Sephiroth features in the original Final Fantasy VII and in several major related games. In the Remake project, he is part of the story in Final Fantasy VII Remake and is explicitly the target of Cloud’s pursuit in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. He also appears in the prequel Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion and in Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, which includes new story material about a younger Sephiroth. The third Remake project entry, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is planned for April 8, 2027; Square Enix identifies Sephiroth as its nemesis.
Which games feature Sephiroth?
The answer depends slightly on what you mean by “feature.” Sephiroth is a story presence in the original game and in Remake; he is explicitly named in Square Enix’s synopsis for Rebirth and listed among the characters in Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion. Ever Crisis includes a separate young-Sephiroth story thread. Revelation is announced as a forthcoming entry with Sephiroth as the party’s nemesis, not a game you can treat as already released.
These are not all the same kind of game. The Remake project retells and continues the main game’s story across separate installments, while Crisis Core Reunion is a prequel remaster and Ever Crisis is a chapter-based RPG spanning multiple parts of the series’ timeline. The distinctions matter if you want to follow the main story in order or find a game with a particular version of Sephiroth.
| Game | Story placement and format | What is established about Sephiroth | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII (original) | The original game | Sephiroth is part of the game’s story. | Released |
| Final Fantasy VII Remake / Remake Intergrade | First standalone Remake project installment; covers events through the party’s escape from Midgar | The story includes Cloud’s visions of a bitter enemy long thought dead. The synopsis does not name Sephiroth, so this is best described as Sephiroth story material rather than a claim about a specific scene. | Released |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Next story in the Remake project, after the party leaves Midgar | Cloud and his companions pursue the fallen hero Sephiroth. | Released |
| Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion | Remaster of Crisis Core; its story begins seven years before Final Fantasy VII | Sephiroth is explicitly listed among its characters, alongside Zack. | Released |
| Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis | Chapter-structured RPG covering key elements of the wider timeline and new story material | Includes a story thread around a young Sephiroth. | Released; availability and service status may change |
| Final Fantasy VII Revelation | Announced third Remake project entry and planned finale | Square Enix names Sephiroth as the party’s nemesis and says Sephiroth-focused story DLCs are planned. | Announced for April 8, 2027 |
How the Remake project uses Sephiroth
Remake: the Midgar installment
Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first standalone game in the Remake project. Its story covers the events through Cloud and the party’s escape from Midgar. Square Enix’s synopsis describes Cloud as haunted by visions of a bitter enemy thought long dead, but does not name that enemy in the material summarized here. In the context of the wider story and the direct Sephiroth reference in Rebirth, the game contains Sephiroth-related story material. That is a careful way to describe the connection without asserting details about a particular appearance or scene.

- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: "Graphics Mode" prioritizes 4K high-resolution graphics; "Performance Mode" prioritizes smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customizable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
- Play the brand-new episode featuring Yuffie and experience new combat and gameplay additions
Remake Intergrade is the expanded edition title associated with Remake, not a separate story installment to count alongside it. If you are making a list of the Remake project’s main entries, count Remake once.
Rebirth: pursuit after Midgar
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the next story in the project. Its official description directly names Sephiroth: after leaving Midgar, Cloud and his companions pursue him. This makes Rebirth the clearest answer if your question is specifically which Remake game explicitly identifies Sephiroth in its synopsis.
Revelation: announced, not yet released
Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the third Remake project entry on September 3, 2026, with a planned launch date of April 8, 2027. The announcement calls Sephiroth the party’s nemesis and says story DLCs featuring him are planned. As of October 13, 2026, it is an upcoming game; its release date and plans are subject to change.
The announcement makes Revelation the planned finale of the three-game Remake project, not a fourth released chapter in the story. If you are planning a playthrough now, the released sequence is Remake followed by Rebirth; Revelation belongs on the watch list until its planned launch. The announced Sephiroth-focused story DLC is an additional plan, not evidence that the game or DLC is already available.

Where the related games fit
Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion: Sephiroth in an earlier era
Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a remaster of Crisis Core, not another installment of the Remake project. Its story starts seven years before Final Fantasy VII, placing it in an earlier period of the timeline. Square Enix explicitly lists Sephiroth among its characters, with Zack also central to this prequel-era story. Choose it when you want an earlier setting rather than the next chapter after Remake.
The “seven years before” placement is a useful chronology marker, but it does not make Reunion the next game in the Remake trilogy. It tells a prequel-era story and was remastered as Reunion; for the main Remake-project sequence, continue from Remake to Rebirth instead. That distinction helps avoid mixing release editions, story chronology, and the order of the current retelling.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis: multiple timeline chapters and a younger Sephiroth
Ever Crisis is a chapter-structured RPG that revisits key elements of the Final Fantasy VII timeline while adding new story material. Its distinct young-Sephiroth thread sets it apart from simply playing another main Remake installment. Square Enix’s December 8, 2023 announcement reported more than 7 million iOS downloads since the game’s September 2023 mobile release. That figure is a historical download count for iOS through the announcement date, not a current total or a count across all platforms. Square Enix also announced availability on iOS and Android; current availability and service details can change.

Think of Ever Crisis as a separate way to engage with several strands of the franchise rather than as the next part of Cloud’s Remake-project journey. The young-Sephiroth material is one reason to choose it if you are specifically interested in a different period of his story. Its mobile availability was announced for iOS and Android, but platform support and service status are details to check close to the time you plan to play.

The original Final Fantasy VII
The original game is the starting point for the franchise’s central story, and Sephiroth is one of its defining characters. The available official franchise listing confirms the game’s place among Final Fantasy VII works, but does not itself detail Sephiroth’s role. That distinction does not make the original a spin-off or a Remake project entry: it is the original game, while Remake, Rebirth, and the announced Revelation form the separate three-part Remake project.
Which one should you play?
Pick according to the story experience you want, rather than treating every title as a numbered sequel. The table below separates the main retelling from earlier-era and multi-timeline stories.
- For the Remake project’s main sequence: start with Final Fantasy VII Remake, continue with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, then watch for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which is planned as the third entry.
- For a prequel-era story with Sephiroth: choose Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion. Its story begins seven years before the original game.
- For a chapter-based experience across the timeline: choose Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, which includes both familiar timeline elements and new material about a young Sephiroth.
- For the original story: play Final Fantasy VII. It is distinct from the Remake project’s installments.
There is no need to count Intergrade as an additional main-story chapter: it is the expanded edition title for Remake. Likewise, Crisis Core Reunion and Ever Crisis feature Sephiroth but do not replace Rebirth as the direct next story in the Remake project.

How to choose an edition or format
If you are shopping rather than just building a watch list, distinguish the story entry from its edition name. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a useful product name to search for when looking for the expanded Remake edition; it is not a separate installment. Rebirth and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion are also related physical-game options. Check that a listing matches your platform and region, and confirm what the edition includes before buying. Stock, regional versions, and current retailer listings can change.

There is also a Revelation Collector’s Edition with a statue featuring Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth. It is an announced collectible opportunity, not a reason to treat the upcoming game as released. Check the current official product information for edition contents and availability before making a purchase; no particular retailer’s inventory or price is guaranteed here.

People use “Sephiroth appears” to mean different things: a named character in a publisher description, a role in the story, a playable character, or simply a game set in the same franchise. The official descriptions summarized here support specific claims about story presence, pursuit, character listing, and young-Sephiroth material; they do not establish that Sephiroth is playable in these games. Do not infer playability from a character being named as an antagonist or included in a story.
Franchise copyright lists can also create confusion. A listing of titles such as Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, or The First Soldier establishes that they are part of the broader franchise, but inclusion on a copyright list alone does not confirm whether, or how, Sephiroth appears in each. They are therefore not included here as verified Sephiroth appearances.
For a concise count, the strongest summary is: the original Final Fantasy VII, Remake and Rebirth, Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion, and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis are released games with Sephiroth story material; Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the announced third Remake entry, planned for April 8, 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII Remake?
Yes, Remake contains Sephiroth-related story material. Square Enix’s synopsis describes Cloud’s visions of a bitter enemy long thought dead without naming Sephiroth there, so it is safest to describe him as a story presence rather than claim a specific scene based on that synopsis alone.
Does Sephiroth appear in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
Yes. Square Enix’s description directly names Sephiroth as the fallen hero pursued by Cloud and his companions after they leave Midgar.
Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation released yet?
No. As of October 13, 2026, Square Enix has announced it as the third Remake project entry for April 8, 2027. The date is planned and could change.

Which Final Fantasy VII game features a young Sephiroth?
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis includes new story material centered partly on a young Sephiroth. It is a chapter-structured RPG covering multiple parts of the wider timeline, not a single Remake-project installment.
Is Crisis Core Reunion part of the Remake trilogy?
No. Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a remaster of the prequel Crisis Core. Its story begins seven years before the original Final Fantasy VII, while the Remake project is Remake, Rebirth, and the upcoming Revelation.
Is Sephiroth playable in these games?
The official descriptions cited here establish his story presence, role, or character listing, but do not establish that he is playable. A character appearing in a synopsis or being named as an antagonist is not enough to conclude that.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Sephiroth features in the original Final Fantasy VII, Remake, Rebirth, Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion, and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis. The Remake project’s next planned entry, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is scheduled for April 8, 2027, with Sephiroth identified as its nemesis. Count Intergrade as an expanded edition of Remake, not another main installment.
