Docker alternatives for local Postgres dev fall into three different categories: another container runtime, a host-native PostgreSQL installation, or a test library that creates disposable databases. The right choice depends on whether your project already expects containers, whether you need several isolated environments, and whether the database is for interactive work or automated tests.

For a container-based stack, Supabase lists Podman, OrbStack, Rancher Desktop and Colima as Docker-compatible options. For a Supabase project on supported hardware, its experimental native runtime can run services as host processes without a container engine. If you only need PostgreSQL on a Mac, Postgres.app or Homebrew is simpler. Testcontainers is useful for integration tests, but it still requires a Docker-API-compatible runtime. This guide separates those choices so you can select a setup without confusing a runtime replacement with a database installation.

Start with the decision that matters

Ask what you are replacing before installing anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Container engine: You want to keep Compose files, images, mounts and networked services, but Docker Desktop is unavailable or undesirable.
  • Database server: You need a local PostgreSQL instance and do not need the rest of a containerized application stack.
  • Test dependency manager: Your test suite should start a real PostgreSQL instance for each run or test class and remove it afterward.

These are not interchangeable. Podman, OrbStack, Rancher Desktop and Colima replace the container-management layer while retaining the container model. Postgres.app and Homebrew install PostgreSQL directly on macOS. Supabase’s native runtime removes the container engine for a particular Supabase local stack, but it is experimental and has narrower platform support. Testcontainers automates containerized services from code; it does not provide a Docker-free server.

There is no evidence-based speed ranking among these choices. The documentation establishes compatibility, isolation and platform facts, not a fair benchmark across machines and workloads. Measure your own startup time, memory use and query performance if those numbers affect the decision.

Comparison at a glance

Approach Best fit Container engine required? Platform and runtime facts Important trade-off
Podman A project that already expects Docker-compatible containers Yes, Podman supplies the container runtime Named by Supabase as a local-stack option; verify the project’s Compose, mount and networking requirements Still a container workflow, so images, networking and volumes remain part of operations
OrbStack macOS developers wanting Docker and Compose tooling with another runtime Yes OrbStack documents Docker and Compose tooling for macOS; Supabase lists it among compatible choices macOS-focused; compatibility must be checked against the application stack
Rancher Desktop Teams needing a desktop-managed container environment Yes Listed by Supabase for its local development workflow Replaces the runtime layer, not the container architecture
Colima Developers who prefer a lightweight, configurable container runtime Yes Listed by Supabase as a Docker-compatible local option Project-specific Compose, filesystem and architecture checks are still required
Supabase native runtime A Supabase project on supported Linux or Apple silicon macOS without a container daemon No, when the experimental stack functionality is enabled Experimental; Linux amd64/arm64 and Apple silicon macOS supported; Windows and Intel Mac unsupported Host processes share more state and isolation is weaker across projects; runtime cannot be changed in place with data conversion
Postgres.app Standalone PostgreSQL on macOS with an app-based lifecycle No Opening the menu-bar app starts the server; closing it stops the server macOS only; application services and data directories are managed separately from a container stack
Homebrew PostgreSQL Standalone PostgreSQL managed through macOS package and service tools No The PostgreSQL project documents Homebrew and versioned formula examples You must make the major version, service state, data directory and port explicit
Testcontainers Automated integration tests using real PostgreSQL instances Yes, a Docker-API-compatible runtime Libraries launch real services in containers and remove them after use Not a persistent interactive database and not a runtime-independent solution

Supabase’s list describes supported choices for its workflow, not a universal compatibility guarantee for every Compose project. Check the application project’s own documentation before changing runtimes.

When a Docker-compatible runtime is the right answer

Choose a container runtime when your repository already contains a Compose file, several dependent services, image-specific extensions, or scripts that assume container names and networks. In that situation, a native PostgreSQL install can create more work: you must reproduce service discovery, credentials, migrations and extension versions yourself.

Podman

Podman is the most direct conceptual replacement when you want a container-oriented workflow without Docker Desktop. Supabase names it as an option for local development. Treat it as a runtime substitution, not as a change to your application’s deployment model: containers, images, volumes, port mappings and network behavior still matter.

Before switching, run the project’s normal development and test commands against a clean checkout. Confirm that its Compose implementation supports the syntax in your files, that bind mounts preserve expected file permissions, and that any scripts invoking a Docker-compatible API can connect to Podman. Verify image architecture as well, especially when an Apple silicon machine pulls images built primarily for amd64.

OrbStack

OrbStack is a macOS-oriented Docker-compatible runtime. Its quick-start documentation covers Docker and Compose tooling for macOS (OrbStack Quick Start), and Supabase includes it in the runtime choices for local development. It is appropriate when the project should continue using container commands and Compose while the underlying desktop runtime changes.

Do not assume that a runtime listed by Supabase will behave identically for an unrelated stack. Check privileged operations, volume performance, file watching, network aliases and any architecture-specific images in your own project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rancher Desktop

Rancher Desktop is another container-manager option named in Supabase’s local-development documentation. It can suit teams that want a desktop environment managed separately from Docker Desktop while retaining a container workflow. Establish a team baseline for the runtime version and configuration; otherwise developers can receive different behavior from the same Compose file.

Colima

Colima is also listed by Supabase as a compatible local runtime. It is often selected by developers who want a configurable, command-driven environment rather than a heavyweight desktop application. The same checks apply: Compose feature coverage, mount behavior, networking, image architecture and the project’s expected Docker API must all be validated.

A practical compatibility check

  1. Read the project’s setup documentation and record the required Compose features, exposed ports, volumes, health checks and architecture assumptions.
  2. Install one supported runtime and start the stack from a clean working tree.
  3. Confirm that every service reaches its dependencies by the configured service name, not by an accidental host-only address.
  4. Run database migrations and seed scripts, then restart the runtime to verify that persistent volumes retain the expected data.
  5. Run the application’s test suite and a representative development workflow, including file reload or watch mode if used.
  6. Document the runtime version and configuration in the team setup guide so a second developer can reproduce it.

If any of these checks fail, the issue may be a project assumption rather than a defect in the alternative runtime. Keep the original supported path available until the stack has passed its full development and CI checks.

Supabase’s native runtime: Docker-free, but experimental

Supabase documents an experimental native runtime that runs the local stack’s services as processes on the host rather than in containers. The current documentation supports Linux on amd64 or arm64 and macOS on Apple silicon. Windows and Intel-based Macs are unsupported. The ordinary supabase start workflow uses Docker unless the experimental stack functionality is enabled. Read the current requirements in Supabase’s Docker and native runtimes guide before relying on it, because the feature and its requirements may change.

Who should consider it

  • A Linux development or CI environment where a container daemon cannot be installed.
  • An Apple silicon Mac where a Supabase project is the primary local stack.
  • A short-lived sandbox where host-process execution is acceptable and only one project needs to run at a time.

It is not a general replacement for Docker-compatible containers. If your application includes unrelated services, custom images or Compose-only behavior, the native runtime may not represent the production topology.

Isolation differences

Containers give separate projects their own network namespaces and filesystems. Native projects share host process tables and file locks. Supabase therefore recommends Docker when you run multiple local projects. A native project can collide with another project over ports, process names, lock files or shared host paths even when the application configurations appear separate.

Version and migration constraints

The multiple-project documentation specifies Supabase CLI v2.119.0 or later for the experimental stack commands. A Supabase project records its runtime when it is created, and the CLI does not convert data when moving to another runtime. Switching an existing project is therefore not an in-place toggle with automatic data migration; a new project is required. Plan exports, schema migrations and seed data before adopting a runtime that you may later abandon.

For multiple local projects, follow the current procedure in Supabase’s running-multiple-projects guide and keep each project’s ports, data location and CLI configuration explicit. Re-check the documentation at publication time because the native runtime is experimental.

Postgres.app

Postgres.app is a menu-bar application. Opening it starts the PostgreSQL server; closing it stops the server. That lifecycle is convenient for a developer who wants the database available only during work sessions and does not need a full multi-service stack.

Use the major version that matches the application’s supported version and extensions. The macOS packages page currently lists PostgreSQL 18 for macOS 13 or later on both Intel and Apple silicon. That listing is time-sensitive: verify the page for the exact version and macOS release before installing, particularly if your project targets an older major version.

Homebrew

Homebrew provides a package-manager workflow and supports versioned PostgreSQL formula examples in the PostgreSQL documentation. This is useful when your team already manages development services through Homebrew and wants service start, stop and upgrade operations to be scriptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not let the package manager hide which server is active. Record the installed major version, the data directory, the service name and the port. A shell may find one psql client while the server process belongs to another installation. Confirm both client and server versions before applying migrations.

Clusters, ports and concurrent instances

The PostgreSQL server documentation explains that each server instance uses one database cluster. Running concurrent instances requires different data areas and different ports (PostgreSQL 18: postgres). This matters when two projects require different major versions or incompatible extensions.

For each project, write down:

  • the PostgreSQL major version and required extensions;
  • the cluster’s data directory and backup location;
  • the listening port and connection string;
  • which operating-system account owns the files;
  • the command or app action that starts and stops the instance.

Use separate clusters rather than pointing two major versions at the same data directory. A major-version upgrade requires the appropriate PostgreSQL upgrade process; changing the client binary alone does not convert the cluster.

Testcontainers is for tests, not a Docker replacement

Testcontainers libraries let application code launch real services in containers for integration tests. Docker’s documentation describes the model and the requirement for a Docker-API-compatible runtime (Docker Testcontainers documentation). PostgreSQL can therefore be created as a disposable test dependency with the same database engine your application uses in production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is valuable when mocks hide SQL behavior, extension support or transaction semantics. A test can start a clean database, apply migrations, run assertions and remove the environment without leaving a developer’s long-lived cluster polluted with test data.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The limitation is fundamental: Testcontainers still needs a compatible container runtime. Installing the library does not eliminate that dependency, and it is not intended to be the persistent database developers use for interactive sessions. If your requirement is “no Docker-compatible daemon,” choose a native PostgreSQL installation or, for a supported Supabase stack, evaluate the native runtime instead.

Choosing by scenario

Only PostgreSQL on an Apple silicon Mac

Start with Postgres.app for the simplest visible lifecycle or Homebrew if your team prefers package-managed services. Match the project’s major version, extensions and connection port. A container runtime is unnecessary unless the application also depends on other containerized services.

A Compose-based application stack

Use a Docker-compatible runtime first. Podman, OrbStack, Rancher Desktop and Colima are the options Supabase names for its local workflow, but your project’s own documentation remains authoritative. Preserve the existing images and Compose configuration until the alternative has passed migration, networking, persistence and test checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several Supabase projects at once

Prefer the container runtime path because containers provide project-level network and filesystem isolation. The native runtime shares host process state and file locks, making simultaneous projects more prone to collisions.

A Linux CI sandbox without a container daemon

If the workload is a Supabase project and the machine is Linux amd64 or arm64, investigate the experimental native runtime. Confirm the required CLI version and understand that the runtime is recorded at project creation. For a general application stack, a Docker-API-compatible runtime may still be necessary.

Real PostgreSQL in automated integration tests

Use Testcontainers when the team accepts a container runtime and wants tests to manage disposable services in code. Keep a separate interactive development database so test teardown cannot remove working data.

Data, version and extension parity

The runtime is only one part of local-to-cloud compatibility. Before committing to an alternative, compare the database properties that affect application behavior:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Major version: Use the same PostgreSQL major version as the deployment target where possible. Features, planner behavior and defaults can differ between majors.
  • Extensions: Verify that every required extension is available in the chosen image or native package. A native install may not include an extension that was present in a project image.
  • Locale and encoding: Keep database encoding, collation and locale consistent with production when sorting and text comparisons matter.
  • Authentication: Reproduce the connection role, password handling and SSL expectations without committing secrets to the repository.
  • Migration order: Apply migrations to a clean database and test rollback or recovery procedures before moving existing local data.
  • Persistence: Identify whether data lives in a named volume, bind mount or native cluster directory, and back it up before changing runtimes.

For a Supabase project, do not assume that changing the runtime will transform its existing data. The documented behavior requires a new project to switch runtimes, so export or recreate the schema and data deliberately.

Keep a local server private

A local database should normally listen only on the loopback interface. Docker’s PostgreSQL setup guidance recommends localhost-only binding for local development and explains that binding all interfaces makes the server reachable from other devices that can reach the host (Docker PostgreSQL immediate setup and data persistence). The same exposure principle applies to native PostgreSQL and other runtimes.

  • Bind to loopback unless another machine genuinely needs access.
  • Use a development-only role and password; never reuse production credentials.
  • Check the effective listening address and port after installing or changing a runtime.
  • Review firewall and runtime forwarding rules when a service unexpectedly becomes reachable from a network.
  • Remove test databases and unused volumes when they contain sensitive local data.

Troubleshooting common failures

The application cannot reach PostgreSQL

First identify the topology. A containerized application should normally connect to the database by its service name on the container network, while a native application usually connects through a host address and port. Check the connection string, the listening port and whether the database process is running. Do not fix a network-name error by exposing the database on every interface.

The wrong PostgreSQL version answers

Inspect the server process and its data directory, not only the psql --version output. Multiple Homebrew formulae, Postgres.app versions and container images can leave several clients or servers installed. Stop the unintended instance, select the intended cluster and update the project’s connection settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two projects collide

With native PostgreSQL, assign each cluster a different data directory and port. With Supabase’s native runtime, remember that host process tables and file locks are shared. For several Supabase projects, use containers as Supabase recommends so each project receives separate network and filesystem namespaces.

Data disappeared after changing runtimes

Check whether the old data lived in a container volume, a bind mount or a native cluster directory. A new runtime will not automatically discover another runtime’s storage, and Supabase does not convert data when a project’s runtime changes. Restore from a known backup or export and import the data using the project’s migration procedure.

Compose starts but a service behaves differently

Compare the alternative runtime’s support for the Compose features your project uses: health checks, profiles, bind mounts, privileged settings, network aliases and architecture-specific images. Reproduce the failure with a minimal service and consult the runtime’s current documentation before changing application code.

A migration checklist

  1. Classify the requirement as container runtime, native PostgreSQL or test dependency.
  2. Record the production PostgreSQL major version, extensions, locale, port and connection behavior.
  3. Back up or export any local data that matters.
  4. Install the alternative on a supported operating system and record its version.
  5. Start a clean database or stack and apply the complete migration set.
  6. Run application tests, extension checks, background jobs and representative queries.
  7. Test a restart and confirm that persistent data returns.
  8. Check listening addresses and credentials so the database remains private.
  9. Document startup, shutdown, reset, backup and recovery steps for the team.
  10. Keep the previous setup available until CI and a second developer have reproduced the workflow.

How local development moves to a cloud database

The safest path is to make the database contract portable rather than relying on a particular local runtime. Store schema changes as migrations, seed only non-sensitive data, configure the application through environment variables, and test against the same PostgreSQL major version and extensions used by the cloud target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A native local server can therefore deploy to a managed PostgreSQL service just as a containerized local server can. What must move is the schema, required data and configuration—not the local data directory or the desktop runtime itself. Treat local data as disposable unless it is backed up and explicitly needed.

When a Supabase project uses the native runtime, follow Supabase’s project and migration rules rather than assuming that a container volume can be copied into a hosted project. The runtime choice affects local orchestration; your migrations and seed process should remain the reproducible bridge to deployment.

Bottom line

For an existing container stack, choose a Docker-compatible runtime and validate it against the project’s own Compose and image requirements. For a standalone PostgreSQL server on macOS, Postgres.app is the simplest app lifecycle and Homebrew is the package-managed alternative. For Supabase on supported Linux or Apple silicon macOS, the experimental native runtime removes the container engine but sacrifices isolation and cannot be switched in place with data conversion. For integration tests, Testcontainers is useful only when a compatible container runtime is available. Make version, extension, storage, port and network exposure explicit whichever path you choose.
