The best FPS for you depends on what you want from a shooter: tactical rounds, fast competitive matches, sprawling squad battles, hero abilities, battle royale, or a story-led campaign. This guide groups notable games by that experience rather than claiming one objective winner. The descriptions and platform details below reflect sources reviewed on October 7, 2026; check each game’s official store listing for current platforms, availability, price, and live-service details.
How to choose an FPS
Start with the kind of play you want, then check whether the game’s current platform and access model fit your setup. A campaign you can play solo is a different commitment from an ongoing multiplayer game, and a tactical round-based shooter rewards different skills from a fast arcade match.
- Solo story or ongoing multiplayer: Decide whether you want a campaign with a defined narrative or a multiplayer game built around repeated matches and updates. Electronic Arts’ shooter catalog spans both single-player stories and multiplayer battles, so “FPS” alone does not tell you which format a particular game offers. EA’s shooter catalog
- Round-based tactics or quick action: Tactical shooters emphasize planning, positioning, and coordinated decisions; arcade-oriented games prioritize a brisker pace.
- Small-team roles or large battles: Some games organize teams around hero abilities and defined roles, while others emphasize squads, objectives, and vehicles across larger conflicts.
- Battle royale or other modes: Consider whether you want the survival-and-squad focus of battle royale, objective play, or competitive arena-style matches.
- Platform and access: Platform support is title- and edition-specific. Confirm it on the official game or store page for your region rather than assuming that a franchise or genre label guarantees availability.
AltChar’s Shooter hub is a rolling feed of shooter news, guides, and coverage—not a stable ranked list or an objective league table. Its feed inspected October 7, 2026 included live-service updates and guides. The recommendations here use play style, team structure, and campaign-versus-multiplayer fit as selection criteria instead. AltChar Shooter hub

Which FPS fits your play style?
For fast, familiar competitive action: Call of Duty
AltChar characterizes Call of Duty as fast and arcade-oriented, and points to Ranked Play as a competitive option. It is a fit to consider if you want direct, quick matches rather than a slower tactical pace. That is an editorial description, not a measured performance comparison. AltChar’s competitive-shooter guide
#1 Best Overall
- The story, characters, voice acting, gameplay, and music that made the original a sensation return, remade for modern consoles
- This evolutionary leap breathes new life into every cutscene, and rebuilds every corner of the world
- Incredible new graphics bring the wild growth of the jungles, forests, and swamps to life in exquisite detail
- Characters are rendered in fine detail so that facial wrinkles, pores, & separate eye & iris movements are visible, allowing for rich animations
- Any injuries to his actual body will leave their mark permanently, telling a story of each player's unique journey
For big squad battles and vehicles: Battlefield
AltChar describes Battlefield around large-scale conflicts, squads, objectives, and vehicles. Choose this style if the appeal is coordinating with a squad in a broad combined-arms fight, rather than focusing only on close-quarters individual duels. Individual Battlefield games differ, so verify the specific title’s current platforms and modes. AltChar’s competitive-shooter guide
For tactical rounds and character abilities: Valorant
Valorant combines tactical, round-based play with character abilities. PlayStation’s editorial describes it as a 5v5 tactical shooter; AltChar calls it an ability-based strategic shooter. PlayStation’s own promotional description says, “Outwit, outplay and outshine your competition with tactical abilities, precise gunplay and adaptive teamwork in this 5v5 tactical shooter from Riot Games.” PlayStation’s FPS editorial
For PC competitive shooting: Counter-Strike 2
AltChar includes Counter-Strike 2 among competitive shooters and lists PC as its platform. It is one to investigate if you want a PC competitive-shooter option; check its current store listing for platform, system, and access details before deciding. AltChar’s competitive-shooter guide
For hero abilities in battle royale: Apex Legends
PlayStation describes Apex Legends as a blend of hero shooter and battle royale, with squad play and character abilities. It suits players who want to build a team around character skills while competing in a battle-royale format. PlayStation’s FPS editorial

For defined team roles: Overwatch
PlayStation describes Overwatch as a 5v5 shooter organized around Tank, Damage, and Support roles. Consider it if choosing a role and coordinating hero abilities with a team is more appealing than a battle-royale structure. PlayStation’s FPS editorial
For a historical shooter example: Battlefield 1
GamesRadar describes Battlefield 1 as a historical multiplayer shooter and lists PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Those are the platforms listed for Battlefield 1 in that roundup; they should not be read as a current availability guarantee or as the platform list for other Battlefield games. Check your regional store before purchase. GamesRadar’s FPS roundup, dated September 30, 2026
Which shooter should you play with friends?
Pick based on what your group enjoys coordinating. Apex Legends makes squad play and character abilities central to its battle-royale identity, according to PlayStation. Overwatch offers 5v5 team play with Tank, Damage, and Support roles. Battlefield’s large-scale matches emphasize squads, objectives, and vehicles, according to AltChar. These are different teamwork styles, not interchangeable versions of the same match.

What is a good tactical shooter for beginners?
Valorant is the clearest tactical example in the sources reviewed: PlayStation describes it as a 5v5 tactical shooter, and AltChar emphasizes its abilities and strategic play. That identifies its style, not its difficulty or a guarantee that it is beginner-friendly. If you are new to tactical shooters, look for the game’s current tutorials and practice modes, and expect team coordination and learning character abilities to matter.
Which FPS games are on PS5, Xbox, or PC?
There is no reliable platform answer for the whole genre: support depends on the specific game, edition, region, and current store availability. The reviewed AltChar guide covers competitive shooters across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but its individual examples should still be checked title by title. The PlayStation article is an editorial guide for PS5 and PS4 in a regional PlayStation context, not a guarantee that every named game is available in every region or edition. One specific platform example: GamesRadar’s September 30, 2026 roundup lists Battlefield 1 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. That list is specific to Battlefield 1 and does not establish present-day store availability. GamesRadar’s FPS roundup

How this selection is organized
This is a play-style guide, not a definitive ranking of every FPS. The examples are included because the reviewed sources support a useful distinction in format or team experience: arcade competition, tactical rounds, large-scale squad combat, hero roles, battle royale, or historical multiplayer. AltChar and GameSpot have 2026 shooter roundups, while PlayStation’s guide supplies platform-owner descriptions and EA’s catalog spans both multiplayer and story-led shooters; none of these sources establishes a universal “best” game for every player.
