There is no single best free and open-source visual automation tool for every job. For API-connected business workflows, consider n8n—but check its Sustainable Use License (SUL) before using it in a customer-facing product or service. For a flow-based tool with a permissive core license, consider Node-RED and review the terms of any third-party nodes you install. Data-pipeline orchestration is a different use case, with tools such as Apache Airflow or Kestra potentially a better fit.
Start with the kind of workflow you need
“Visual automation” can mean connecting business apps, reacting to events or devices, or scheduling and coordinating data pipelines. Those jobs have different trigger models and operational needs, so choose based on the workflow—not a generic ranking.
- App-to-app workflows: Choose a tool that supports the APIs and actions your process needs, and check whether it lets you add code or custom components when built-in steps fall short.
- Event- or device-driven flows: A flow-based environment such as Node-RED may suit work organized around events and connected systems. Confirm that the nodes you need exist and that their licenses work for your use.
- Data pipelines: Apache Airflow and Kestra are adjacent orchestration options. The n8n team’s July 2026 comparison describes Airflow as oriented to scheduled data pipelines rather than general business automation; evaluate these tools against your pipeline requirements rather than treating them as direct substitutes for every app workflow.
How the main options differ
The available evidence supports a shortlist and decision criteria, not an independent, hands-on ranking. The deployment and competitor descriptions below for Activepieces, Windmill, Airflow, and Kestra come from an n8n-authored comparison dated July 2026; verify them against each project’s current documentation.
| Tool | Potential fit | License information in the cited sources | Deployment information in the cited sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| n8n | API-connected workflows, data manipulation, and custom-node flexibility | Its free self-hosted Community edition uses the Sustainable Use License (SUL), which has restrictions relevant to customer-configurable workflows and hosted services. | Official docs list npm, Docker, self-hosting, and cloud options. |
| Node-RED | Flow-based automation where its available nodes match the task | Node-RED’s core project is Apache 2.0. Third-party nodes may have different licenses. | Not stated in the cited license source. |
| Activepieces | A visual builder to investigate for app workflows | The n8n-authored July 2026 comparison identifies it as MIT; confirm the current upstream project license. | The comparison describes self-hosted and cloud deployment; confirm current options with the project. |
| Windmill | An adjacent option to assess against the workload and license needs | The n8n-authored July 2026 comparison identifies it as AGPLv3; confirm the current upstream project license. | Not stated in the cited comparison excerpt. |
| Apache Airflow | Scheduled data-pipeline orchestration, rather than a default choice for general business automation | The n8n-authored July 2026 comparison identifies it as Apache 2.0; confirm the current project license. | Not stated in the cited comparison excerpt. |
| Kestra | An adjacent orchestration option to assess against the workflow | The n8n-authored July 2026 comparison identifies it as Apache 2.0; confirm the current project license. | Not stated in the cited comparison excerpt. |
These license and deployment details are starting points, not a substitute for checking current project terms, editions, and feature matrices. In particular, “free” does not mean every feature is free, and software described as open source may still impose conditions on commercial use, redistribution, or hosting.

When n8n is a good candidate—and when to pause
n8n’s documentation describes a tool for connecting applications through APIs and manipulating data with little or no code. It also lists npm, Docker, self-hosting, and cloud options. Those characteristics make it worth evaluating when you need flexible API-connected flows or want to extend the workflow with custom nodes. Read the n8n documentation.
Before adopting the free self-hosted Community edition for a commercial project, read the n8n license FAQ. The FAQ says an organization can build and run workflows for clients if those clients cannot access the editor or change workflow logic. It says a commercial license is needed when external users can build or configure workflows, when n8n is hosted as a service, or when it is white-labeled. The exact fit depends on how your product and users interact with the software; do not assume that self-hosting alone settles the question.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
When Node-RED is a good candidate
Node-RED’s project documentation states that the core project is licensed under Apache 2.0. That can make it a candidate when its flow-based model fits the task and a permissive core license matters. The same page cautions that third-party nodes may have different terms, so check the license for each installed node rather than assuming the core license covers the whole deployment. See Node-RED’s licensing FAQ.

- Extensibility: Determine whether built-in steps are enough or whether you need custom nodes, scripts, or direct API calls.
- Governance: Verify the exact edition’s role access, single sign-on (SSO), secrets handling, and audit logging. These capabilities can differ by product and paid tier.
- Maintenance and support: Account for upgrades, backups, monitoring, incident response, and the support terms available for your chosen edition.
- License and distribution: If customers will use or configure workflows, or you plan to resell, white-label, or host the software for others, review the license terms for the exact edition and use case before building around it.
The n8n-authored July 2026 comparison discusses differences in governance and paid-tier features, but those competitor claims are vendor-authored. Check each project’s current official feature matrix and license for a decision that depends on a specific capability.

A practical selection sequence
- Write down one representative workflow. List its trigger, inputs, steps, destinations, failure paths, and who needs to edit it.
- Check the workflow model and integrations. Confirm that the candidate supports the needed systems and can handle any step that requires custom code.
- Choose the deployment model. Compare local, self-hosted, and hosted options, then account for the operational work required for the option you choose.
- Review license and edition boundaries. Read the current terms for the exact edition and determine whether your use involves customer access, hosted service, redistribution, or white-labeling.
- Validate governance and operations. Check access controls, secrets, audit needs, backups, upgrades, and support against your requirements before moving a critical workflow into production.
