For most trips, use Settings > Battery > Power saving when your charge is tight, keep Bluetooth enabled while the paired phone is nearby, and use Wi‑Fi or LTE only when you actually need a connection away from that phone. On an LTE model, international service is not automatic: your carrier, watch plan, destination network and software configuration all determine whether roaming works.
The exact switches and their effects vary by Galaxy Watch generation, software version, region and carrier. Treat the paths below as a practical guide, then read the confirmation screen on your own watch before accepting a change.
Set up the watch before you leave
Make the connectivity decision before your battery is low or you are standing in an airport. Confirm the watch model, software version and whether it is Bluetooth-only or LTE. An LTE watch can still use Bluetooth with a phone; LTE simply adds the possibility of independent mobile service when an activated plan and compatible network are available.

- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Review Power saving and the list of functions it will change on that model.
Samsung uses the same general path across many models, but the resulting list is not identical. Newer guidance describes reductions to brightness, screen timeout, processor performance, background network activity, location services and syncing. It can also turn off Always-On Display, Wi‑Fi and wake-up gestures. Older watches may present fewer or differently named controls.

Confirm how the watch is connected
Open Settings > Connections and inspect Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi and, on an LTE watch, Mobile networks. This tells you whether the watch is currently relying on the phone, a saved Wi‑Fi network or cellular service. It also prevents a common mistake: disabling a radio without realizing that a feature depends on it.
Choose the connection mode that fits the trip
There is no single “travel” setting. Select the least power-hungry connection that still provides the function you need.
| Mode | Use it when | Battery and availability trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth to paired phone | The phone is nearby and you need ordinary notifications, calls or phone-linked features. | Samsung says Wi‑Fi may pause while Bluetooth is connected, reducing radio use. Turning Bluetooth off disconnects the watch from the phone. |
| Wi‑Fi | The phone is out of Bluetooth range and the watch needs network access through a known Wi‑Fi network. | An available network and, usually, its password are required. Wi‑Fi may be disabled automatically while Bluetooth is carrying the connection. |
| LTE/mobile network | An LTE watch must make calls or use data without the phone, and the activated plan supports service at that location. | Mobile service consumes power and depends on the carrier, plan, watch variant and destination. Roaming cannot be assumed. |
Think of the choice in four questions: How far are you from the phone? Do you need independent network access? Does the LTE plan support the destination? Is preserving charge more important than continuous sensors, syncing or notifications?
Use Power saving for the broadest battery reduction
Power saving is the main switch to try when you have a long day, limited access to a charger or unusually high drain. Go to Settings > Battery > Power saving and read the on-screen effects before turning it on.

What it can change
Depending on the watch, Power saving can dim the display, shorten screen-on time, limit processor performance, reduce background network activity, restrict location services and syncing, and disable Always-On Display or wake-up gestures. Some models also turn off Wi‑Fi. These changes lower convenience as well as power use: background updates may be delayed, the screen may not wake in the way you expect, and location-dependent features can be limited.
When to leave it off
Do not enable it blindly before a workout that depends on continuous location or health measurements, or before a period when you need every notification immediately. Instead, use the narrower controls below. Samsung’s guidance does not provide a universal number of hours saved, so any improvement depends on model, battery condition, signal strength, screen use and enabled features.
Reduce drain without cutting every connection
Turn off Always-On Display
If you want notifications and normal interaction but can live without a continuously visible clock, disable Always-On Display in the display settings. The screen no longer remains partially lit between interactions, while Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi or LTE can remain available.
Reduce unnecessary screen activations and notifications
Disable notifications for apps that do not need to reach your wrist and avoid settings that wake the display for every alert. This is especially useful in transit, where repeated screen activations can consume more charge than occasional deliberate checks.

Limit health features only when the trade-off is acceptable
On Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, Samsung describes a Limit health features option. When enabled, it disables workout auto-detection, heart-rate alerts and background monitoring, movement and respiration tracking during sleep, and sleep-score calculation. Use it only if losing those records and alerts is acceptable; it is not a general-purpose travel equivalent to Power saving.
Keep Bluetooth for a nearby phone
When the paired phone is in your bag or pocket, leave Bluetooth on. Samsung says the watch may stop using Wi‑Fi while Bluetooth is connected, then resume Wi‑Fi when Bluetooth is lost, an app needs Wi‑Fi, the watch is charging or a software update is downloaded. That automatic behavior lets the watch use the short-range phone link instead of maintaining a second network connection.
If you switch Bluetooth off, the watch is disconnected from the phone. Calls, phone-linked notifications and other paired functions may stop until Bluetooth is enabled and the devices reconnect. If the watch seems offline after a flight or a crowded event, check Bluetooth before changing other radios.
Use Wi‑Fi when the phone is out of range
To connect manually, open Settings > Connections > Wi‑Fi, select an available network and enter its password if prompted. Saved Wi‑Fi profiles may synchronize from a Galaxy phone on supported models, but that availability varies, and enterprise or captive-portal networks may not work as they do on a phone.

Wi‑Fi is useful for remote connectivity when Bluetooth is unavailable, but it is not a replacement for LTE. The watch still needs a usable network, and a hotel sign-in page or other authentication requirement can prevent the connection. If the phone is nearby, allowing Bluetooth to carry the link generally avoids leaving Wi‑Fi active unnecessarily.
Configure LTE and evaluate international roaming
On an LTE watch, open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks. Depending on the model and activated service, you may see Mobile networks, Mobile data, Data roaming, Network operators and Access Point Name settings. The Galaxy Wearable app can also show a Mobile plans area for LTE models with active service.
Before crossing a border
- Ask the carrier whether the specific watch model and plan support service in the destination country or territory.
- Ask whether watch lines roam independently, require the paired phone to roam, or need a separate international option.
- Confirm the destination network and any data, call or text charges before enabling Data roaming.
- Check that the carrier’s required network and Access Point Name settings are applied; do not invent values from a phone’s configuration.
Samsung’s support guidance directs customers to their carrier for network support and settings. That is important because a “Data roaming” switch only exposes a capability; it does not prove that the plan includes international service, that the destination has a compatible network, or that use will be free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat happens when you disable mobile networks
Turning off mobile networks disconnects the watch from carrier service, so independent LTE calls and data will not work. Samsung says this does not cancel the subscription. Use the switch when you want to prevent cellular use temporarily, but leave mobile service available if the watch must remain reachable without the phone and the carrier has confirmed coverage.

Exercise settings can change both battery and safety-related functions
Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra include an Exercise power saving option. Samsung says that on Ultra it lowers GPS and heart-rate recording accuracy and blocks network connections, calls and messages during exercise. That can extend a workout session’s charge, but it is unsuitable for a route where navigation, communication or higher-fidelity tracking matters.
Choose this mode only after checking the warning on the watch and deciding that reduced location and heart-rate precision is acceptable. For a hike in unfamiliar terrain or a workout during which someone may need to reach you, ordinary tracking and connectivity are the safer priorities.
Plan a charging fallback
Carry the charger or cable that matches your watch and allow time to charge before the longest travel day. Samsung documents Wireless Power Sharing from some Galaxy phones, but support varies by phone and watch model. Verify compatibility before relying on a phone as the only backup; a phone that supports wireless charging for another device may not support every watch generation or alignment requirement.
Do not treat a one-time top-up as proof that a particular travel setup will last a stated number of hours. Runtime depends on radio signal, screen use, sensors, software, battery age and temperature, and the available guidance does not establish a universal savings figure.
Flight and transit considerations
The available Samsung guidance does not establish universal airline or regulatory rules for Galaxy Watch radios. If crew members or an airline instruct you to disable wireless connections, follow those current instructions. Do not assume that one airplane’s policy applies to every route or carrier.
For a radio-free period, you can turn off Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi and mobile networks as appropriate, understanding that each change removes a corresponding connection. Re-enable the needed radio after landing and allow time for the watch to reconnect before relying on notifications or independent service.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a watch that will not stay connected
The phone is nearby, but the watch shows disconnected
- Check that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app and confirm the watch is selected and paired.
- Check whether Power saving has disabled a connection or background activity.
- Move the devices closer and allow a short interval for reconnection before changing Wi‑Fi or LTE settings.
Wi‑Fi does not connect away from the phone
- Open Settings > Connections > Wi‑Fi and verify that Wi‑Fi is enabled.
- Re-enter the network password and check whether the network requires a browser-based sign-in.
- Try a different known network; enterprise authentication and captive portals may not be supported.
LTE roaming does not work
- Confirm that the watch is an LTE variant with active service, not a Bluetooth-only model.
- Review Settings > Connections > Mobile networks, including Mobile data and Data roaming.
- Contact the carrier to verify the destination, roaming authorization, network compatibility and required settings.
- Until those details are confirmed, use Bluetooth with the phone or a trusted Wi‑Fi network rather than assuming cellular service will appear.
A practical travel checklist
- Charge the watch fully and pack a compatible charger or verified Wireless Power Sharing backup.
- Pair and test the watch with the phone before departure.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled for normal nearby-phone use.
- Use Power saving when conserving charge is the priority, after reviewing which functions it disables.
- Turn off Always-On Display and unnecessary notifications if you need a lighter battery intervention.
- Save and test a suitable Wi‑Fi network if the phone will be out of range.
- For LTE, confirm destination and roaming support with the carrier before enabling Data roaming.
- Do not use Exercise power saving when GPS accuracy or calls and messages are critical.
- Follow the airline or crew’s current instructions for wireless radios.
