Start by reviewing connected apps, optional health features, Health Coach access, and location permission. Keep the tracking and sharing you find useful; switch off optional collection or revoke access you do not want. Fitbit Air is designed to work with the Google Health app, and Google’s controls cover account-level data and sharing—but Google’s published guidance does not establish a verified, Fitbit Air-specific tap path for every metric.

What Fitbit Air can contribute to Google Health

Google’s Fitbit device data list names these categories for Fitbit Air:

  • Activity and fitness: connected GPS, steps, distance, swimming, cardio fitness (VO2 max), cardio load, and target cardio load.
  • Sleep: sleep log, sleep stages, and Sleep Score.
  • Resilience: resilience data.
  • Body signals: heart rate, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, breathing rate, SpO2 tracking, and skin-temperature variation.

This catalog describes data types, not a guarantee that every signal is always collected or has its own on/off switch. Collection can vary by device, service, and configuration. Google also cautions that sleep tracking is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Which settings to review first

1. Connected apps and sharing

Check which services can access Google Health data and what permissions each connection has. Revoke access for apps or services you no longer use, and narrow permissions where the controls allow it. Google says connected-service sharing can be managed in Google Health or in the connected service’s settings. For Android, Health Connect sharing can be managed through Google Health settings or Android settings; you can stop access there as well.

Google Health may connect with Health Connect, Apple Health, and APIs, while medical-record integrations are available only in certain geographies. Availability can change: Google’s May 26, 2026 connectivity article described Apple Health sharing as planned at that time, not as a universally available live connection. Check the current app and Google’s connectivity guidance before relying on a particular integration.

2. Optional health features

Review optional features that collect sensitive information and leave on only what you want to use. Google says it explains collection and use before a feature is activated, and that optional features can be turned off. Do not assume every Google Health feature or every data type in the device catalog is available on Fitbit Air, in every region, or individually controllable.

Turning a feature off should not be treated as deletion: it can stop future collection or use for that feature, but Google distinguishes that from deleting information already stored.

3. Health Coach and personalized insights

Health Coach is optional. If you opt in, Google says Coach access may include historical and future health and wellness data, your interactions with Google Health, data from connected apps, and reproductive or sexual health information stored with Google Health. Decide whether that breadth of context is worth the personalization.

Turning off personalized insights stops future use of data for that feature; it does not delete existing data. Use the separate history deletion controls if you also want to remove stored information.

4. Location permission

Google says precise location is collected for select features when location access is granted. If you do not want that access, remove Google Health’s location permission in the app or your mobile-device settings. Location is not established as necessary for every Fitbit Air function, so consider the specific feature you use before changing the permission.

5. Account security

Enable two-step authentication for the Google Account that holds your health information. This protects account access; it is separate from deciding which metrics or connected services may use health data.

Exporting, deleting, or leaving Google Health

Google provides options to export data, delete selected health history, or leave Google Health. Choose based on whether you want a copy, removal of particular records, or to stop using the service. Google says health and wellness history is retained until you delete it or leave Google Health because the service uses it for personal statistics and other features; it does not state one universal fixed retention period. Some data tied to a specific feature may be deleted when no longer needed for that feature.

Leaving Google Health removes associated Google Health data from your Google Account, but it does not automatically remove information you previously authorized for use with other Google services. Review connected services separately if you want to address copies or uses outside Google Health. Google’s privacy FAQ describes the account controls; its privacy guidance provides the broader policy context.

What Google’s privacy commitment does—and does not—say

Google states: “Google committed to not use Fitbit users’ health and wellness data for Google Ads.” This is Google’s stated commitment, not an independent audit finding. It is specifically about use of Fitbit health and wellness data for Google Ads; it does not mean no information is collected, nor does it mean integrations never share data. The data flow depends on your choices and on each connected app or platform.

Google says Google Account users’ Google and Fitbit data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy and supplemental Google Health privacy guidance. Categories can include setup information, health and wellness data, connected-service data, medical records you upload or connect, location for select features if permission is granted, and service diagnostics and usage information.

A practical decision rule

For each feature or connection, ask whether its benefit is worth the sensitivity of the data, whether another service receives it, and whether it needs location or other account information. Keep what supports your goals; disable optional collection or sharing that does not. These are personal trade-offs, not a Google-published ranking of settings.
