For ordinary paper documents, start with Adobe Scan: it detects page boundaries, creates PDFs, and applies OCR. For identifying stars and planets, Stellarium Mobile is the clearest planetarium-style option, although its mobile listing includes in-app purchases. For learning to play, Yousician covers guitar, bass, ukulele, piano, and singing with microphone-based feedback; its Premium+ offer is a seven-day trial rather than proof of a permanently free lesson library.

If by “scanning” you mean reading printed sheet music, use PlayScan: Sheet Music Scanner instead. Its free player is separate from its limited free scanning allowance and Pro import/export features. The right choice therefore depends on what you are capturing, whether you need live sky identification or a simulated sky, and whether “free” means free download, a limited tier, or a time-limited trial.

Quick picks by job

Task Best starting app What the official listing documents What “free” means
Receipts, forms, notes, whiteboards and other documents Adobe Scan Automatic boundary detection, PDF creation and OCR; Adobe lists iOS 15+ and Android 8.0+ compatibility. Free to download. Adobe promotes Acrobat Pro for additional capabilities, so do not assume every editing feature is free.
Identifying stars and planets or exploring the sky by date and place Stellarium Mobile Real-time identification plus simulations based on date, time and location. The Google Play listing shows in-app purchases; the free/paid boundary can vary by store and region.
Reading and playing printed sheet music PlayScan: Sheet Music Scanner Plays scanned scores; its listing distinguishes free playback from scanning and import/export limits. Full player is free, while free scans are limited. Unlimited scanning, multi-page import and PDF import/export are Pro functions.
Learning guitar, bass, ukulele, piano or singing Yousician Five learning areas, microphone-based feedback and practice on a real instrument. The site advertises seven-day Premium+ access. Treat it as free to try, not a permanently unrestricted catalog.
Song-based guitar, bass or ukulele lessons Fender Play The official page covers guitar, bass and ukulele and uses “Start For Free” language. Check what remains available after onboarding; the free-start message does not establish that the whole course is free.

These are documented starting points, not an independent accuracy ranking. App features, operating-system support, prices and trial terms can change by version, region and date.

What “free app” really tells you

App stores use “free” for several different arrangements. A free download may unlock only capture and basic export while advanced editing is sold separately. A free tier may impose a quota, as PlayScan does for scans. A trial may expose a paid catalog for a fixed period, as Yousician does with its advertised seven-day Premium+ access. An app can also be free on one platform while a mobile edition has paid upgrades.

As the strings stretch with use, the guitar will hold tuning better over time.

Before you invest time in a library or workflow, check four things:

  • Task fit: document OCR, sheet-music recognition and sky identification are different jobs. A document scanner is not a music-score reader.
  • Free boundary: look for quotas, Pro labels, in-app purchases and trial duration in your local store.
  • Device and accessories: Adobe Scan needs a compatible iOS or Android device with a camera; Yousician expects a real instrument but says no extra cables or microphones are required; Stellarium’s mobile experience is app-first.
  • Export or practice needs: decide whether you need a searchable PDF, an imported multi-page score, offline sky simulation or feedback while you play. Those needs determine whether a limited tier is sufficient.

Best free app for ordinary document scanning: Adobe Scan

What it captures

Adobe describes Adobe Scan as turning a phone or tablet into a PDF scanner. Its documented examples include receipts, forms, notes and whiteboards. Automatic boundary detection helps isolate the page from the surrounding desk, and OCR converts recognized text into searchable content.

Adobe’s statement that “Adobe Scan is completely free to download” refers to download status. The same product page promotes Acrobat Pro as an upgrade for additional capabilities. That distinction matters if your workflow requires extensive PDF editing rather than capture, cleanup and OCR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility

Adobe lists iOS 15 or later and Android 8.0 or later for the app. Confirm the requirement against your phone or tablet before installing, especially on an older device. Store availability and feature gates can change after an app update.

A practical scanning workflow

  1. Install Adobe Scan from Adobe’s product page or your device’s official app store, then open it and allow camera access when prompted.
  2. Place the document on a contrasting, reasonably flat surface. Keep all four edges visible so automatic boundary detection has a clear outline.
  3. Frame the page and capture it. Let the app detect the boundaries; review the crop before adding another page.
  4. Repeat the capture for a multi-page form, notes packet or receipt bundle. Check that pages are in the intended order.
  5. Run OCR if you need searchable text. Inspect names, numbers and totals manually: OCR is a convenience feature, not a guarantee that every character is correct.
  6. Save or share the resulting PDF using the available export controls. If an editing command asks for an Acrobat upgrade, that is a paid capability boundary rather than a scanning failure.

Where Adobe Scan is the wrong tool

Adobe Scan is aimed at ordinary documents. It is not the appropriate choice when the primary input is printed musical notation that you want to play back. For that job, use a score-oriented app such as PlayScan.

When “scanning” means sheet music: PlayScan

What the listing says

PlayScan: Sheet Music Scanner is a separate, adjacent category. Its Google Play listing, updated September 24, 2026, says the full player is free, but limits free scans. Unlimited scanning, multi-page import and PDF import/export are reserved for Pro.

That split explains why a document scanner may disappoint a musician: OCR for prose and recognition of a musical staff are different processing tasks. Choose PlayScan when the desired result is a playable score rather than a general-purpose PDF archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deciding whether the free allowance is enough

  • Occasional practice: if you have only a few pages and mainly need playback, the free player may be sufficient.
  • Method books or large folders: repeated scanning, multi-page projects and PDF import/export are exactly the features the listing places in Pro, so expect a paid upgrade if those are central to your workflow.
  • Archiving: confirm the export requirement before scanning a large collection. A free playback feature does not imply unlimited PDF creation.

Because quotas and purchase terms are store-controlled, read the current Google Play description on your device before relying on a specific scan count.

Best free starting point for stargazing: Stellarium Mobile

Identification and simulation

The Stellarium Mobile listing describes real-time identification and simulations that can be set by date, time and location. That combination supports two different activities: pointing a phone at the current sky to identify an object, or exploring how the sky changes at another time and place.

How to use it for a first observing session

  1. Install the mobile app from the official store listing and allow the location and motion-orientation permissions it requests if you want live pointing and local-sky results.
  2. Set the observing location and verify the date and time. A wrong location or clock produces a convincing but incorrect sky.
  3. For live identification, hold the phone steadily and move it slowly across the sky. Use the object label as a starting point, then compare the displayed position with what you can actually see.
  4. For planning, change the date and time to the intended observing window. Note where the target will rise and what direction the simulation places it.
  5. Check the store page for the current in-app purchase boundary before assuming a feature is included at no cost.

Mobile versus desktop Stellarium

The official Stellarium software page describes the desktop software as free and open source. That statement applies to the desktop project; it should not be used to infer that every mobile feature or tier is free. The mobile app has its own Google Play listing and displays in-app purchases.

What this app does not replace

A phone planetarium can identify and simulate objects, but it does not make a faint object visible through clouds or city light. Treat the display as a navigation aid. Verify the date, time and location settings, and learn the difference between an object’s label on screen and a confirmed visual sighting.

Learning an instrument with a free app

Yousician: broad instrument coverage and live feedback

Yousician covers guitar, bass, ukulele, piano and singing. Its approach uses the device microphone to listen while you play a real instrument and provide feedback. The company’s own wording is: “All you need is an instrument and the app. No extra accessories like cables or mics needed.” That is a vendor claim about the required setup, not an independent latency or accuracy test.

The site currently promotes a seven-day Premium+ trial. During that period you can evaluate the lesson flow and feedback, but the offer is not evidence of permanently free access to the complete lesson library. Trial length, renewal behavior and available content can change, so read the checkout screen and store terms before starting.

Setting up a first Yousician practice session

  1. Install the app from the official site’s platform link and create or sign in to an account.
  2. Choose the learning area that matches your goal: guitar, bass, ukulele, piano or singing.
  3. Use a real instrument for the playing paths. For guitar, an acoustic instrument is a valid starting category if you do not already own one; no particular model is required by the documented setup.
  4. Place the phone or tablet where its microphone can hear both you and the instrument. Follow the in-app calibration or sound-check prompts if shown.
  5. Start with the introductory lesson and play the requested notes or chords. Treat the feedback as practice guidance and listen for timing or tuning issues yourself.
  6. If you activate Premium+, record the trial end date and review renewal terms. Decide whether the free access meets your needs before the trial expires.

Fender Play: a focused alternative for three instruments

Fender Play is relevant if your target is guitar, bass or ukulele. Its official page emphasizes song-based learning and uses “Start For Free” language. That is a useful invitation to test the onboarding experience, but it does not establish that the entire course library remains free after the initial setup. Verify the content and terms shown for your country.

Choose between the two services by scope: Yousician is the broader option if you may switch among five learning areas or want microphone-based feedback; Fender Play is the narrower fit when your plan is specifically song-oriented guitar, bass or ukulele study. Neither description supplies an independent comparison of teaching quality, recognition accuracy or completion rates.

Common mistakes and fixes

Confusing a free download with a free feature set

Symptom: the app installs without payment, then asks for an upgrade when you export, import or continue a course. Fix: identify the exact feature you need before starting. Adobe’s free-download statement does not make every Acrobat capability free; PlayScan explicitly places several scanning and PDF functions in Pro; Yousician’s advertised access is a seven-day trial.

Using a document scanner for musical notation

Symptom: you have a PDF image of a score but no useful playback or notation recognition. Fix: use PlayScan for sheet-music scanning and keep Adobe Scan for prose documents, receipts, forms, notes and whiteboards.

Getting the wrong sky in a planetarium app

Symptom: labels do not match the sky above you. Fix: recheck location, date, time and orientation permissions. A simulation is only as accurate as those inputs.

Expecting lessons without an instrument

Symptom: a music-learning course asks you to play and cannot evaluate silent tapping. Fix: plan for a real instrument. Yousician lists acoustic guitar among its options and says the app-plus-instrument setup needs no extra cables or microphones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a trial will remain free

Symptom: a payment or renewal appears after the introductory period. Fix: read the trial and renewal terms at signup, note the end date, and cancel through the relevant app-store or account controls if you do not want to continue.

Privacy and reliability checks before you rely on an app

These apps handle different kinds of input: camera images and OCR for documents, location and device orientation for sky mapping, and microphone audio for playing feedback. Grant only the permissions needed for the feature you intend to use, and avoid scanning sensitive paperwork until you understand where files are saved and how they are shared. For music practice, test microphone pickup in a quiet room before judging feedback. For stargazing, test the orientation and location behavior outdoors before an important observation.

Keep a manual fallback. Save an original document photo before editing, retain a paper or image copy of an important score, and use a printed star chart or ordinary sky knowledge if a phone battery, sensor or network connection fails. These precautions do not change which app is the best starting point; they prevent a free app’s limits from becoming a single point of failure.

Bottom line

Use Adobe Scan for everyday document capture and OCR, PlayScan when the input is sheet music, Stellarium Mobile for interactive sky identification and date/location simulation, and Yousician for the widest instrument-learning coverage. Fender Play is worth trying when song-based guitar, bass or ukulele lessons are your specific goal. In every case, verify the current store terms: “free” may mean a download, a quota-limited feature, or a seven-day trial rather than unlimited use.
