There is no single answer: players in one Reddit r/gaming discussion named games including Control, Baldur’s Gate 3, The Witcher 3, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man’s Sky. Their stories point to different reasons a game can grow on someone, not a consensus about what everyone should play.
Which games did players change their minds about?
The October 3, 2026, discussion is an open-ended collection of personal stories, not a poll or a ranking. Alongside the games above, commenters mentioned other titles and described very different experiences. One person’s late-blooming favorite may remain a poor fit for someone else.

The thread’s examples are useful less as recommendations than as reminders that an early impression is not always a final one. A game’s opening hours, mechanics, timing, or social context can shape how it feels.
What made a game click later?
Coming back after a break
Some players stopped, returned later, and found they were more willing to continue. A commenter describing Control said they started and stopped several times before playing for longer. A pause can change a player’s mood or expectations, though it does not guarantee the game will feel different.

Getting past an awkward start or learning the systems
Several stories involve a slow opening or a mechanic that initially put someone off. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, commenters singled out weapon durability as an early frustration. A player discussing Baldur’s Gate 3 said they had expected not to enjoy turn-based games, then accumulated extensive play time. The anecdotes suggest that familiarity can change the experience; they do not establish that every player should persist through a disliked mechanic.
Trying a game after changes
Commenters described returning to No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 after their launch periods or later changes. Their accounts reflect individual experiences at different times, not a guarantee about a particular current version, platform, or edition.

Playing with friends
Joining friends was another way a game became appealing. Shared play can make a title more enjoyable for someone who values the social experience, but it is a personal preference rather than a universal fix.
Should you keep playing a game you dislike?
Not necessarily. One commenter suggested giving Control two to three hours, but that is personal advice, not a tested threshold or a rule that applies to every game. The thread also includes people who continued to dislike popular titles after trying them more than once.

If you are undecided, consider what is bothering you: the opening pace, a particular system, the genre, or the circumstances in which you are playing. A short break or a different way of engaging may be worth trying if you are curious. If the experience still feels like a chore, stopping is a reasonable outcome.

The thread offers examples of changed opinions, not evidence about how often players change their minds or which game is most likely to win someone over. Commenters’ play-time claims and votes describe that discussion or individual accounts; they are not population statistics. Since the stories are personal and the thread can change, treat them as conversation starters rather than a definitive guide.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
