The right router for gaming and streaming depends less on its biggest advertised speed number than on your internet plan, wired-port needs, compatible devices and coverage. The TP-Link Archer GE800 is a strong all-round gaming-focused pick; the NETGEAR Nighthawk RS300 is the more restrained Wi-Fi 7 option; and the RS700S and ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro suit buyers with specific multi-gig or high-capacity needs. The ASUS GT-BN98 Pro is a forward-looking Wi-Fi 8 choice, but its benefits could not be fully tested with native Wi-Fi 8 clients in the cited review.
This is a criteria-based shortlist, not a standardized head-to-head ranking. Advertised aggregate Wi-Fi rates are not the same as measured speed for one device, and no router can promise lower game ping by itself.
How to choose a router for gaming and streaming
Start with your internet plan and wired devices
Check your plan speed, modem or ONT interface, and the WAN port on the router. Then count the wired devices you care about, such as a gaming PC, console or network storage. A 10Gbps port only helps when the internet service and connected equipment can use that speed; it does not make a slower connection faster.
Look beyond the advertised Wi-Fi rate
Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8 routers advertise combined radio capacities across bands and streams. Those figures are not a single client’s internet throughput. Independent tests at different distances can be more useful, but results vary with the home’s layout, interference, router placement and client hardware. A model that leads close to the router may not lead across a larger room or floor.

Match features to client support and household load
Wi-Fi 7 features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) require compatible client devices and suitable configuration. A newer router cannot add those capabilities to an older phone, PC or console. Quality of Service (QoS) can help manage which devices receive bandwidth, but traffic management is not a guarantee of lower latency.
NETGEAR Support says QoS on Nighthawk Pro Gaming routers can allocate bandwidth to specific devices; its documentation describes app-level QoS and congestion control for models with DumaOS 3.0. This is model-specific guidance, not a feature claim for every Nighthawk router.

Plan for coverage, not just peak performance
For a large or obstructed home, a mesh system or additional access point may be a better solution than buying a more powerful single router. Check where the router can sit, whether it has room for ventilation, and whether the signal must pass through several walls or floors. NETGEAR’s area and device figures below are its own claims, not guarantees for every home.

TP-Link Archer GE800: gaming controls and visibility
The Archer GE800 combines tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with a gaming dashboard and controls. TP-Link documents network and performance views in its app and browser dashboard. PC Gamer ranks it highly in its network testing, while noting that the router is large and that faster 6 GHz alternatives exist at much higher prices. Make sure its footprint and placement work in your home.
TP-Link’s product page advertises “4× lower latency,” but that figure comes from a vendor lab comparison: Wi-Fi 7 clients used MLO on 5 GHz and 6 GHz simultaneously, compared with Wi-Fi 6/6E routers without MLO under specified single-frequency interference conditions. It is not a general promise of lower ping in ordinary homes.

- WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
- Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
- Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro: quad-band and multi-gig wired options
ASUS’s US product page lists quad-band Wi-Fi 7, dual 6 GHz capability and two 10Gbps ports. ASUS advertises up to 30Gbps aggregate speed, a combined radio-capacity figure rather than expected internet speed for one device. TechRadar describes the GT-BE98 family as quad-band Wi-Fi 7 with multi-gig wired connectivity; confirm the exact GT-BE98 Pro configuration for your region rather than assuming every GT-BE98 variant has identical specifications.

NETGEAR’s 2026 Wi-Fi 7 guide positions the RS700S as its maximum-performance router. The company lists up to 19Gbps aggregate Wi-Fi speed, coverage up to 3,500 square feet and support for up to 200 devices. It also lists one 10Gbps internet port, one 10Gbps LAN port and four 1Gbps LAN ports. These are manufacturer claims; the usable coverage and performance depend on the home, service and client devices.

NETGEAR Nighthawk RS300: a more measured Wi-Fi 7 configuration
NETGEAR’s 2026 guide describes the RS300 as a value-oriented tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router. NETGEAR claims up to 9.3Gbps aggregate Wi-Fi speed, coverage up to 2,500 square feet and support for up to 100 devices. Its one 2.5Gbps internet port, two 2.5Gbps LAN ports and two 1Gbps LAN ports may suit a 1–2Gbps plan with wired connections for a PC and console, provided the ISP service and local network equipment can take advantage of those speeds.
ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro: a Wi-Fi 8 early-adopter option
Tom’s Guide measured about 2.30Gbps at 15 feet and 950.6Mbps at 50 feet in its test setup and reported strong wired throughput. Those are outlet-specific measurements, not expected speeds in every home. The same review says native Wi-Fi 8 client hardware had not arrived at testing time, so it could not fully evaluate the router’s Wi-Fi 8 advantages with compatible clients. Check local availability and price before treating it as a practical buy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one fits your setup?
- For gaming controls and an app dashboard: Consider the Archer GE800 if its size is manageable and you value its gaming-focused controls.
- For multi-gig wired connections: Compare the GT-BE98 Pro’s two 10Gbps ports with the RS700S’s 10Gbps WAN and LAN ports. Choose based on your service, wired equipment and exact regional model.
- For a Wi-Fi 7 household without a need for 10Gbps ports: The RS300’s stated port mix may cover a PC and console while providing additional multi-gig capacity.
- For a large home or many connected devices: Treat NETGEAR’s claimed coverage and device counts as starting points, not guarantees; consider mesh or extra access points if the layout is challenging.
- For early access to Wi-Fi 8: The GT-BN98 Pro is a forward-looking option, but the cited review could not test its Wi-Fi 8 benefits with native clients.
Will a gaming router improve ping?
Not automatically. Latency is affected by the game server, ISP connection, client device, wireless signal quality and local network traffic. A router can help organize household traffic, particularly when several devices compete for bandwidth, but a higher advertised Wi-Fi rate alone does not guarantee a quicker game response. If possible, wire a gaming PC or console to the router and address weak coverage or congestion before paying for a higher aggregate speed rating.
