Amazon Leo internet requires an Amazon Leo customer terminal—Leo Nano, Leo Pro, or Leo Ultra. A phone, laptop, television, game console, or ordinary Wi-Fi router cannot replace that satellite terminal. Amazon has not yet published a supported list of third-party routers, Ethernet handoff specifications, bridge mode, VLAN requirements, or mesh-system compatibility, so claims that a particular router or eero model is officially supported are premature.

What actually connects to Amazon Leo?

Amazon Leo is a low-Earth-orbit satellite network formerly known as Project Kuiper. Its service architecture has three parts: ground infrastructure, satellites, and customer terminals. The terminal is the equipment that communicates with the satellite network. Amazon says its Leo Nano, Leo Pro, and Leo Ultra antennas combine the radio antenna and processing hardware in a compact system.

That distinction answers the most common “which devices work?” question. Your phone, computer, smart television, streaming player, game console, printer, and other household devices would be end-user equipment on the local network behind the Leo terminal. They are not satellite terminals and cannot connect to Leo by themselves. A separate Wi-Fi router might distribute the connection indoors, but Amazon has not documented which third-party routers will work.

Amazon’s three customer terminals

Amazon has announced three terminal classes for different operating environments. The published throughput figures are maximums from limited preliminary testing, not guaranteed service speeds. Amazon says actual performance can vary with geography, weather, Wi-Fi performance, plan availability, network congestion, and policy.

Terminal Published physical details Published maximum throughput Intended setting
Leo Nano 7 × 7 inches; 2.2 pounds Up to 100 Mbps download Portable use, including 4K streaming, gaming, and video calls
Leo Pro 11 × 11 inches; 5.3 pounds Up to 400 Mbps download Home or small-business use; compact and weather-tested
Leo Ultra 20 × 30 × 1.9 inches Up to 1 Gbps download and 400 Mbps upload Enterprise, government, telecom, aviation, and industrial workloads

Leo Nano

Nano is the smallest and lightest option at 7 by 7 inches and 2.2 pounds. Amazon rates it for downloads up to 100 Mbps and positions it for portable connectivity as well as activities such as 4K streaming, gaming, and video calls. Its portable positioning does not mean that a phone can use it without the terminal; the Nano itself remains the satellite-facing equipment.

Leo Pro

Pro is the middle option, measuring 11 by 11 inches and weighing 5.3 pounds. Amazon lists downloads up to 400 Mbps and describes the antenna as compact and weather-tested for home or business deployment. For a household or small office, Pro is the terminal Amazon’s public descriptions most clearly associate with a fixed site, but availability and installation requirements depend on the eventual market launch.

Leo Ultra

Ultra is an enterprise-class antenna measuring 20 by 30 by 1.9 inches. Its published ceiling is up to 1 Gbps down and 400 Mbps up. Amazon describes it for demanding business, government, telecom, aviation, and industrial workloads, including private networking and direct AWS connectivity. Those capabilities do not establish that Ultra is an appropriate residential purchase or that it can be ordered by individual consumers.

Can you use your own Wi-Fi router?

Possibly, but Amazon has not confirmed the conditions. Its public product and FAQ material discusses Wi-Fi performance as one factor that affects the speed users experience, yet it does not specify a supported router list or a standard network handoff. The following details remain unpublished:

  • Whether the customer terminal exposes a conventional Ethernet WAN or LAN port.
  • Which Ethernet speeds, cable standards, or connector types are required.
  • Whether the terminal can operate in bridge, passthrough, or modem-only mode.
  • Whether users must configure VLAN tags, authentication, static routes, or another WAN setting.
  • Whether third-party mesh systems are supported and how satellite terminals handle multiple access points.
  • Whether a router supplied by Amazon is required for residential service.

A generic Ethernet router may prove usable if Amazon provides a conventional LAN/WAN handoff, but that is an inference—not a verified compatibility claim. Do not buy a specific router on the assumption that it is certified for Leo until Amazon publishes launch documentation for your country and service plan.

What about eero and mesh Wi-Fi?

Amazon’s public Leo material does not confirm eero compatibility, nor does it describe restrictions on third-party mesh equipment. A mesh kit could be useful in a large home if the terminal supplies a documented Ethernet handoff, but that cannot be treated as an official feature today. Mesh operation can depend on whether the satellite terminal performs routing, whether it supports bridge mode, and how it assigns addresses; Amazon has not published those behaviors.

The practical rule is simple: choose a mesh system only after the Leo installation guide identifies the supported handoff and operating modes. Until then, statements that a particular eero or other consumer mesh model “works with Leo” go beyond the available documentation.

How a Leo home network is expected to be arranged

The likely topology is a satellite-facing Leo terminal followed by local networking equipment, but the exact ports and modes are not public. Treat the following as a planning model, not a confirmed wiring specification:

  1. Obtain an authorized Leo terminal. Select Nano, Pro, or Ultra according to the intended environment and the plan offered in your country.
  2. Install and orient the terminal according to Amazon’s launch instructions. The public material does not yet provide a complete consumer installation procedure, so do not rely on a third-party diagram or an assumed dish setup.
  3. Check the terminal’s documented network handoff. Confirm the connector, Ethernet speed, addressing method, and whether routing or bridge mode is available before purchasing additional networking hardware.
  4. Connect only equipment covered by that documentation. If Amazon permits a customer-owned router, configure it exactly as the guide specifies rather than guessing at VLAN, authentication, or static-address settings.
  5. Add Wi-Fi access points or mesh nodes after the WAN link is working. This isolates satellite-service problems from local wireless-coverage problems.
  6. Test with a wired device first. Because Amazon lists Wi-Fi performance as one variable in actual speeds, a wired test—if the documented installation provides one—can show whether a slowdown is local wireless performance or the satellite connection.

These steps deliberately stop short of naming a port or setting that Amazon has not published. The missing customer-terminal LAN specification is a launch-documentation gap, not a reason to assume that all standard routers will be interchangeable.

Which terminal is best for home internet?

There is no universal answer until Amazon publishes plan pricing, ordering rules, installation requirements, and availability by country. The published positioning provides a sensible starting point:

  • Consider Nano when portability is central and a maximum download rating of 100 Mbps fits the expected workload. Its small 7-by-7-inch, 2.2-pound form is the easiest of the three to transport.
  • Consider Pro for a fixed home or small-business site where the published 400 Mbps download ceiling is more appropriate and the antenna can remain outdoors in weather-tested conditions.
  • Consider Ultra only for an enterprise or institutional requirement that justifies its larger 20-by-30-inch form and its published 1 Gbps down/400 Mbps up capability, such as demanding business, government, telecom, aviation, industrial, private-networking, or AWS-connected workloads.

Those are capability and positioning comparisons, not promises of availability or real-world speed. A terminal’s maximum rating does not guarantee that a particular address, plan, weather condition, or Wi-Fi network will deliver that rate.

Availability, preview status, and regulatory limits

Amazon says it began an enterprise preview in November 2025 using production hardware and software. It plans wider service rollout in 2026 as satellite coverage and capacity grow. Amazon’s FAQ says the initial constellation design contains more than 3,000 satellites.

Amazon retired the Project Kuiper name and adopted Amazon Leo as its permanent identity on November 13, 2025. Older articles, product pages, or listings may therefore use the former name, but that does not prove that a terminal is currently orderable.

The technology page also carries an important regulatory notice: “These devices have not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. These devices are not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.” Until the applicable authorization and sales launch occur, treat terminal listings, prices, and reseller offers as unverified unless they appear through an official, authorized channel.

What to verify before buying a router or terminal

  • Country and address eligibility: service rollout is tied to coverage, capacity, and local authorization.
  • Terminal model: confirm whether the offer is Nano, Pro, or Ultra and whether the model is intended for your environment.
  • Plan limits: published terminal throughput is not the same as a plan’s guaranteed rate.
  • Network handoff: look for an official statement of port type, speed, routing mode, addressing, and authentication.
  • Outdoor installation: verify weather exposure, mounting, power, cable length, and any professional-installation requirement in the final guide.
  • Router and mesh support: require explicit documentation before treating a third-party model or eero system as compatible.
  • Regulatory status: check that the equipment is authorized and legally offered in your market.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing an end-user device with the satellite terminal

A laptop or phone can use an internet connection delivered over Wi-Fi, but neither device contains the phased-array antenna and satellite-network processor required for Leo access. Plan for a Leo terminal first.

Buying on the basis of a maximum speed

The 100 Mbps, 400 Mbps, and 1 Gbps figures are published maximums from limited preliminary testing. Geography, weather, Wi-Fi, plan availability, congestion, and policy can all change the result.

Trusting an unofficial listing

Because Amazon has described an enterprise preview and a future 2026 rollout while also displaying an FCC authorization warning, an online listing alone is not evidence that a terminal is approved, supported, or orderable in your country.

What is still unknown about routers?

Amazon has not released a third-party router model list or detailed customer-terminal LAN interface specification. That means readers cannot yet make a documented model-by-model compatibility comparison. The decisive information will be Amazon’s launch documentation: the physical handoff, supported WAN behavior, bridge or passthrough options, addressing and authentication requirements, mesh guidance, and any country-specific restrictions.

Until those details are published, the defensible answer is that Leo hardware compatibility is known only for Amazon’s own Nano, Pro, and Ultra customer terminals. Compatibility of customer-owned routers, mesh kits, and eero remains unresolved.
