Change the workstation fit before buying a different keyboard. Set the chair and work surface so your shoulders relax, elbows stay near your sides, and the keyboard is around elbow height. Place it directly in front of you and close enough to avoid reaching. Then adjust tilt until your wrists are straight and aligned with your forearms. If the desk cannot reach that position, add an adjustable tray; consider a compact, split or tented keyboard only when the basic setup still does not fit.

Start with the workstation, not the keyboard

A keyboard cannot correct every mismatch between your body and a fixed desk. OSHA and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) both treat the chair, work surface and keyboard as one system. The target posture is practical rather than aesthetic: relaxed shoulders, elbows close to the torso, forearms approximately parallel with the floor, and wrists straight in line with the forearms. OSHA’s keyboard quick tip states, “Your wrists should be straight and in-line with your forearms.” See OSHA’s keyboard guidance and CCOHS’s keyboard selection and use guidance.

Set chair and work-surface height

Raise or lower the chair and, where possible, the desk or keyboard surface until your shoulders can drop naturally instead of lifting toward your ears. Your elbows should hang near your sides rather than flare outward. The keyboard should be roughly level with the elbows; a very high surface usually forces the shoulders up, while a very low one can encourage wrist extension or leaning.

Keep enough clearance beneath the surface for your thighs, knees and feet. Do not solve a high desk by raising the chair so far that your feet dangle; use a stable foot support if needed while preserving the shoulder and elbow position. The keyboard position is successful only when the whole seated posture remains comfortable.

Use an adjustable tray when the desk is fixed

If the desktop is permanently too high or too low, an adjustable keyboard tray is the most direct hardware intervention. OSHA recommends a tray that can change height and tilt while leaving clearance for legs and feet. Mounting the tray under the desk can also free space on the work surface, but the tray must not wobble or force the keyboard too far from your body. Adjust the tray after setting the chair, then recheck shoulder and elbow position.

Bring the keyboard into your reach

Center the keyboard on the body you use for typing, not necessarily on the desk or monitor. Its middle should be in front of your torso so neither hand has to angle sharply sideways. Slide it toward you until your elbows remain near your sides and your forearms are approximately parallel with the floor. If you have to lean forward to reach the home row, the keyboard is too far away.

Leave room for the mouse or other pointing device without pushing it into a distant corner. A wide keyboard can force the mouse outward, making the right shoulder reach repeatedly. Moving the keyboard and mouse together, or choosing a shorter layout, can keep both devices within a compact working area. CCOHS specifically identifies reduced reach and extra mouse space as reasons some users may prefer a compact keyboard.

Tune tilt for a neutral wrist

There is no universally correct keyboard angle. Change the feet or tray tilt only to keep the backs of your hands level with your forearms. For some people, lowering the rear of the keyboard helps; others need the front or rear elevated. OSHA advises raising or lowering the keyboard as needed for neutral wrists and warns against using built-in feet when they increase wrist bend. CCOHS likewise says to elevate either the back or front according to the user’s neutral posture.

Watch your wrists from the side and from above while typing. A sharp upward bend, downward sag, or sideways angle means the height, distance or tilt still needs adjustment. Do not chase a particular number of degrees: neither OSHA nor CCOHS specifies one angle that suits everyone.

  1. Set the chair so your feet are supported and your shoulders can relax.
  2. Adjust the desk or keyboard tray until the keyboard is approximately at elbow height, with leg clearance underneath.
  3. Place the keyboard directly in front of your torso.
  4. Slide it close enough that elbows stay beside the body and you do not lean forward.
  5. Place the mouse or pointing device beside the keyboard, within the same relaxed reach.
  6. Type a normal passage for several minutes and observe wrist alignment rather than forcing your hands to look a certain way.
  7. Change the keyboard tilt in small increments until wrists stay straight and in line with the forearms.
  8. Recheck the chair, shoulders and elbows after the tilt change; a tray movement can alter the entire posture.

How to tell whether the adjustment worked

  • Shoulders: They remain down and relaxed instead of elevated or held forward.
  • Elbows: They stay close to your sides, without repeated outward winging.
  • Forearms: They are approximately parallel with the floor during ordinary typing.
  • Wrists: They remain straight and aligned with the forearms, without a persistent up, down or sideways bend.
  • Reach: You can use the home row without leaning or stretching your arms.
  • Mouse position: The pointing device is close enough that it does not pull one shoulder forward.
  • Key action: You can press the keys comfortably, without excessive force or frequent accidental repeats.

Check the position while performing the work you actually do. A setup that feels neutral for short emails may fail during a long coding session, spreadsheet entry or gaming session because the hands travel to different key clusters. Recheck after changing monitor position, chair height or desk accessories.

When a different keyboard design is worth trying

Alternative designs are fit options, not guaranteed injury-prevention treatments. OSHA says they may help users maintain neutral wrist postures, but available evidence does not conclusively show that they prevent discomfort or injury. CCOHS also emphasizes that there is no single best keyboard for every person. Try a design when the height, distance and tilt adjustments are already as close as your workstation allows and a specific reach or alignment problem remains.

Option Problem it may address What to verify during use Important limitation
Standard full-size keyboard You can keep both wrists straight and the mouse close without reaching. Shoulders stay relaxed and elbows remain near the body. Its width may push the mouse farther away.
Compact or shorter keyboard Overreaching or insufficient room for the mouse. The reduced layout does not make you twist or hunt for frequently used keys. Different key locations can create new reaches while you learn them.
Split keyboard Your hands need different spacing or angles to stay comfortable. Each half can be placed so both forearms and wrists remain neutral. It requires adaptation and is not proven to prevent injury.
Tented keyboard You want a more neutral arm and hand orientation than a flat board allows. The central rise does not lift the shoulders or create sideways wrist bends. The useful height and angle vary by person; evidence does not establish a universal benefit.
Adjustable keyboard tray The fixed desktop prevents a suitable keyboard height or tilt. The tray is stable, leaves leg clearance and keeps the keyboard close. It cannot compensate for a chair that leaves the feet unsupported or a desk that blocks the thighs.
Palm rest You want support during pauses between keystrokes. It contacts the heel of the palm without pinning the wrist. It is optional and cannot replace correct height, reach or tilt.

Compact, split and tented layouts: choosing by fit

Choose compact when reach and mouse placement are the issue

A shorter keyboard removes unused width and can let the mouse sit nearer the body. This is useful when a number pad or other side section repeatedly pushes your pointing hand outward. Before committing, confirm that the layout still gives you comfortable access to the keys your work requires. A compact board that makes you twist to reach navigation or number keys may trade one reach for another.

Choose split when each hand needs its own position

A split keyboard lets you move the two halves independently. You can narrow or widen the gap, rotate each half and align them with the natural direction of the forearms. Start with a modest separation and adjust while watching for straight wrists and relaxed shoulders. The goal is a posture that fits your body and tasks, not a dramatic separation.

Consider tenting for arm alignment

CCOHS suggests tenting as an option for users seeking a neutral arm position. Tenting raises the inner edges of a split or adjustable keyboard. Use the smallest angle that improves alignment; excessive height can make the shoulders lift or require more force to reach the upper rows. Evaluate the complete posture while typing, not the keyboard’s appearance.

Use a palm or wrist rest safely

A support is optional. OSHA’s wrist and palm support guidance says your hands should move freely above the rest while typing. When you pause and rest, the pad should contact the heel of the palm rather than pressing directly into the wrist. Keep the support close enough to avoid reaching forward, and choose one that does not force the hands upward.

If a rest makes you brace, bend or immobilize the wrists, remove it and correct the keyboard height, distance or tilt instead. A padded surface cannot offset a desk that is too high. Treat the rest as part of a coordinated setup, not as a standalone ergonomic fix.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you notice Likely setup issue Adjustment to try first
Shoulders feel raised or tired Keyboard surface is too high, or the chair is too low relative to the desk. Lower the keyboard surface or raise the chair while keeping feet supported; use a tray if the desk is fixed.
You lean toward the screen or keyboard The keyboard is too far away. Slide it toward you and keep the mouse beside it.
One wrist bends sideways The keyboard is off-center or too wide for the available space. Center it on your torso; consider a shorter or split layout if the mouse and hands still cannot fit.
Wrists bend upward while typing The keyboard is too high or its rear feet create too much slope. Lower the surface or reduce the tilt until the wrists align with the forearms.
Wrists bend downward The front edge is too high, or the keyboard is too close for your hand position. Adjust front or rear elevation and move the keyboard slightly until the hands are level.
Mouse use pulls one shoulder forward The keyboard’s footprint leaves the mouse too far to the side. Move both devices closer or test a compact keyboard.
Rest causes pressure at the wrist The pad is too high, too far forward or being used during active typing. Let the hands float while typing; use the pad only under the palm heel during pauses, or remove it.

How to compare two keyboards before keeping one

Evaluate both designs in the same chair, at the same desk height and with the same work tasks. A product label such as ergonomic or natural does not establish that it will fit you. Use these four comparison questions:

  1. Wrist alignment: Can both hands stay straight with the forearms during ordinary typing?
  2. Shoulder and elbow position: Do shoulders remain relaxed and elbows stay near the body?
  3. Footprint: Does the keyboard leave enough room to keep the mouse close without reaching?
  4. Key control: Can you press the keys comfortably without excessive force or accidental repeats?

These criteria reflect the positioning and selection principles in OSHA’s keyboard guidance and CCOHS’s guidance. If one design improves wrist alignment but makes your shoulders lift, it is not a complete solution; continue adjusting the workstation or choose another layout.

What the guidance does—and does not—claim

Official guidance supports adjusting the workstation to maintain neutral posture and trying alternative designs when a basic keyboard cannot be positioned comfortably. It does not prescribe one universal keyboard angle, one ideal layout or a guaranteed injury-prevention product. OSHA explicitly notes that evidence for alternative keyboard designs is not conclusive on preventing discomfort or injury. CCOHS similarly presents compact, split and tented designs as choices to consider for individual fit.

For a secondary ergonomics perspective on evaluating workstation products, see Cornell University’s Computer Workstation Ergonomics Guidelines (last revised June 13, 2015). Use any product guidance alongside your own posture and task requirements rather than treating a design name as a medical recommendation.

When to reassess the setup

Reassess whenever you change the desk, chair, monitor, keyboard layout or the type of work you perform. A new monitor stand can alter your chair height; a compact keyboard can change mouse placement; and a split board can require a different tray width. After each change, run the posture checks again: relaxed shoulders, elbows near the body, close reach, and wrists straight in line with the forearms. If you cannot achieve those conditions with your current desk, an adjustable tray is the logical next hardware step.
