For most owners of ordinary DeWalt 20V MAX tools, a compatible standard battery is the sensible place to start. POWERSTACK and POWERPACK are alternative 20V battery designs that may suit particular performance or size needs; FLEXVOLT is different, switching voltage for compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. Choose by tool compatibility, runtime, pack size and the work you do—not by assuming the premium label is automatically better.
First, separate battery cell design from the tool platform
DeWalt names several battery technologies, but they are not all competing versions of the same thing. Standard cylindrical cells, POWERSTACK pouch cells and POWERPACK tabless cells describe battery construction. 20V MAX and 60V MAX describe compatible tool-and-battery voltage systems. FLEXVOLT describes a battery system that changes voltage to work with compatible tools.
| Battery option | What the name describes | Tool system |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 20V MAX | Conventional cylindrical-cell battery design | 20V MAX |
| XR POWERSTACK | Pouch-cell battery design | 20V MAX-compatible |
| XR POWERPACK | Tabless-cell battery design | Part of DeWalt’s 20V MAX XR portfolio |
| FLEXVOLT | Battery system that switches voltage for compatible tools | Compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools; some 120V MAX applications use two 60V MAX batteries |
DeWalt says 20V MAX refers to maximum initial voltage without a workload and gives 18V as nominal voltage. That label does not mean 20V MAX and 18V tools are separate platforms. DeWalt’s 20V MAX explanation describes the naming distinction.

What each option offers—and when it matters
Standard 20V MAX batteries
A standard compatible battery is the baseline for routine 20V MAX work. If your tool already delivers the performance and runtime you need, paying more for a different cell design may not solve a real problem. Compare capacity, size, weight and cost for the exact battery model rather than treating all standard packs as identical.

XR POWERSTACK pouch cells
POWERSTACK is a 20V MAX-compatible pouch-cell design. DeWalt describes its POWERSTACK packs as “Engineered with pouch cell technology” and says they are compatible with 20V MAX tools. The product page advertises higher power and longer lifespan against a specific standard battery comparator; these are DeWalt claims, not independent head-to-head findings. Check the exact pack and comparator on the product page before using a percentage to guide a purchase. See DeWalt’s DCBP034 POWERSTACK details.
XR POWERPACK tabless cells
POWERPACK is another 20V MAX XR battery option, built around tabless-cell technology rather than POWERSTACK’s pouch cells. DeWalt introduced it in 2024 as part of its next-generation 20V MAX XR portfolio. Its name does not denote a new tool-voltage platform, so judge a particular pack by its capacity, weight, price and the demands of your tool. DeWalt’s POWERPACK announcement describes the tabless-cell design.

- Part of the 20V MAX* system - these batteries are compatible with 20V MAX* tools and chargers.
FLEXVOLT voltage switching
FLEXVOLT is not a third cell construction to compare directly with pouch or tabless cells. DeWalt says its batteries automatically switch voltage when moved among compatible tools, supporting 20V MAX and 60V MAX systems. This can make a FLEXVOLT pack useful if you own compatible 60V equipment and want battery sharing across systems. A larger FLEXVOLT pack may also provide more runtime in 20V use, but the trade-off in price, size and weight depends on the specific model. DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT system page explains the switching feature.
How to choose a battery for your tools
- Identify the exact tool model. Check the tool manual or product page for compatible battery types. Do not infer compatibility from a battery family name alone.
- Check the charger separately. Confirm the battery model is supported by your charger. For example, DeWalt lists the DCB612 12Ah FLEXVOLT pack as compatible with 20V MAX chargers, but that specification should not be assumed for every battery and charger. Check the DCB612 product details.
- Decide whether runtime or handling is the problem. More capacity can mean longer runtime, but a bigger or heavier pack may be less convenient for overhead work or prolonged use. Compare the physical specifications of the exact models you are considering.
- Match the cell design to a real need. Consider POWERSTACK or POWERPACK if their specific pack characteristics and manufacturer claims address a performance or form-factor need in your work. Do not assume either is an automatic upgrade for every tool.
- Pay for FLEXVOLT’s range when you can use it. If you own compatible 60V MAX tools, the voltage-switching feature may be useful. If you only use 20V MAX tools, compare the specific pack’s runtime, weight and price against a standard 20V battery before paying extra.
What DeWalt’s performance numbers do—and don’t—tell you
Product-page percentages apply to named comparisons, not to every battery, tool or task. DeWalt advertises POWERSTACK power and lifespan advantages against a specified standard pack, and its DCB612 page claims up to six times the runtime of a DCB201 1.5Ah battery when used with 20V MAX tools. That six-times figure is DeWalt’s claim for that comparison, not a universal runtime multiplier. See the DCB612 claim and comparator.

No independent head-to-head comparison across standard cylindrical, POWERSTACK pouch and POWERPACK tabless designs is established here. Treat comparative percentages as manufacturer claims and weigh them against your own tool’s requirements and the exact pack specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line for a 20V MAX owner
Start with a standard compatible battery if your current 20V MAX tools meet your needs. Choose POWERSTACK or POWERPACK only when the specific pack’s size or performance proposition makes a difference for your work. Choose FLEXVOLT when its compatibility with your 60V MAX equipment—or a model-specific runtime benefit—justifies its added cost and bulk. Always verify the precise battery and charger models before buying.
