, Google says future chats made with Keep Activity off are not used to improve its AI models. Submitting feedback changes the data Google says it collects and uses, so do not treat the off setting as an unconditional model-training exclusion.
Temporary chats
Google states: “Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models.” The same Privacy Hub says temporary chats are retained for 72 hours and can use the last 24 hours of chat as context. They remain subject to processing for responses and safety, including possible human review. “Temporary” therefore describes account history and training treatment, not an instant deletion or zero-access mode.

Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data can be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when you delete Gemini activity. That exception is why deleting a visible conversation should not be treated as proof that every copy has disappeared.

- Open the model selector. In Gemini, start a chat and open the model menu. Select Flash-Lite for a speed-first task, Flash for general work, or Pro when the problem genuinely needs advanced reasoning. If the selector offers Auto, use it when you prefer automatic routing over manual choice.
- Set thinking level when offered. Choose Low for short, routine requests; Medium for work with several constraints; and High for especially demanding analysis. Confirm the displayed allowance and any warning before sending a large prompt.
- Decide whether personalization is useful. Review memory, response instructions, and connected-app access before a project involving personal, workplace, or client context. Disable or remove the relevant source when carrying context into the conversation would be a liability.
- Choose the activity mode before typing sensitive content. Use Keep Activity settings or start a temporary chat first. Changing a personalization toggle for an existing chat is not the same as preventing activity from being saved.
- Set deletion timing. If Keep Activity remains on, open Gemini Apps Activity controls and select 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or indefinite according to your retention needs. Remember that other Google services and human-review records follow separate rules.
- Check the result, not just the setting. A higher model or thinking level can still be wrong. Ask for assumptions, calculations, citations where appropriate, and a concise uncertainty statement when the decision is important.
Practical combinations

Common misunderstandings and fixes
- “Pro always gives a better answer.” Pro is positioned for more complex reasoning, not as a universal quality guarantee. Improve the prompt, provide constraints, and verify the output.
- “High thinking means no mistakes.” Thinking level changes the available reasoning effort and can increase time and allowance use; it cannot guarantee factual accuracy.
- “Auto always picks the strongest model.” Auto is designed to pick an efficient route for the prompt, not necessarily the most capable model every time.
- “Turning off Personal Intelligence stops saving.” It affects personalization for a chat. Activity saving is controlled separately; use a temporary chat for the documented no-normal-history option.
- “Keep Activity off means Google cannot process the chat.” Google still processes chats to answer and protect its services, and the chats are retained for 72 hours.
- “Deleting activity removes every copy.” Google says human-reviewed chats and related data may remain for up to three years, and other Google services have independent retention.
- “Every account has the same controls.” Model availability, thinking levels, memory, response instructions, and connected apps depend on account type, plan, feature, and rollout. If a label is missing, consult the current in-product help rather than assuming an error.
A simple decision rule
Start with the least demanding setting that can plausibly solve the task. Move from Flash-Lite to Flash, then to Pro, only when the problem’s reasoning depth justifies extra latency or allowance use. Raise thinking from Low to Medium or High when the task has interacting constraints, not merely because an answer matters. Enable memory or connected apps only when their context is worth the privacy trade-off. For sensitive conversations, use temporary chats or Keep Activity off with the published 72-hour and safety-processing limits in mind, and never enter information that must remain outside Google’s review and service systems.
