GTA 6’s Leonida is a fictional state inspired by Florida, not a literal recreation of the state. The clearest real-world matches are in Vice City, especially Miami’s South Beach: outside analysis identifies Art Deco hotels, Ocean Drive buildings, causeways and views toward Brickell and Wynwood. The Leonida Keys and swampy Grassrivers also evoke the Florida Keys and Everglades, but no detailed, developer-confirmed map matches every region to a specific Florida place.
Leonida is Florida-inspired, not a real Florida map
Grand Theft Auto VI places its story in Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional version of Florida. The state name, cities and regions belong to the game, even when their architecture, ecology and culture clearly draw on South Florida. That distinction matters because a recognizable building can be identified with reasonable confidence, while a whole region may only resemble a broad landscape or cultural type.
GamesRadar+’s updated guide lists six named Leonida regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. The names establish the game’s geography; they do not prove that each area is a one-to-one copy of a real county, town or park. No detailed Rockstar statement confirming such a region-by-region inspiration map has been published in the material available for this article.

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
- Identifiable landmark: a particular building or street scene has been matched by an expert to a real place.
- Broad geographic or ecological analogue: the game uses a similar coastline, island chain, wetland or urban form, but no exact counterpart is confirmed.
- Speculation: a fan or editorial theory assigns a fictional area to a particular town or cultural region without enough evidence to establish the match.
The strongest matches are in Miami’s South Beach
The most specific location evidence comes from Axios’ December 5, 2023 analysis of the first GTA VI trailer. Axios consulted Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, whose work with Miami’s historic architecture made him a relevant specialist for identifying the trailer’s buildings.
Lummus Park and the Art Deco hotels
The trailer’s opening shows a beachfront scene that closely resembles South Beach around Lummus Park. Ciraldo identified the Loews and Royal Palm hotels and 1500 Ocean Drive in the opening shot. Their Art Deco-era styling, hotel frontage and relationship to the beach are the sort of visual details that make this a landmark-level comparison rather than a generic “it looks like Miami” impression.
That identification still does not mean every facade is copied exactly. Game environments often alter floor plans, setbacks and neighboring buildings so that streets work for missions and driving. The evidence supports recognizable architectural references in the scene, not a survey-grade recreation of South Beach.

Farther south along Ocean Drive, Ciraldo identified the Breakwater Hotel and Hotel Victor. In Leonida, those references appear under the fictional names Boardwalk and Hotel Dixon. Renaming a building is a typical Grand Theft Auto approach: the silhouette, color palette or position can evoke a real landmark while the in-game property remains part of the fictional world.
These are the best-supported real-place identifications currently available for Leonida. They come from an expert-assisted visual reading of trailer footage, not from a Rockstar list of copied buildings. Treat them as strong visual matches with altered names and possible changes to their exact arrangement.

Causeways, Brickell and Wynwood
Axios also notes views and road forms associated with the Venetian Causeway and MacArthur Causeway, along with sightlines toward Brickell and Wynwood. Those references help explain why Vice City feels larger than a single beach strip. The game is drawing on Miami’s combination of barrier-island beaches, causeway traffic, high-rise financial districts and warehouse-to-art neighborhoods.
Causeways are especially important to the sense of place. They connect the beach to mainland Miami and create long, elevated approaches with water on both sides. A fictionalized version can preserve that recognizable geography while changing lane layouts, ramps and destinations for gameplay.
What each Leonida region may represent
The following guide separates what is named or visibly described in the game from what can reasonably be inferred about Florida. Confidence refers to the strength of the comparison, not to whether a region is officially confirmed as a real location.
| Leonida region | What the available description says | Florida comparison | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Leonida’s major urban and coastal setting, including South Beach-like scenes. | Miami, particularly South Beach, Ocean Drive, Brickell, Wynwood and the Venetian and MacArthur causeways. | Strongest: named landmarks were identified in trailer analysis by Daniel Ciraldo for Axios. |
| Leonida Keys | An island-chain region named directly in the game’s geography. | The Florida Keys are the obvious broad geographic analogue: low islands, bridges, tropical water and dispersed settlements. | Plausible interpretation; no exact one-to-one developer confirmation was established. |
| Grassrivers | A swampy region shown or described as wetland country. | Everglades-like South Florida wetlands, with marshes, waterways and flat horizons. | Plausible landscape analogy; not a confirmed map of the Everglades. |
| Port Gellhorn | An area characterized by cheap motels and strip clubs. | A broad reading of Florida’s less glamorous roadside and coastal communities. | Unconfirmed; the available source does not identify a particular Florida Panhandle town. |
| Ambrosia | A rural, industrial area associated with a biker gang. | A generalized rural or exurban Florida setting rather than a documented single town. | Unconfirmed; no specific real-world match is substantiated. |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | A wilderness-filled northern region. | Florida wilderness in the broadest sense, possibly combining inland conservation landscapes and wooded terrain. | Unconfirmed; no exact Florida park match was established. |
Leonida Keys: why the Florida Keys comparison is reasonable
The name Leonida Keys makes the Florida Keys the natural comparison. Florida’s real archipelago is a chain of islands linked by bridges and causeways, with beaches, marinas, mangroves and small communities spread along a long route. A game region built around that idea can reproduce the experience of moving between islands without copying every key, channel or municipality.
That is a geographic reading, not a confirmed translation of names. The available evidence does not establish that a particular fictional island equals Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key or Key West. It is safer to say that Leonida Keys evokes the Florida Keys as an island-chain concept. Any claim that Rockstar modeled one in-game town on one named key would require additional source evidence.

Grassrivers and the Everglades-like landscape
GamesRadar+ describes Grassrivers as swampy, while Axios places the trailer’s wider South Florida panorama in a visual world that runs “from the Everglades to South Beach.” Flat wetlands, narrow waterways, sawgrass-like vegetation and wildlife create an obvious Everglades comparison. The name Grassrivers itself reinforces the idea of water moving through a grassy, low-lying landscape.
Even so, “Everglades” should be used as an ecological analogy. The evidence does not prove that Grassrivers follows the boundaries of Everglades National Park or that a particular road, settlement or wetland has been copied. Rockstar may combine several South Florida environments to make a more varied and playable region than the real wetland allows.
What can—and cannot—be said about the other regions
Port Gellhorn is not a confirmed Panhandle town
Port Gellhorn’s cheap motels and strip clubs suggest a roadside, tourism-oriented Florida environment far removed from the polished South Beach skyline. That atmosphere could draw on many parts of the state. The available description does not establish Pensacola, Panama City, Jacksonville or any other specific Panhandle city as the model, so attaching Port Gellhorn to one town would turn a mood-based comparison into an unsupported claim.
Ambrosia is a rural-industrial composite
Ambrosia is described as rural and industrial and is associated with a biker gang. Those elements can fit Florida’s inland highways, small industrial corridors and exurban communities, but they are not unique to one location. Nothing in the cited material identifies a particular county or settlement. Calling Ambrosia a composite or generalized rural Florida space is more accurate than naming a real town.
Mount Kalaga National Park has no confirmed counterpart
The northern Mount Kalaga National Park region is wilderness-filled, yet no exact Florida park match was confirmed. Florida has protected forests, wetlands and inland wildlands, but the source material does not connect the fictional mountain name to a specific real reserve. The safest description is a fictional wilderness zone that broadens Leonida beyond Miami’s coastal imagery.
Rank #4
Why the in-game map rearranges real geography
Leonida compresses and rearranges Florida. A real trip from Miami Beach through the Keys or toward the Everglades takes time and follows infrastructure that does not translate directly into a mission-driven open-world map. Developers need roads that connect activities, districts that support varied encounters and landmarks visible at useful distances. The result can preserve the feel of South Florida while moving buildings, coastlines and neighborhoods closer together.
Ciraldo made this point directly to Axios: “The architecture looks very realistic, though some buildings are out of order or on the wrong block!” His observation is a useful warning against treating trailer frames as a literal street atlas. A building may be recognizable even when its neighbors, orientation or block position have changed.
The same principle applies to regional boundaries. A swamp, island chain, industrial town and national park can sit closer together in Leonida than their real-world counterparts would. That compression is not an error in the comparison; it is part of how a fictional game state turns Florida’s varied environments into one coherent play space.
How to evaluate a claimed GTA 6 location match
- Start with a visible anchor. Look for a distinctive hotel facade, street sign, causeway shape, tower or park layout rather than relying on general color or atmosphere.
- Check the identification source. An expert-assisted comparison, such as Ciraldo’s analysis for Axios, is stronger than an unlabeled social-media screenshot or a fan map.
- Separate the building from its placement. A facade can be recognizable even if the game moves it to another block or changes nearby streets.
- Label broad landscapes as analogies. “Everglades-like wetlands” or “evokes the Florida Keys” accurately signals interpretation; “this is Everglades National Park” claims more than the evidence supports.
- Do not fill gaps with a complete unofficial map. The six region names are useful, but they do not confirm a real Florida counterpart for every border and town.
What remains unconfirmed
No detailed primary-source statement captured for this article confirms a region-by-region Florida inspiration map. In particular, the available evidence does not establish exact real-world matches for Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia or Mount Kalaga National Park. It also does not provide a count of real landmarks, research trips or Florida locations used by Rockstar.
The most defensible picture is therefore layered: Vice City contains strong, expert-identified Miami and South Beach references; Leonida Keys and Grassrivers make persuasive broad comparisons to the Florida Keys and Everglades; and the remaining regions should be treated as fictional settings whose Florida influences are atmospheric or composite until stronger evidence appears.
The bottom line for readers asking “Where is GTA 6 set?”
GTA 6 is set in fictional Leonida, a compressed Florida-inspired state. If you want the clearest real places, start with South Beach: Lummus Park, Ocean Drive, the Loews, Royal Palm, 1500 Ocean Drive, Breakwater and Hotel Victor are the strongest identified references, with the game renaming some of them Boardwalk and Hotel Dixon. Vice City also draws on the Venetian and MacArthur causeways and views toward Brickell and Wynwood.
Beyond Miami, use more careful language. Leonida Keys evokes the Florida Keys, and Grassrivers resembles Everglades-like wetlands, but neither has been confirmed as an exact one-to-one map. Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park remain fictional regions without a substantiated single Florida counterpart.
