There is no universally best currency exchange API. Choose the service whose rate source, update schedule, currency coverage, historical depth, quota, commercial rights and support match your application. For a no-key, open-source reference-rate feed, Frankfurter is the clearest starting point. For a hosted service with a documented free allowance, exchangerate.host is worth checking. The other seven candidates—ExchangeRate-API, Open Exchange Rates, Fixer, CurrencyLayer, CurrencyFreaks, FxFeed and currencyapi—belong on a due-diligence shortlist, but their current plan and feature details should be confirmed in first-party documentation before you commit.

This guide separates reference data from executable transaction quotes, explains the trade-offs behind all nine options, and gives a practical selection and production checklist.

What “best” means for a currency API

An exchange-rate API can serve very different jobs: displaying an indicative price, calculating an invoice, producing an accounting report, powering a foreign-exchange dashboard, or supporting a trade workflow. Those jobs do not need the same data. A daily reference rate may be perfectly suitable for a report and unsuitable for a checkout total that must reflect a provider’s live executable quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate each candidate on seven axes:

  • Provenance and method: Identify the central bank, market-data vendors, aggregation method, or blend behind every rate.
  • Freshness: Check the actual update interval for your plan and currency pair, not just a marketing description of “live” data.
  • Coverage: Verify the currencies, pairs and permitted base currencies you need. A large currency count does not guarantee every pair or base.
  • History and analytics: Look for the earliest date, time-series granularity, change or fluctuation data, and export formats required by your reports or models.
  • Quota and total cost: Count requests as the provider counts them, including calls made by retries, dashboards and background jobs. Include overage and upgrade costs.
  • Rights and operations: Confirm commercial-use permission, redistribution terms, rate limits, SLA, support channel and uptime evidence.
  • Failure strategy: Decide how your software behaves when a provider is late, unavailable or returns a value outside your validation rules.

Write these requirements down before comparing prices. A cheaper feed that cannot legally support your product or cannot provide the required pair is not a bargain.

The nine APIs at a glance

API What the available documentation establishes Best starting question
Frankfurter 223 currencies from 104 central banks and official sources; daily rates back to 1948; no API key; open-source self-hosting; provider filtering, current and historical data, time series, CSV and NDJSON; no built-in conversion endpoint. Do daily reference rates and a self-managed or public deployment meet your needs?
exchangerate.host Its pricing page lists 100 requests per month with daily updates on the free tier; paid tiers advertise larger allowances and faster updates. The service covers current and historical FX and crypto rates, with historical observations described as end-of-day. What update interval, quota and commercial rights does the current plan provide?
ExchangeRate-API Included in a March 2026 comparison of currency APIs. Current vendor-specific limits and features need first-party confirmation. Which currencies, bases, refresh interval and overage rules are in the plan you would buy?
Open Exchange Rates Included in the March 2026 comparison. Verify current endpoints, allowances, history and licensing in the provider documentation. Can its base-currency and historical model match your accounting or pricing workflow?
Fixer Included in the March 2026 comparison. Confirm current plan capabilities directly before relying on its figures. Is the required freshness available on a plan that permits your commercial use?
CurrencyLayer Included in the March 2026 comparison. Treat comparison figures as a shortlist signal, not as a current specification. How are rates sourced, and what happens when a pair is unavailable?
CurrencyFreaks Included in the March 2026 comparison. Obtain current currency, history, quota and support details from its own documentation. Does its historical range and response format reduce your data-engineering work?
FxFeed Included in a September 2026 comparison whose publisher discloses that it makes FxFeed. Independently verify every plan and feature claim. Can you validate the source, methodology and commercial terms without relying on the comparison alone?
currencyapi Included in the September 2026 comparison. Confirm current limits, update schedule and rights with the vendor. Will its API contract and support model satisfy production and audit requirements?

The two services with concrete first-party figures in the available material are Frankfurter and exchangerate.host. The remaining seven are reasonable candidates to investigate, but a March or September comparison is not a substitute for a current contract, pricing page and API reference.

Frankfurter: the strongest no-key reference-rate option

Frankfurter’s documentation reports 223 currencies supplied by 104 central banks and official sources, with daily rates dating to 1948. It requires no API key and is open source, so a team can inspect the implementation or self-host it. The service supports current and historical queries, time series, provider selection, CSV and NDJSON output.

Frankfurter’s default values are blended across providers. Its documentation says you can filter to one provider or query that provider directly; the last decimal places of a blended value can move as new data arrives. That behavior matters for compliance, reconciliation and tests that expect an immutable number. If an auditor requires a named official source, select and record that provider instead of silently using the blend.

Important limitation: conversion is your code

Frankfurter explicitly states that it has no conversion endpoint: fetch a rate and convert in a few lines of code. That is simple, but it makes rounding and decimal policy your responsibility. Keep calculations in a decimal type rather than binary floating point, carry the source date and provider through your business record, and round only at the legally or contractually required point.

    value = Decimal(str(amount)) * Decimal(str(rate))
    quantum = Decimal("1").scaleb(-places)
    return value.quantize(quantum, rounding=ROUND_HALF_UP)

# Store the API response's rate, date and provider with the result.
converted = convert("125.00", "1.0847", 2)

The code illustrates the arithmetic only; use the endpoint and response fields documented by Frankfurter for your deployment. Do not infer that a daily reference value is the amount a bank, card network or broker will execute.

When Frankfurter fits

  • Public dashboards, educational projects and internal tools that can tolerate daily reference data.
  • Teams that want a no-key starting point or the option to self-host open-source software.
  • Historical reporting that benefits from a stated 1948 start date.
  • Systems that can implement their own conversion, rounding, caching and audit fields.

It is a weaker fit when you need an out-of-the-box conversion operation, guaranteed intraday updates, a vendor SLA, or a transaction-specific quote.

exchangerate.host: a hosted service with a small free allowance

The current exchangerate.host pricing page lists a free tier of 100 requests per month with daily updates. Paid tiers advertise larger allowances and faster updates, so the exact plan terms should be checked immediately before purchase. APILayer describes the service as covering current and historical foreign-exchange and cryptocurrency rates; its historical data is described as end-of-day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One hundred requests per month is enough for a small proof of concept or a manually refreshed report, not for a busy application that calls the API per page view or per cart line. Estimate calls before selecting the tier. A cache that refreshes once per currency pair per day can reduce demand dramatically; a quote service that requests rates for every user action will consume the allowance quickly.

Questions to resolve before production

  • Does the plan’s faster update interval apply to every currency you need or only selected pairs?
  • Are cryptocurrency responses, historical observations and conversion features covered by the same quota?
  • Can your organization use and redistribute the data commercially, and are there attribution requirements?
  • What response, timeout, retry and rate-limit behavior should your client expect?
  • What support and uptime commitments apply to the paid tier you would actually use?

How to treat the other seven candidates

ExchangeRate-API, Open Exchange Rates, Fixer, CurrencyLayer and CurrencyFreaks were listed in a March 2026 comparison. FxFeed and currencyapi were listed in a September 2026 comparison; that article discloses that its publisher makes FxFeed, so its FxFeed claims deserve especially careful independent validation. These references establish that the services are plausible alternatives, not that a particular allowance, endpoint or SLA is still current.

For each of these seven, obtain the vendor’s current pricing and API documentation and record the answers in a procurement worksheet. Do not copy a comparison table into production requirements without checking its date and source.

Minimum verification worksheet

  1. Identify the rate source. Record named central banks, market-data providers, aggregation rules and whether the value is a reference, midpoint, snapshot or executable quote.
  2. Test your pairs and bases. Request every required currency pair, including zero-volume or less common combinations, and confirm whether the base can be changed without extra calls.
  3. Check time semantics. Capture the timestamp, timezone, publication schedule and update frequency. Verify whether “real time” means a streaming market feed, periodic polling or a delayed snapshot.
  4. Probe history. Test the earliest date you need, weekends and holidays, and a time series over a period representative of your reports.
  5. Measure quota behavior. Learn what counts as a request, how retries are charged, how limits are returned, and whether overages stop, throttle or bill the account.
  6. Read the rights. Confirm commercial use, storage, redistribution, attribution, retention and territory restrictions in the current terms.
  7. Evaluate operations. Ask for SLA language, status history, support response expectations, authentication methods, IP restrictions and data-residency information where relevant.
  8. Run a failure test. Simulate a timeout, malformed response, stale timestamp and unavailable pair. Ensure your application fails safely rather than silently using an old or zero rate.

Reference rates are not executable transaction prices

The European Central Bank’s 23 June 2026 framework says euro foreign-exchange reference rates are determined daily around 14:10 CET and published around 16:00 CET. The framework describes validation and the use of transactional data where available; when rates are quote-derived, they are set at the arithmetic midpoint of bid and ask. The coverage is official currencies of non-euro EU member states and other currencies with liquid, active spot markets.

That schedule describes the ECB reference process, not every API that uses ECB data. A service may republish those values on its own schedule, combine them with other providers or offer a more frequent commercial feed. A reference rate is therefore appropriate for consistent reporting and indicative display, while a payment, brokerage or treasury workflow may require a quote tied to a particular venue, timestamp, spread and execution rule.

Match the data type to the decision

Application decision Usually sufficient Additional evidence to require
Daily financial report A documented daily reference rate with a stable historical record. Publication timestamp, source attribution, restatement policy and export format.
Indicative product display A cached reference or market snapshot, clearly labelled as indicative. Maximum age, refresh behavior and a visible disclaimer when markets move.
Invoice or tax calculation A rate that satisfies the jurisdiction’s accounting rule for the invoice date. Named source, rounding policy, timezone, immutable audit record and retention rights.
Checkout or payout amount A current quote from the processor or settlement provider. Quote expiry, spread, fees, execution currency and what happens if the quote expires.
Trading or hedging workflow A market-data or venue feed designed for execution decisions. Latency, tick history, venue coverage, entitlements and resilience guarantees.

Historical data and backtesting checks

“Historical rates” can mean a daily end-of-day series, a sparse archive of reference observations or tick-level market data. Frankfurter states that its daily history reaches back to 1948. exchangerate.host describes historical rates as end-of-day observations. Those statements do not establish that every pair is available for every date, so test the exact pair and date range your model uses.

For reproducible analysis, save the raw response, provider identifier, observation date, retrieval timestamp and any revision indicator. Distinguish a missing market holiday from an API error. If a provider blends sources, a later refresh may alter the last decimal places; pin a named provider when a backtest or audit must be repeatable.

Quota, caching and cost planning

Start with a call budget rather than a vendor’s free-tier headline. Multiply the number of currency pairs by refreshes per day, environments and expected retries. Add scheduled reports, admin screens and health checks. If a single request can return several currencies, design around that response instead of issuing one call per pair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cache rates with an explicit freshness policy. Keep the timestamp and source beside the value, define what “stale” means for each feature, and expose cache age to operators. Use exponential backoff for transient failures, but cap retries so an outage does not turn into a quota event. Never overwrite a valid stored rate with an empty or malformed response.

For the exchangerate.host free allowance, 100 monthly requests means roughly three calls per day on average, although the service measures requests by its own rules. That can support a low-frequency job when responses are cached, but it is not a safe assumption for interactive traffic. Recalculate after you know the paid plan’s allowance and overage policy.

Production implementation checklist

  • Authentication: Keep keys in a secret manager, rotate them, and restrict their scope or source IP when the provider supports it.
  • Transport: Require HTTPS, validate certificates and set connect, read and total timeouts.
  • Response validation: Check schema, currency codes, numeric range, timestamp age and provider identity before accepting a rate.
  • Numeric handling: Use decimal arithmetic, define scale and rounding mode, and document whether fees are applied before or after conversion.
  • Observability: Log request ID, provider, pair, source date, cache age, latency, status and failure reason without logging secrets or personal data.
  • Fallbacks: Choose a second source or a last-known-good policy, and make the fallback visible to users and auditors.
  • Idempotency: Store the exact rate used for an invoice, payout or report so a later refresh cannot change a historical result.
  • Contract review: Confirm that storage, internal sharing, customer display and redistribution are permitted by the plan.

Which API should you choose?

Choose Frankfurter when

You need broad, documented daily reference coverage, no API key, historical data back to 1948, and the freedom to inspect or self-host open-source software. Plan to implement conversion, rounding, caching and provider selection yourself.

Choose exchangerate.host when

You prefer a hosted service and your prototype can fit within 100 requests per month with daily updates, or you are prepared to buy a tier with the required allowance and faster refresh. Confirm current rights, limits and historical behavior before launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Investigate the other seven when

Your requirements point to a commercial feature, support commitment, currency set or update schedule not established by the two documented options. Treat ExchangeRate-API, Open Exchange Rates, Fixer, CurrencyLayer, CurrencyFreaks, FxFeed and currencyapi as candidates for a structured vendor review, not as interchangeable products. Obtain current first-party evidence for rate methodology, freshness, history, quota, price, licensing and SLA, then test the exact pairs and failure paths your application will use.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Classify the business action as reporting, indicative display, accounting, checkout or execution.
  2. Write the required currencies, base currencies, date range, update interval and maximum acceptable staleness.
  3. Eliminate services whose source type or commercial rights cannot meet that requirement.
  4. Run pair, history, quota and failure tests against the remaining candidates.
  5. Calculate monthly calls with caching and retries included, then compare the complete plan cost.
  6. Document the chosen source, rounding rule, fallback and audit fields before integrating it into business logic.

The best API is the one that can prove those requirements in its current documentation and contract—not the one with the largest currency count or the lowest advertised price.
