Restic is the backup engine; a wrapper adds an interface or manages parts of the backup workflow. The nine projects in LinuxLinks’ June 15, 2026 roundup span desktop apps, browser-based tools, and a terminal interface, and they do different jobs. For scheduled browser-based management, start by investigating Backrest or Zerobyte. For browsing and restoring existing snapshots, Restic Browser is the more narrowly focused choice. There is no universal winner: check each project’s current maintenance, platform support, and repository compatibility before relying on it.
What a Restic wrapper adds
Restic handles encrypted backups to local or remote storage. Its official site lists Linux, BSD, macOS, and Windows support, and says the engine transfers changed parts of files rather than retransmitting entire files. The project describes Restic as free and open source: Restic.
A wrapper can make Restic easier to operate, but the label covers different workflows. Some tools help create and schedule backups; others primarily let you inspect or restore snapshots. Restic’s stable documentation is for version 0.19.1 and covers repository setup, scheduling, snapshot and file browsing, integrity checks, restoration, pruning, encryption, and scripting: Restic documentation.
Compare the nine options by interface and role
LinuxLinks’ roundup lists these nine projects. Its list is an editorial selection, not an official Restic ranking. The descriptions below reflect the roundup and the cited project information; they are not hands-on test results.

| Project | Interface or role | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Déjà Dup | Desktop GUI integrated with GNOME | A desktop-oriented option in the roundup. Check current instructions for configuring its Restic backend before choosing it for a specific platform. |
| Backrest | Browser-based UI and orchestrator | Its project description covers repository creation, snapshot browsing and restoration, scheduling, health operations, and importing existing repositories: Backrest project. |
| Zerobyte | Web management and backup automation for remote storage | Its documentation describes scheduling, retention, and multiple source protocols. The project identifies itself as version 0.x and under active development, so details may change: Zerobyte documentation. |
| Restic Browser | Simple GUI built with Tauri | Focused on browsing and restoring existing repositories; it is not described as a complete backup-management interface: Restic Browser project. |
| resticterm | Terminal UI written in C# | A terminal-based option for users comfortable working in a command-line environment; it is not a desktop or web GUI. |
| Kubackup | Web UI written in Go | A web-oriented option. Check its own current documentation for feature details and deployment requirements before comparing it with automation-focused tools. |
| Pluton | Self-hosted backup management platform | The roundup includes it as a management platform. Verify the current project documentation for licensing and any edition boundaries before adopting it. |
| Resticity | Cross-platform UI built with Wails | The community project index marks it archived. Verify availability and maintenance status before making it part of a backup plan: Awesome Restic index. |
| Restic Backup GX | Desktop GUI built with Electron and Vue 3 | A desktop option in the roundup. Verify current platform support and release status before following installation instructions. |
Choose according to the job you need done
For scheduling and browser-based management
Backrest and Zerobyte are the clearest automation-oriented examples in this group. Backrest’s documented scope includes scheduling and repository operations. Zerobyte also describes scheduling and retention, but its 0.x, active-development status makes checking the current documentation especially important.
For inspecting or restoring existing snapshots
Restic Browser is explicitly oriented toward browsing and restoring existing repositories. That narrower scope may suit someone who already has a backup process and wants a graphical way to inspect snapshots, but it should not be mistaken for an end-to-end backup manager.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For a terminal-first workflow
Consider investigating resticterm if a terminal interface suits the way you work. Its listing identifies it as a C# terminal UI, not a web or desktop application.

For desktop or self-hosted use
Déjà Dup and Restic Backup GX are desktop choices in the roundup; Pluton is described as self-hosted, while Kubackup is web-oriented. Those descriptions alone do not establish current operating-system support, deployment steps, or feature parity. Check each project’s own documentation and releases for the specific platform or server you plan to use.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Check compatibility and project health before relying on one
- Interface: Decide whether you want a browser UI, desktop GUI, or terminal UI.
- Workflow coverage: Confirm whether the tool creates and schedules backups, or mainly browses and restores snapshots.
- Deployment and platform: Check supported operating systems, installation method, and whether the software must run locally or on a self-hosted server or NAS.
- Existing repositories: Look for explicit support for importing or opening a repository you already use. Backrest’s project description specifically documents importing existing repositories.
- CLI access: Consider whether you can still use Restic’s command-line interface for maintenance or recovery if the wrapper is unavailable.
- Maintenance signals: Review release activity and project notices. The community-maintained Awesome Restic index groups apps, wrappers, mobile projects, and other integrations, and separates archived or inactive projects. Its activity markers are recency signals, not security audits or support guarantees.
The index is useful for discovery, but activity alone cannot establish software safety, quality, or suitability. Treat project status as one part of due diligence, not a substitute for testing your own restore process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the storage destination in view
A wrapper is only one part of a backup plan. Restic supports local-directory repositories and remote backends including SFTP, a REST server, Amazon S3 and compatible storage, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, and services available through rclone. The official backend documentation lists the supported options: Restic repository backends.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
A local directory can be on an external hard drive if that suits your setup; Restic does not require a particular physical drive or a wrapper to use local storage. Whichever destination you choose, make sure you understand how the tool accesses it and how you will restore data if the wrapper is unavailable.
