For distinct kinds of enemy variety, start with DOOM Eternal, Hollow Knight, and Monster Hunter: World. The first makes enemies shape combat decisions, the second ties unusual creatures to exploration, and the third gives monsters distinctive behaviors within a living ecosystem. The best fit depends on whether you want tactical shooter encounters, discoveries while exploring, or creature-focused hunts.
What makes enemy variety feel meaningful?
A large roster is not automatically a varied one. Enemies feel distinct when they make you change how you fight, move, manage resources, or time an attack. Their roles in an encounter matter, as does when and where the game introduces them: new threats can keep later stages fresh, while creatures linked to particular places can make exploration more rewarding.

- Mechanical distinction: Does an enemy call for a different weapon, position, resource, or timing?
- Behavior and encounter role: Does it act differently, or combine with other enemies to create new decisions?
- Pacing: Does the game continue introducing meaningful threats, or do encounters begin to feel interchangeable?
- World connection: Do creatures belong to particular areas, ecosystems, or discoveries?
These are useful ways to compare games, not a formal scoring system. The three recommendations below emphasize different strengths.
Which games are good choices for enemy variety?
DOOM Eternal: enemies that change how you fight
DOOM Eternal is a strong choice if you want enemies to function as tactical problems rather than interchangeable targets. The variety is about how opponents and mechanics shape combat and its pace, not simply how many demon types appear.

In a PlayStation.Blog interview, executive producer Marty Stratton explained that the team’s design decisions responded to repetition and limited visual variation in the previous game. He said the team continued introducing new enemies and mechanics into later stages: “We’re always introducing something new, even in the game’s later stages: new enemies, new mechanics, new visuals.” Bethesda’s January 31, 2020 feature also looks at how id Software designed familiar adversaries and developed new ones.
Hollow Knight: unusual creatures as discoveries
Hollow Knight suits players who enjoy finding different creatures as they explore. Its enemy variety is connected to the world: discovering an unfamiliar room can bring an encounter that does not feel like a repeat of the last one.
Team Cherry’s official site describes areas that contain new creatures and identifies William Pellen as the designer responsible for enemies, bosses, and game behavior. In a PC Gamer interview, co-director Ari Gibson described the aim of making exploration rewarding even when players were not progressing the story: “We tried to have a really diverse range of enemies, so even when you’re just kind of seeing the world and not making a lot of story progress, you stumble across a room you missed last time, and it’s got a weird, fat enemy that doesn’t exist anywhere else, something like that.”

Monster Hunter: World: monsters with distinct traits
Choose Monster Hunter: World if you want large creatures to be the focus and prefer encounters built around learning what each one does. Here, variety comes from monsters with their own characteristic traits and attack styles, as well as the sense that they are part of an ecosystem rather than merely obstacles.
Capcom’s developer interview discusses the series’ concept of monsters as ecosystem participants and the effort to create a dense, seamless living environment in Monster Hunter: World. In a report on a GDC presentation, Game Developer quoted game director Yuya Tokuda: “With each creature, we also wanted to have a very unique sort of characteristic that stood out and made them unique.”

No comparable authoritative enemy-count figures are established for these games, so a numerical ranking would not tell you which roster feels most varied. Choose by the kind of decision you want enemies to create: tactical adaptation, exploration-driven discovery, or learning distinctive monster behavior.
