Start by increasing your phone’s text size until it feels comfortable at your usual viewing distance, then check that the text stands out clearly from its background. For app and mobile-web designers, the equivalent priorities are to support larger text, maintain sufficient contrast, and let spacing expand without clipping or hiding content. There is no single font size or typeface established as best for every reader.
What font size should I use on my phone?
Use the size that lets you read comfortably at the distance where you normally hold your phone. There is no evidence-backed universal setting in the guidance covered here: comfort varies by reader, device, viewing distance, and display conditions. A value intended for app designers is not automatically the right personal setting for you.
To find your starting point, open a screen with text you read regularly and raise the phone’s system text-size or font-size setting in small increments. Pause at each setting and read at your normal distance rather than moving the phone unusually close or relying on a pinch-to-zoom gesture. Stop when the text is comfortable without effort. If you need the size increased further, try it; the goal is usability, not matching a preset number.
Setting names and available ranges depend on the operating system and on how an app displays its text. A system-level change may not affect every app in the same way. Check the places where you actually read—such as messages, articles, and menus—and adjust any separate in-app text control if one is available. If an app’s text stays too small or becomes difficult to use after the system setting changes, that is a limitation of that app’s support, not proof that you chose the wrong size.

Why Apple’s point sizes are not a personal prescription
Apple’s accessibility guidance gives iOS and iPadOS custom type styles a 17-point default and an 11-point minimum. Those figures describe Apple app-design guidance for custom interface text; they are not a recommendation that every phone reader should use 17 or 11 points. Apple also advises supporting larger text and accounting for thin type weights by using larger sizes.
This distinction matters because a design minimum answers a different question from “What size is comfortable for me?” A minimum helps designers establish a baseline for an interface. It cannot account for every person’s preferred viewing distance, display, or reading conditions. As a reader, use the phone’s available controls and judge the result in normal use. As a designer, treat the platform values as design guidance, not as a ceiling on text size.
Check contrast, not just the color or theme
Text needs to stand out from the background behind it. WCAG 2.2, a 2023 W3C Recommendation, specifies a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary-size text and 3:1 for large text. WCAG defines large text here as at least 18 points regular or 14 points bold. Google’s Android accessibility guidance repeats these thresholds.

These are minimum conformance thresholds, not proof that a particular screen will feel comfortable to every reader. Higher contrast may help some people or in some viewing conditions. A color pair that looks distinct in one setting may be harder to distinguish in another, so assess the text against its actual background rather than judging a color in isolation. If an app offers a high-contrast theme or lets you select text colors, try those options when the current combination is difficult to read.
When comparing light and dark themes, check both the text and the background in each one. Do not assume that changing the theme automatically produces an easy-to-read result; the relevant question is whether the text has adequate contrast in the version you are using. For app designers, Android guidance recommends considering a high-contrast theme or allowing users to choose text colors.
Give text room to breathe
Text that is large enough can still be difficult to follow if lines are cramped or letters and words sit too close together. Apple’s design tips identify increased line height or letter spacing as ways to improve legibility. Readers may find that an app’s spacing controls help when they are available; designers should avoid layouts that break when text or spacing increases.

WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.12 sets out a specific resilience check for web content. It asks whether content and functionality remain available when users override authored text spacing to these values:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Line height of at least 1.5 times the font size.
- Paragraph spacing of at least 2 times the font size.
- Letter spacing of at least 0.12 times the font size.
- Word spacing of at least 0.16 times the font size.
These figures describe an override-tolerance test, not required starting settings for every website. A site does not have to begin with those exact spacing values. The test is whether a user can apply them without losing content or functionality—for example, because words overlap, text is cut off, or a control becomes inaccessible.
For a reader, the practical lesson is to use spacing controls when available and judge whether the result is easier to follow. For a designer, the practical lesson is to let content reflow and controls remain usable as spacing expands. A layout that only works at one tightly fixed size is not adaptable enough for people who need larger text or more space.

Keep text adjustable instead of turning it into an image
W3C guidance notes that text rendered as an image is harder to scale and recolor than actual text. Selectable, adjustable text is preferable where possible because it can respond to user settings in ways an image of lettering cannot. This is especially important for text that conveys instructions or other information readers need to access.
As a reader, if a page or graphic remains tiny or difficult to read after you change text settings, the text may not be adjustable in the same way as ordinary interface text. Zooming may help with some content, but an image-based label is still less adaptable than text that can resize and recolor. Designers should avoid using an image where real text can serve the same purpose, and should ensure essential text remains available when users enlarge it.
How to make phone text easier to read
- Start with system text size. In your phone’s settings, look for a text-size or font-size control; the precise label and location depend on the operating system. Increase it gradually while looking at content you use often.
- Judge it at your normal distance. Read without bringing the phone unusually close. Choose a size that feels comfortable in the way you ordinarily use the device, rather than aiming for an Apple design value or another platform’s minimum.
- Check the apps you rely on. Test more than one screen and app. If one app does not follow the system setting, look for its own text-size option or an accessibility setting. App support can vary.
- Try a clearer contrast option. If text blends into its background, check whether the app or phone offers a high-contrast theme or a text-color choice. Assess the actual text and background together.
- Use spacing controls if available. Adjust line or letter spacing when cramped text remains hard to follow, and check that the surrounding layout still works.
- Recheck ordinary tasks. Read a longer passage and use menus or controls at the chosen size. A comfortable reading setting should not make important content or functionality disappear.
What app and mobile-web designers should support
Design guidance and personal settings meet at one principle: users need room to adapt text to themselves. Apple recommends supporting larger text, and its design tips advise at least 11 points for text intended to be legible at a typical viewing distance without zooming. That is platform interface advice, not a universal reading prescription. Apple’s accessibility guidance separately lists 17 points as the default and 11 points as the minimum for iOS and iPadOS custom type styles.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
These recommendations should not be flattened into one magic number. The 11-point design tip, the custom-style minimum, and the default describe Apple’s design context. A designer should support larger settings rather than treating a nominal default as sufficient for all users. Thin type weights also call for care: Apple’s guidance says to account for them by using larger sizes.
For web content, test that users can increase spacing to the WCAG 2.2 values without losing content or functionality. Do not mistake the test values for a mandated initial layout. For both apps and sites, check contrast against the actual background and consider giving users a way to choose a higher-contrast theme or text colors. Prefer real text to text baked into images so users have more opportunity to scale or recolor it.
How to compare two text settings
If you are choosing between the current setting and a larger size, or between two themes, compare them on the same three axes:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Size: Is the text comfortable at your ordinary viewing distance?
- Contrast: Does the text stand out from its actual background in the theme you use?
- Adaptability: Can text size and spacing expand without clipping, overlap, or loss of controls or content?
These checks combine the reader-facing decision with the design concerns in Apple, Android, and W3C guidance. They are more useful than choosing a typeface or point size by name alone, because the guidance does not establish one universally best font family, weight, or size for phone reading.
What the standards can—and cannot—tell you
WCAG contrast thresholds and text-spacing values give designers concrete criteria to check. Apple’s point-size guidance gives a platform-specific reference for interface design, while Android guidance identifies contrast and user choice as accessibility considerations. None of these figures is a result from a readability experiment establishing the ideal phone setting for every person.
For an individual reader, the right starting point is therefore a comfortable text size, followed by a check of contrast and available spacing options. For designers, the task is to support user adjustment and keep the interface intact as those settings change. A standards threshold can identify a minimum or resilience requirement; it cannot replace checking whether the result works for a particular person and screen.
