A 240Hz monitor can refresh 240 times per second, but it cannot make a PC render 240 frames per second. For a high-end gaming build, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a strong CPU candidate; compare it with the newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and current Intel Core Ultra options using benchmarks in the games you play. No processor guarantees 240 FPS in every title or scene: the result also depends on the GPU, resolution, settings, memory, system configuration, and software.
What a CPU can—and cannot—do for 240Hz gaming
A 240Hz display can show up to 240 refreshes per second. To make full use of that refresh rate, the PC must produce frames at a comparable pace. The monitor sets a display capability, not a frame-rate guarantee.
The CPU matters most when the game and settings make the processor a limiting part of the system. Competitive games at lower resolutions or reduced visual settings can put more emphasis on CPU throughput. At higher resolutions or demanding graphics settings, the GPU may instead become the limiting part. A faster CPU cannot remove a GPU bottleneck.

Even a system that averages near 240 FPS may fall below that level in demanding scenes. Look at average FPS alongside 1% lows or frame-time consistency: those measures help reveal dips that an average can hide. Compare results in the games you actually play, with a GPU and settings like yours.

CPUs worth comparing
| CPU | Why consider it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D | A high-end gaming candidate with 8 cores, 16 threads, boost speeds up to 5.2 GHz, 96 MB of L3 cache, and a 120 W default TDP, according to AMD’s product specifications. | Compare current independent gaming results and local pricing with newer alternatives. It uses the AM5 socket and DDR5 memory; the box does not include a thermal solution. |
| AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D | A newer gaming-focused option covered in current review material. | Check measured gains over the 9800X3D against any price premium. A newer model number alone does not establish better value. |
| AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D | A previous-generation alternative that may make sense if its current price is attractive. | Check current game benchmarks, availability, and the cost of the full platform you need. |
| Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Core Ultra 5 250K Plus | Recent Intel alternatives with review coverage alongside gaming CPUs from AMD. They may also merit consideration if your PC has mixed productivity workloads. | Use matched gaming tests and compare total system value, not a result from a single game or review chart. |
For the 9800X3D’s specifications, see AMD’s product page. Reviews of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Core Ultra 5 250K Plus provide additional comparison points; consult their test methods and check current prices before choosing.
How to read the 9800X3D’s published gaming comparison
AMD’s October 2024 competitive-gaming document reports the Ryzen 7 9800X3D averaging 20% higher performance than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in AMD’s 1080p high-detail game suite and test setup. That is a manufacturer-reported result for the listed games and conditions—not a promise of a 20% gain in your games or a universal ranking.

Confirm the platform
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. Check the motherboard maker’s CPU support information and BIOS requirements for the exact board and processor before purchase. A CPU’s socket match alone does not establish that a particular board is ready to run it.

- 240Hz Refresh Rate: Stay above the pack with 240Hz, giving you an edge in performance as frames transition instantly.Specific uses for product - Gaming
- 1ms Response Time: Colors fade and illuminate instantly with a 1ms response time, eliminating ghosting and piecing together precise imagery during action-packed scenes and gaming.
- 1500R Curvature: The 1500R degree curved design immerses you into all of the action no matter where you choose to sit in the room.
- AMD FreeSync Premium: By accelerating the frame rate to at least 120Hz at 1080P FHD resolution and delivering low latency to prevent visible delay in data processing, AMD FreeSync Premium allows gameplay to reach the highest echelons of performance.
- Built-In Speakers: Perfectly suited to work & gaming settings, built-in speakers deliver robust & smooth audio while saving space on your desk.
Budget for cooling
AMD says the 9800X3D does not include a thermal solution and recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance. Account for a compatible cooler in the build budget, and verify cooler compatibility with the case and motherboard. Do not assume a cooler included with another processor or system will transfer to this build.
Balance CPU, GPU, and display settings
Choose a GPU capable of delivering the frame rates and image settings you want in your games. If your current GPU is the constraint, replacing the CPU may not move performance to 240 FPS. Conversely, lowering visual settings can reduce GPU demand, making CPU performance more important in some competitive titles.

A practical way to choose
- List your games and target settings. Include resolution and whether you prioritize maximum frame rate, visual quality, or a balance.
- Compare recent benchmarks for those games. Prefer reviews that identify the game version, test settings, GPU, memory, and resolution. Check average FPS and 1% lows or frame-time behavior rather than relying on one average.
- Price the complete platform. Add the motherboard, DDR5 memory where required, and a compatible cooler to the CPU price. Compare the resulting system cost, not just processor prices.
- Factor in other workloads and upgrade plans. If you also do productivity work, compare those results and needs alongside gaming performance. Consider the platform’s upgrade path, power, and cooling.
- Recheck current availability and prices. CPU rankings and value change with prices, stock, firmware, and game updates; a review result is not a permanent value verdict.
