There isn’t one verified free, open-source app that replaces Claude, ChatGPT, NotebookLM, and Perplexity feature for feature. A practical alternative is to combine tools by job: Ollama to run a model locally, AnythingLLM to ask questions about documents, and LibreChat for a self-hosted chat interface that can work with multiple providers. You’ll need to choose models and configure the setup, and the result should not be assumed to match every feature of the hosted services.

Which tool fits each job?

These projects address different parts of an AI workflow; they are not interchangeable all-in-one replacements. Open WebUI’s guide to open-source AI alternatives describes their roles and licenses.

Tool Best fit Deployment License listed by Open WebUI What to expect
Ollama Running models locally Local model runner MIT A model-running component, not a complete hosted-assistant equivalent.
AnythingLLM Questions and answers over documents Workspace for document Q&A MIT A candidate for a document-library workflow; this does not establish parity with NotebookLM.
LibreChat Chat across model providers Self-hosted interface MIT A common chat front end; hosting and model or provider choices remain part of the setup.

The same guide also lists Open WebUI and llama.cpp as open-source local-AI options. It labels LM Studio “Proprietary (free),” illustrating that a zero price does not by itself mean software is open source.

Choosing a NotebookLM alternative for documents

If your main task is asking questions about a collection of documents, AnythingLLM is the most directly aligned option among these three. Open WebUI describes it as “A focused, practical document Q&A workspace.” That makes it a candidate to investigate for a source-library workflow—not evidence that it reproduces NotebookLM’s features. The available product information does not establish a direct feature-by-feature comparison.

Choosing a local alternative for general AI chat

Ollama is for running models locally. It is not, by itself, evidence of a complete conversational assistant with all the capabilities of a hosted service. A local setup involves selecting a model as well as a way to interact with it. LibreChat offers a different approach: a self-hosted chat interface for working across providers, so the hosting and model or provider decisions still matter.

Local inference also makes your computer part of the decision. The project guide establishes that local model runners are available, but it does not provide model-specific CPU, memory, graphics, or storage requirements. Don’t assume a particular machine will be sufficient without checking the requirements for the specific model you plan to run.

What “free” and “open source” mean here

Check the software license separately from the price. The Open WebUI guide lists Ollama, AnythingLLM, and LibreChat as MIT-licensed, while describing LM Studio as free but proprietary. Free access alone does not grant the rights associated with an open-source license.

Also distinguish software cost from the cost or conditions of using a model or provider. A self-hosted interface does not make every connected model free, and running models locally involves a different setup from using a hosted assistant.

How these options compare with hosted services

Hosted tools may already offer a free tier, though its features and limits differ by service and can change. Anthropic’s Claude pricing page lists a free plan with capabilities including web search, code generation, file creation, and connectors; paid plans add features and usage. This is one reason not to treat a local runner or chat interface as an automatic substitute for the whole Claude service.

Perplexity’s help center describes its free Standard plan as offering basic searches and a limited amount of Pro Searches, while excluding advanced models and other features from the free tier. As those terms can change, check the current service details before deciding whether to switch. The available sources do not establish precise current feature sets for ChatGPT and NotebookLM or a full comparison across all four services.

A practical way to choose

  1. Start with your main task. For document Q&A, investigate AnythingLLM; for local model execution, look at Ollama; for a self-hosted, multi-provider chat front end, consider LibreChat.
  2. Decide where the work should run. Local inference and self-hosting require you to handle setup; a hosted service has its own plan features and usage limits.
  3. Choose the model or provider separately. An interface and a model runner do not establish that a particular model is available, included, or equivalent to a hosted assistant’s capabilities.
  4. Check the license and current terms. Confirm the project’s license and any model or provider conditions, then verify hosted-plan details on the service’s official page.
  5. For local models, verify hardware requirements for that exact model. The tool descriptions cited here do not establish a generally suitable computer specification.
