Start in System Configuration and Character Configuration. Increase the overall UI scale in Display Settings, enlarge specific HUD components through HUD Layout, then adjust chat text in Log Window Settings. For hard-to-find controls, enlarge the cursor or enable cursor sonar; for a single small gamepad window, use window zoom. Accessibility options such as visual alerts can add a non-text cue where the current client supports them.
These controls do different jobs. A global scale changes most interface elements, HUD sizing targets selected components, chat settings affect log text, cursor tools improve pointer visibility, and window zoom enlarges one panel temporarily. Exact labels and platform support can differ by client version, so use the current in-game menus rather than assuming an option documented in an older patch note is present everywhere.
Where FFXIV keeps readability and visibility controls
Open the main menu and choose System Configuration for display and accessibility options. Choose Character Configuration for interface and log controls. The current Square Enix Configuration Settings manual places Display Settings and Accessibility Settings under System Configuration, and UI Settings and Log Window Settings under Character Configuration.

Make the whole interface larger
Use Display Settings for a broad change
Display scaling is the fastest way to enlarge many menus and HUD elements at once. In System Configuration, open Display Settings and look for the UI-size or high-resolution UI controls available to your client. Square Enix’s Patch 3.2 documentation (2016) described 150% and 200% high-resolution UI choices for suitable display resolutions. Those figures belong to that Windows and Mac-era documentation; the current client may present different labels, limits, or platform coverage.
Increase the scale one step, apply it, and inspect ordinary play: a duty list, party list, hotbars, map, quest tracker, and a busy combat scene. A larger scale can improve legibility but may also make panels overlap or push information off-screen. If that happens, use per-element HUD sizing and layout instead of continually increasing the global value.
Resize only the HUD elements you need
Open HUD Layout from the System menu, select an element, and use its size control. Patch 4.1 (2017) documented element sizes of 160%, 180%, and 200%. This method is useful when chat is readable but the party list, focus target, enemy cast bar, or duty gauge is not.
Enlarge the elements that carry information you must read during play, then move or simplify less important elements so the screen remains usable. Preview the layout in normal combat rather than judging it only in the editor; a panel that looks comfortable in a quiet area can obstruct a hotbar or mechanic indicator during a duty.

| Control | What it changes | Documented values or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Display Settings high-resolution UI | Broad interface scaling | 150% and 200% were documented in Patch 3.2 for suitable resolutions |
| HUD Layout element size | One selected HUD component | 160%, 180%, and 200% were documented in Patch 4.1 |
Make chat and menu text easier to read
Increase the chat prompt font
For chat that is too small, open Character Configuration → Log Window Settings and look for the chat prompt font-size control. Patch 3.2 (2016) documented 24, 30, and 36 as Chat Prompt Font Size choices on Windows and Mac. Select the largest value you can read without losing too much log history, then send a test message and watch the chat while several message types arrive.
This control is narrower than global UI scaling: it targets the chat prompt or log text covered by the setting, not every label in the game. If your client does not show those exact numbers, use the available choices in its Log Window Settings and confirm the result in an active conversation or duty.
Check NQ/HQ and help-text rendering options
Patch 3.4 (2016) documented options to toggle between NQ and HQ text and a separate help-text toggle, including controller toggle bindings. These are text-rendering and display choices, not font-size controls. Look for them in the current text or log settings and enable the version that gives you the clearest item and explanatory text. Because the documented bindings and labels are version-specific, verify the assignment in your own client before relying on it during play.
Use the client’s higher-resolution font assets when available
Patch 5.5 (2021) reported increased font resolution for certain menus based on window size, plus higher-resolution nameplates, fly text, and pop-up text. The notes also stated that the latter improvement was unavailable with DirectX 9. On Windows and Mac, high-resolution UI assets could require a restart after changing the setting. If you change a resolution or high-resolution UI option and nothing appears different, restart the game before troubleshooting further, and check whether your graphics API or platform supports that feature.

Make the cursor and small controls easier to see
Increase mouse-cursor size
When the problem is finding the pointer rather than reading game text, open the cursor options and choose a larger pointer. Patch 2.5 (2015) documented Normal, Large, and Maximum mouse-cursor sizes for Windows and PlayStation 4. Choose Large first; Maximum is useful when the pointer disappears against bright effects but can cover a small button.
Use mouse sonar and cursor tracking
The same Patch 2.5 notes introduced mouse sonar, which indicates the cursor’s current on-screen position and can be assigned to a key, along with cursor tracking. These tools do not enlarge every label. They help you recover the pointer quickly after moving it across a busy screen or when visual effects make its position hard to distinguish. Check the current key-binding screen because the default or available assignment can vary by client.
Zoom a single window with a gamepad
Patch 3.5 (2017) documented gamepad window zoom by holding R3, the right-stick click. Use it when inspecting a small window while playing with a controller. Window zoom enlarges that panel temporarily; it is not a global text-scaling setting and will not change the size of your hotbars, chat, or nameplates.

Add non-text visual alerts where supported
Visual alerts can supplement text when a sound or a written warning is easy to miss. Patch 2.38 documented Visual Alerts under System Configuration for the Windows version, with an enable option plus size and transparency controls. Open System Configuration → Accessibility Settings in the current client and check whether Visual Alerts are offered on your platform. Do not assume the historical Windows-only implementation appears identically on PlayStation, Xbox, Mac, or other clients.

Use alert size and transparency together: an oversized, opaque alert may hide combat information, while a very transparent alert can be difficult to notice. Test it in a safe area before entering a duty and adjust until it is visible without blocking the HUD elements you enlarged.
A practical setup sequence
Apply changes in this order so you can identify which control solved a particular problem.
- Identify the failing content. Decide whether the issue is all interface text, one HUD element, chat, the pointer, or one controller window. Different symptoms require different controls.
- Set a moderate global scale. In System Configuration → Display Settings, choose the next available UI-size or high-resolution option and apply it.
- Clean up the HUD. Open HUD Layout, enlarge only the unreadable elements, and move them away from hotbars, party frames, and mechanic indicators.
- Adjust chat. In Character Configuration → Log Window Settings, select a larger chat prompt font where available. Check NQ/HQ and help-text toggles if item or explanatory text remains unclear.
- Improve pointer visibility. Set the cursor to Large or Maximum, then assign mouse sonar or cursor tracking if locating the pointer is still difficult.
- Check accessibility cues. In System Configuration → Accessibility Settings, enable and tune Visual Alerts when the option exists on your platform.
- Test in real conditions. Read a busy chat log, inspect a map and duty list, move the pointer through crowded menus, and enter a low-risk activity to confirm that enlarged elements do not overlap.
Platform and version limitations to keep in mind
Feature history is uneven. The documented coverage is summarized below; current availability still depends on the live client.

| Feature | Documented platform or condition | Source timing |
|---|---|---|
| Visual Alerts | Windows version | Patch 2.38 (2014) |

| High-resolution nameplates, fly text, and pop-up text | Not available with DirectX 9 in the cited notes | Patch 5.5 (2021) |
These entries explain why two players can follow the same instructions and see different menus. Console and PC clients can expose different controls, and later patches can rename, relocate, or replace older options.

Back up settings, but expect to redo display-specific choices
The current Configuration Settings manual distinguishes server backup from launcher backup. Server backup can preserve Accessibility Settings and transfer supported data among Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Mac, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. Display resolution, graphics quality, input device, and other environment-dependent settings are not exportable. After moving to another monitor, computer, console, or platform, recheck UI scale, HUD placement, font-resolution options, and cursor settings even if your accessibility profile restored correctly.
Troubleshoot common readability problems
The UI became larger but is now crowded
Lower the global scale one step and enlarge only the essential HUD elements through HUD Layout. Move secondary gauges, collapse unnecessary log tabs, and inspect the result in an actual duty. Global scaling is convenient, but selective sizing gives you more room to preserve a readable combat layout.
Chat is still tiny after changing the UI
Check Log Window Settings separately. Global UI scaling and chat prompt font sizing are independent controls, and one may change without the other. If the font-size values documented for Patch 3.2 are absent, use the choices shown by your current client and restart after any high-resolution UI change that requests it.

A high-resolution option has no visible effect
Confirm your display resolution and graphics API, then restart the game if the setting requires it. Patch 5.5 specifically noted a DirectX 9 limitation for certain high-resolution text improvements. Do not treat a missing option on one platform as evidence that the setting is broken on every platform.
The cursor disappears during play
Choose Large or Maximum, enable mouse sonar if available, and assign it to a key you can press without moving the pointer. If you use a controller and only one panel is difficult to inspect, hold R3 for gamepad window zoom rather than changing the entire HUD.
A PC launcher looks wrong after a Windows text-size change
Square Enix reported a Windows launcher display issue associated with text-size and high-DPI settings after Patch 7.21 and said a launcher update addressed it on April 28, 2025. That notice concerned the launcher, not a general recommendation to change Windows-wide text scaling; those operating-system settings affect other PC text as well. Update the launcher and use the in-game controls first.
Quick Recap
Which setting should you try first?
| Your symptom | Best first control | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nearly every label and panel is too small | Display Settings UI scale | Changes the broad interface at once |
| Only the party list, cast bar, or duty gauge is hard to read | HUD Layout element size | Enlarges one component without inflating the whole screen |
| Chat messages or the entry line are too small | Log Window Settings chat prompt font | Targets chat text directly |
| You lose the pointer in effects or menus | Cursor size, mouse sonar, or tracking | Improves pointer location rather than text rendering |
| A controller window is readable only when enlarged | Hold R3 for gamepad window zoom | Temporarily enlarges one window |
| Written warnings are easy to miss | Accessibility Settings visual alerts, if offered | Adds a visual cue with adjustable size and transparency |
