Choose the resin from the part’s required behavior, not from its color. Standard or Model resin is the safest choice for detailed appearance models; Tough or Tough 2000 suits ABS-like functional parts; Durable is designed for polypropylene-like, low-friction behavior; Flexible and Elastic create rubber-like features; Rigid 10K targets very stiff, dimensionally stable engineering parts; and High Temp is intended for heat-exposed tooling. Dental, BioMed, casting, and thermoforming materials require their specific validated workflows.

Start with the job, not the resin name

Formlabs resin families are engineered around different combinations of detail, stiffness, impact resistance, flexibility, friction, temperature resistance, and regulatory use. There is no single “best” resin for every project. A visual prototype may need crisp text and cosmetic surfaces, while a snap-fit enclosure needs controlled flex and resistance to repeated assembly. A dental guide or medical device has a completely different requirement: the material, printer profile, cleaning, curing, and quality process must all match the stated indication.

Use the table below as a first filter, then confirm the exact resin version and printer setup before printing.

Choose by the mechanical behavior you need

Standard and Model: appearance-first prototypes

Standard Resin is the default for parts where visual quality matters more than specialized mechanical performance. Formlabs describes it as providing high resolution and fine features directly from the printer, making it suitable for rapid prototyping and product development. Use it for concept models, housings that will not be repeatedly flexed, display parts, fit checks, miniature details, and presentation models.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Model materials belong in the same general category: detailed, looks-like prototypes. They are useful when you need to inspect geometry, surface transitions, lettering, or assembly clearance before committing to a more specialized material. Do not treat a sharp Standard print as evidence that the same design will survive impact, heat, or repeated snap-fitting; those are separate material questions.

Tough and Tough 2000: ABS-like functional parts

Tough was designed to simulate ABS plastic, with comparable tensile strength and modulus for functional prototypes. That makes it a practical starting point for enclosures, snap-fit joints, brackets, clips, and assemblies that will be handled or repeatedly assembled. It is generally a better choice than Standard when the part must flex slightly without cracking or tolerate ordinary knocks.

Tough 2000 is the related option to investigate when you want a tougher, more durable functional prototype. Select between the available Tough versions using the current material data and printer profile for your machine; the version number is not interchangeable with an older profile simply because the family name is similar.

Durable: polypropylene-like movement and impact

Durable simulates polypropylene (PP), with low modulus and high-impact strength. Its lower stiffness can be valuable for living-hinge-like concepts, packaging, low-friction interfaces, sliding parts, and consumer-product mechanisms where a rigid resin would bind or wear quickly. It is also useful for testing how a design behaves when it can deflect rather than simply resist movement.

Durable is not a universal substitute for production polypropylene. A prototype can reproduce useful trends in flexibility, impact, and friction while still differing from an injection-molded production grade in texture, fatigue life, chemical resistance, and manufacturing history. Use the print to answer a design question, then validate critical performance with the intended production material.

Flexible 80A and Elastic 50A: soft and compliant parts

Flexible is formulated to simulate an 80A-durometer rubber. It suits soft-touch surfaces, ergonomic grips, compliant buttons, seals used for fit evaluation, and flexible features in multi-material assemblies. The material can bend substantially more than Tough or Standard, but that flexibility also changes dimensional accuracy, support strategy, and the way thin walls behave during handling.

Elastic 50A is softer and more rubber-like. Consider it for highly compliant components, cushioning, wearable-contact concepts, and parts that must deform with relatively little force. Thin sections may be difficult to wash and cure uniformly, and a soft prototype can sag or stretch while being measured. Design test coupons with the wall thickness and geometry of the final feature rather than relying on a generic hardness value alone.

Rigid 10K and Rigid 4000: stiffness and dimensional stability

Rigid materials are aimed at engineering parts that should resist deflection. Rigid 10K is the choice to investigate when maximum stiffness and dimensional stability are central, such as jigs, fixtures, mounts, and fluid- or airflow-related components. Rigid 4000 is another engineering option in the family; compare the current data sheet and approved profile to determine which version better matches your load and geometry.

High stiffness does not mean unlimited toughness. A very rigid part may crack under a sudden impact that a tougher, less stiff resin would absorb. Check whether the dominant load is continuous deflection, vibration, clamping, impact, or a combination before choosing between Rigid and Tough.

High Temp: elevated-temperature tooling

High Temp is intended for heat-resistant molds, inserts, mounts, housings, and fixtures, including applications related to injection molding. Formlabs’ support information lists a heat-deflection figure of 238 °C at 0.45 MPa for High Temp V2 and 289 °C for V1. Those figures belong to their respective versions and test conditions; they are not a blanket operating-temperature rating for every shape or load.

Use High Temp when the part must remain serviceable near a heat source, but account for clamping force, wall thickness, exposure time, thermal cycling, and the way the part is supported. A printed insert that survives a short test may still distort during a long production cycle. Build a small process-specific coupon before committing to a full mold or fixture.

Specialist materials need specialist workflows

Dental and BioMed resins

Dental and BioMed products are not interchangeable with general-purpose Standard, Tough, or Clear materials. Their indications can include surgical or dental guides, splints, dentures, and other named medical workflows. The approved use depends on the exact product, printer, layer setting, wash and cure process, and quality controls documented for that material.

If a part will contact a patient, enter the body, or support a regulated clinical process, use only the named biocompatible resin and its validated workflow. A general-purpose resin that appears smooth or strong is not an equivalent substitute. Follow the applicable labeling, curing, cleaning, traceability, and inspection requirements for your region and application.

Casting and thermoforming materials

Clear Cast is mapped to investment-casting workflows, where the printed pattern must behave predictably during burnout. Fast Model is intended for rapid production of models and is Formlabs’ fastest resin, with advertised print speeds of more than 100 mm per hour under the supported setup. Tough 1500 is associated with thermoforming applications in Formlabs’ material guidance.

These uses depend on the process around the resin. A casting pattern requires the correct burnout schedule and investment; a thermoforming model must tolerate the forming temperature, pressure, and release method. Confirm the current application guide rather than selecting a material solely because its name sounds appropriate.

Check printer, tank, layer, and resin-version compatibility

Material performance starts with a supported combination of printer generation, resin tank, layer thickness, resin version, and post-processing settings. Formlabs’ current compatibility guide lists these relationships. A cartridge that fits physically may still be unsupported for your printer or tank, and an older profile may produce different exposure or cure results than the current version.

Compatibility item What to verify What can go wrong if ignored
Printer generation The exact model and firmware-supported resin list Unavailable material profile, incorrect exposure, or failed print.
Resin tank Tank type, condition, and whether the resin version is approved for it Clouding, contamination, poor release, or premature tank wear.
Layer thickness Supported layer heights for the resin and printer Changed detail, cure depth, dimensional accuracy, or print time.
Resin version Version printed on the cartridge and the matching profile Unexpected mechanical or thermal results when an old profile is used.
Post-processing Material-specific wash solvent, wash duration, dry time, and cure cycle Sticky surfaces, under-cured parts, brittle parts, or inaccurate dimensions.

Never mix different resins in a cartridge or tank. Even closely related versions can have different pigments, exposure requirements, and cure behavior. If a tank contains the wrong material, stop and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and replacement procedure instead of trying to dilute it with another resin.

A practical resin-selection procedure

  1. Define the part’s job. Write down whether it is visual, load-bearing, flexible, low-friction, heat-exposed, patient-contacting, cast, or thermoformed. If several apply, rank them; the highest-risk requirement should drive the material.
  2. Identify the failure you must avoid. Examples include a snap-fit cracking, a fixture deflecting, a seal failing to compress, a slider binding, or a mold distorting under heat. This is more useful than starting with a favorite resin.
  3. Shortlist one primary and one fallback family. For example, compare Tough with Durable for a moving enclosure, or Rigid 10K with High Temp for a hot, stiff fixture. Keep the comparison tied to the same geometry and test conditions.
  4. Open the current compatibility guide. Confirm the printer generation, tank, layer thickness, resin version, and supported post-processing settings before ordering or loading a cartridge.
  5. Print a representative coupon. Include the thinnest wall, snap-fit, hole, thread, hinge, or sealing surface that matters. A flat bar rarely predicts the behavior of the real feature.
  6. Wash, dry, and cure exactly as specified. Measure the part only after the complete supported process. Residual solvent or incomplete curing can make a material seem softer, stickier, or less accurate than it should be.
  7. Test the actual use case. Cycle an assembly, apply the intended clamp load, expose the part to the expected heat, or run the forming and casting process. Record the resin version and settings with the result.

Post-processing and handling decisions that change results

Resin selection does not end when the print finishes. Standard and rigid parts can lose fine edges if supports are removed aggressively. Flexible and elastic parts can stretch during removal, so support placement and a gentle handling sequence matter. Tough and Durable parts should be allowed to complete the specified wash and cure process before impact or fatigue testing.

Keep resin within its stated shelf life and storage conditions, protect it from unintended light exposure, and inspect the tank before a demanding job. Contaminated resin, a damaged film, or a tank with cured debris can create defects that look like a material problem. For critical engineering, dental, or medical work, document cartridge lot or version, printer, tank, layer setting, wash cycle, cure cycle, and inspection result.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

  • Using Standard for a snap-fit: switch the trial to Tough or Tough 2000 and test repeated assembly rather than a single insertion.
  • Using Rigid for an impact part: compare Tough if cracking follows a sudden load; stiffness alone does not provide impact resistance.
  • Using Tough where low friction is essential: evaluate Durable for a sliding or moving consumer-product concept.
  • Expecting Flexible to hold tight dimensions: increase support where necessary, control wall thickness, and measure after full cure.
  • Choosing High Temp from the temperature number alone: reproduce the real pressure, duration, thermal cycling, and support conditions.
  • Printing a medical component in a general-purpose resin: stop and select the dedicated Dental or BioMed product with its validated process.
  • Assuming a cartridge fits every printer: verify the exact printer, tank, resin version, and layer profile before loading it.

Examples: matching common projects to a starting material

Product enclosure with a snap-fit lid

Start with Tough because the design must flex during assembly and tolerate handling. Add a small cycle test: open and close the lid repeatedly, inspect the hinge and latch roots, and record any whitening or crack initiation. If the concept also includes a low-friction sliding tray, print that feature in Durable as a separate comparison rather than expecting one resin to optimize both behaviors.

Ergonomic handheld grip

Use Flexible 80A when you need a firm rubber-like feel, or Elastic 50A when the grip must compress more easily. Evaluate the actual wall thickness and skin geometry; hardness labels alone do not predict the force required to squeeze a complex shape.

Precision fixture near a hot process

Compare Rigid 10K for stiffness with High Temp for heat exposure. If both requirements are severe, run a coupon under the combined load and temperature instead of selecting solely from room-temperature stiffness or a headline thermal value.

Dental guide or patient-contacting part

Choose the dedicated Dental or BioMed resin whose indication matches the device, then follow its printer, cleaning, curing, and documentation workflow. Do not substitute a visually similar general-purpose resin.
