Home Assistant, Grafana, and Immich can all become more valuable over time, but not because Docker improves a container just by keeping it running. They become more useful when they collect information or configuration you care about, and when that state is stored somewhere that survives container replacement.

What makes a Docker service more useful over time?

Some self-hosted apps gain value from accumulated history, a growing personal library, or saved configuration. That value depends on three things: the application records the right information, its data is kept in persistent storage, and you continue to maintain the deployment.

A container’s writable filesystem is not automatically a durable archive. A service may run for months yet lose its changes when the container is removed if those changes were never stored in a persistent volume, bind mount, database, or other durable location.

Service What can accumulate What needs to persist
Home Assistant Eligible sensor history and long-term statistics Recorder data and the storage holding it
Grafana Dashboards, users, and configuration Its database and configuration data, stored outside the disposable container filesystem
Immich Your personal media library and its application state Data across Postgres, Redis, and the filesystem

Home Assistant: sensor history that answers questions later

Home Assistant can turn a stream of sensor readings into context for later comparisons—for example, looking back at energy use or temperature over months and years. Its long-term statistics documentation says state changes are saved by default and retained for 10 days. For qualifying sensors, short-term statistics are recorded every 5 minutes and long-term statistics hourly. Short-term statistics follow state-history retention; long-term statistics are not automatically deleted.

Not every entity qualifies

Long-term statistics require a recorded numeric sensor with a state class. If an entity is excluded from the recorder, statistics are not created for it. Measurement sensors can provide averages, minimums, and maximums; total and total-increasing sensors can provide totals. A unit change that cannot be converted can interrupt statistics until the issue is corrected.

This history is useful only if the sensors you care about are eligible and included, and the data remains in storage. Statistics can be removed manually, so “not automatically deleted” does not mean indestructible. Home Assistant Container also runs on a Linux system you provide and maintain, as its FAQ explains.

Grafana: saved dashboards survive container replacement only with persistence

Grafana’s Docker image uses an embedded SQLite database by default for configuration, users, dashboards, and related data. Grafana Labs’ Docker setup documentation warns that data written only to the container filesystem lasts only as long as that container. Remove the container and those changes are discarded.

Use a Docker volume or bind mount for the relevant Grafana data so that replacing the container does not also discard your dashboards and configuration. This is what makes a saved monitoring setup more useful over time: not uptime by itself, but useful work retained across routine maintenance.

Immich: a personal library with supporting application state

A self-hosted photo and video library can become more valuable as it holds more of your collection. Immich’s documentation says its application state is distributed across Postgres, Redis, and the filesystem, so keeping only one location would not preserve the whole service.

Immich also supports Prometheus-compatible performance metrics that can be visualized in Grafana, and structured JSON logging for log aggregation tools. Its monitoring guide and scaling guide describe these operational capabilities. The documented facts establish storage architecture and monitoring support; they do not quantify how search, recognition, or other features improve simply with time.

Check storage compatibility

Immich’s requirements page says the Postgres data location must use a filesystem that supports ownership and permissions. It lists EXT2/3/4, ZFS, APFS, BTRFS, and XFS as examples. Treat that as a compatibility requirement to verify against the current documentation and your deployment—not as a universal recommendation for one filesystem.

Plan for persistence, backups, and maintenance

Persistent storage is part of the service design, whether that means a local disk, NAS storage, a Docker volume, or bind-mounted paths. Choose storage for the application’s requirements and your workload. The documentation cited here establishes the need to retain data, but it does not prescribe a drive, capacity, RAID arrangement, NAS, or backup plan.

Best Value
  • Identify every stateful location the application uses, including database and filesystem paths.
  • Keep important data outside a container’s disposable writable layer.
  • Back up the data that matters and periodically confirm you can restore it.
  • Do not treat redundancy as a substitute for a backup: a redundant disk arrangement can still preserve accidental deletion or other unwanted changes.
  • Keep the host, storage, and application maintained; a long-running service is not automatically a safe or healthy one.
