If you like Terminator: Resistance for its Future War setting, first-person shooting, machine enemies, or solo story, the closest free Steam match supported by the available game-specific details is Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop—but it is a top-down co-op shooter, not a Terminator-style campaign. Steam’s catalog also identifies Warframe, Once Human, and Apex Legends as free-to-play, but that catalog listing alone does not establish how closely they match Terminator. The fifth slot is best treated as a search lead, not a verified recommendation.

What “like Terminator” means here

Steam describes Terminator: Resistance as a first-person shooter set during the “Future War” scenario glimpsed in The Terminator and T2: Judgment Day. Its distinct appeals include first-person combat, a post-apocalyptic world, a war against machines, and a single-player story. A free game may share one of those qualities without matching the rest. Steam’s Terminator: Resistance page is the reference point.

Only one recommendation below has game-specific details in the sources available here. The remaining titles are leads from Steam’s free-to-play catalog, not confirmed Terminator-like substitutes. Check their individual Steam pages for current price, features, and fit before downloading.

The free Steam pick with verified details

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop — best for squad combat against sci-fi enemies

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is marked free to play on Steam. It is a tactical, top-down shooter built around cooperative squad action for up to eight players, with co-op campaigns and PvP modes. It also supports solo play with bots on official maps. Its sci-fi combat against non-human enemies gives it an adjacent action appeal, but it is not a close match for Terminator: Resistance: the camera is top-down, the enemies are not presented as Skynet’s machines, and squad tactics take priority over a solo first-person story. See the Steam store page for its listing and details.

Four free-to-play catalog leads to investigate

Steam’s catalog result lists the following titles as free-to-play. The catalog excerpt does not provide enough game-specific information to responsibly claim a particular Terminator overlap for any of them, so use these as starting points rather than assured recommendations.

  • Warframe — listed as free-to-play in the Steam catalog. Confirm its current store-page details and whether its perspective, combat, story, or setting is what you want from a Terminator-adjacent game.
  • Once Human — listed as free-to-play in the Steam catalog. Check its individual listing for current availability and the mechanics or atmosphere relevant to your preferences.
  • Apex Legends — listed as free-to-play in the Steam catalog. Its inclusion here confirms catalog status only, not a match for Terminator’s setting or single-player story.
  • One more title? Treat it as unverified. The available Steam catalog excerpt does not establish a fifth specific candidate with enough detail to recommend it. Search Steam’s free-to-play listings, then verify a candidate’s individual store page rather than assuming a community suggestion or search result is free.

The catalog snapshot is available at Steam’s catalog page; listings and availability can change, so the individual game page is the better check before installing.

How to check whether a Steam game is actually free

  1. Open the game’s own Steam store page and check whether it is marked “Free To Play” or displays a price. A catalog appearance by itself is not enough to establish the current price for a particular listing.
  2. Check the page for the game’s perspective, modes, setting, and single-player or multiplayer emphasis. Compare those details with the part of Terminator: Resistance you care about rather than relying on the word “similar.”
  3. Review the game’s purchase and in-game content information. Steam explains that free-to-play games can still offer optional paid content, including purchases using Steam Wallet funds where supported. Its free-to-play games support page explains the distinction.

Why community suggestions are not proof of a free game

A Steam discussion about games similar to Terminator: Resistance mentions Alien: Isolation and Chernobylite. That makes them community suggestions, not verified free Steam games. The discussion does not establish their current price or availability, so it cannot fill a free-game recommendation slot without checking each game’s own store page. See the Steam discussion.
