If a device is frozen or acting up, restart it first when possible. A factory reset is a much bigger step: it can erase data, so back up important files and confirm you can sign back in before proceeding. The right recovery steps depend on whether you have Android, an Apple device, or a Windows PC.
What is the difference between restarting and factory resetting?
A restart turns a device off and back on. It is a reasonable first step for many freezes and temporary performance problems, and it does not intentionally erase personal files.
A factory reset erases a device or reinstalls its operating system. Depending on the platform and selected options, it may remove personal files, apps, and settings. Treat it as an advanced recovery option, not a routine equivalent of restarting. Google distinguishes Android restart troubleshooting from factory reset guidance; Apple, Google, and Microsoft provide separate erase or reset processes.

How do I restart a frozen device?
Android phones
If the screen is on but the phone is frozen, Google says to hold the power button for about 30 seconds or until the phone restarts. This applies to most phones; the procedure can vary by manufacturer. For a different model or a phone that does not respond, use the manufacturer’s current instructions rather than assuming a button sequence.

iPhone, iPad, and Windows PCs
Restart controls differ by model and operating-system version. Use the current official support instructions for your specific device if its normal controls do not respond. Do not assume the Android power-button procedure applies to Apple devices or PCs.
What should I try before erasing anything?
If an Android phone restarts, crashes, or runs slowly
Before considering a factory reset, Google recommends checking for Android updates, checking available storage, and investigating recently downloaded apps. Safe-mode steps vary by phone, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model. Google describes factory reset as advanced troubleshooting and warns that it removes data.

If an Android phone will not charge or turn on
Start with basic power checks: confirm the cable and adapter work, try another outlet, inspect the charging connection and port, and try a known-compatible cable or adapter. Google’s advice is Android-specific; it is not a universal diagnostic for every phone. Consult its symptom-specific instructions and the device maker’s guidance for exact steps. If the phone rings but the screen remains blank, Google advises contacting an authorized repair center.
What should I prepare before a factory reset?
- Back up what matters. Check the vendor’s current instructions for backing up photos, files, and other data. A backup may not include everything, and restoring it can depend on account access.
- Confirm sign-in details. Make sure you know the account credentials associated with the device; you may need them during setup or restoration.
- Find any recovery key. For an encrypted Windows PC, Microsoft says you need the BitLocker recovery key to reset from the Windows Recovery Environment.
- Check for account-related delays. Google’s Android instructions warn that after changing a Google Account password, you may need to wait before resetting the phone.
Apple’s erase instructions also include making a backup before erasing. Follow the current instructions for your device and account rather than assuming one backup method covers every item.

How do I reset a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC?
Microsoft offers Reset this PC through Settings or the Windows Recovery Environment. The recovery guide recommends trying less disruptive troubleshooting options first. Reset this PC reinstalls Windows, and the choices determine what is removed:

The cloud and local choices differ in where the installation files come from; neither choice changes the need to prepare files you cannot afford to lose. Back up important files before starting, and have the BitLocker recovery key available if the PC is encrypted and you are resetting from recovery.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. Resetting a Windows 10 PC does not change that support status.

Google’s factory-reset guidance explains that a reset deletes data on the device and recommends backing up first. The exact Settings path and recovery-button procedure can differ by manufacturer, so use Google’s instructions or the phone maker’s current guide for your specific model. If the on-device menus do not match the instructions, do not guess at a button combination.

How do I factory reset an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch?
Apple’s erase guide covers backing up and erasing an Apple device to restore factory settings. Follow its current device-specific steps and account prompts. Since the available guidance here does not establish a restart-button sequence for every Apple model, consult Apple’s model-specific restart instructions if you need to force a restart rather than erase the device.
What if a Windows reset looks stuck?
Microsoft warns that a black screen during Reset this PC can last a long time—sometimes upwards of 15 minutes—and that manually restarting during the process could cause the reset to fail. That duration is a possible warning, not a typical or guaranteed reset time. Do not force a restart based only on a temporarily blank screen; follow the on-screen prompts and the instructions for your PC.
