Start with four changes: connect each device through a profile, choose an encrypted DNS protocol supported by that device, enable only the filter categories you actually need, and keep Analytics at the least detailed level that still helps you verify or troubleshoot the setup. Then test the sites and apps you use. Control D describes itself as “a DNS service that you can customize to your needs,” but the right configuration depends on how much diagnostic data you accept, which threats you want to block, and whether a filter or protocol causes compatibility problems.
There is no universal fastest or most private setting. Analytics can expose DNS queries when enabled; DoQ is documented as experimental; filters can produce false positives; and the service does not replace endpoint security or privacy controls elsewhere on your network. The settings below give you a practical baseline and a way to adjust it safely.
What a Control D profile and endpoint do
A profile contains the policy: protocols, filters, service rules, custom rules, and the default behavior. An endpoint connects that policy to a particular device or network and supplies the DNS resolver details needed for the connection. You can configure an endpoint directly on a computer or phone, deploy it on a router, or use an optional setup application or command-line daemon where the operating system does not provide a convenient secure-DNS interface.
Modern operating systems often support encrypted DNS without an installed client. Router deployment is useful when you want one policy to cover many devices, but a new router is not a requirement of the service. Choose the deployment that matches your equipment and who needs the policy: a device endpoint gives you per-device control, while a router endpoint applies the profile to clients on that network.

Privacy settings to review first
Reduce Analytics to the minimum useful level
Analytics is optional. Control D documents both Statistics and Activity Log views, and its Full Analytics level can record highly detailed DNS information. The most granular data stored by Control D in any circumstance is kept for a maximum of one month when Full Analytics is selected. That retention statement describes product data handling; it is not a promise that enabling Analytics is private.
For everyday use, select the least detailed Analytics level that answers your question. If you are checking whether a new endpoint works, a less detailed view may be enough. If you are diagnosing a blocked domain, temporarily increase detail, identify the rule involved, and then reduce or disable Analytics again. This is a privacy-conscious operating practice rather than a vendor-mandated setting.
Review the Analytics storage region
The Trust Center has listed New York, Amsterdam, and Sydney as available Analytics storage regions at the time of the documented review. Availability and account labels can change, so check the current choices in your account preferences before selecting one. Region selection affects where Analytics data is stored; it does not make the underlying DNS queries anonymous.

Understand what DNS privacy does—and does not—cover
DNS filtering controls name-resolution requests. It can prevent a device from resolving a blocked advertising, tracking, or malicious domain, but it does not conceal every connection your device makes. If Analytics is enabled, Control D can record DNS queries and related metadata. Web services, applications, your internet provider, and other network systems may still have their own visibility. Treat encrypted DNS as protection for the DNS leg of a connection, not as a blanket privacy guarantee.
A privacy-oriented baseline
- Use a supported encrypted protocol rather than legacy DNS when your device or router supports it.
- Leave Analytics off or at a low-detail level after setup verification.
- Choose a storage region deliberately and recheck it if account options change.
- Enable only the filter categories that serve a clear purpose; every additional list increases the chance of a false positive.
Security settings that provide useful protection without breaking services
Choose an encrypted DNS protocol
Control D documents DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH), DNS-over-TLS (DoT), and DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ), along with legacy DNS listeners. DoH and DoT are established choices when supported by the operating system, browser, router, or client. The introduction to Control D’s deployment documentation calls DoQ experimental, so support for it should not be treated as a universal recommendation or an automatic speed advantage.
| Protocol | Use it when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DoH | Your device, browser, or router supports encrypted DNS over HTTPS. | Check that the selected implementation accepts the endpoint format Control D provides. |
| DoT | Your operating system, router, or DNS client supports DNS-over-TLS. | Compatibility depends on the device and deployment method. |
| DoQ | You are willing to test an experimental option on compatible equipment. | Control D describes DoQ as experimental; do not assume it is faster or more reliable. |
| Legacy DNS | You have a device or network that cannot use an encrypted protocol. | It lacks the transport privacy provided by DoH, DoT, or DoQ. |
Use the protocol your deployment can support reliably. A compatible DoH or DoT configuration is generally more useful than an experimental protocol that causes intermittent failures.

Select security filters deliberately
Filters are blocklists. Control D maintains its native filters, while third-party filters are community maintained and their contents are not controlled by Control D. A community list can be valuable, but its scope, update behavior, and false positives may differ from a native list. Read the description of each category and start with the smallest set that addresses your threat model.
For a household, that may mean a malware category plus a modest advertising or tracking category. A managed network may need stricter categories, but it should also have an exception process for legitimate business, education, payment, or authentication domains. DNS blocking is not complete endpoint protection: keep operating-system updates, browser protections, device security software, and account security practices in place.
Use custom and service rules for exceptions
If a needed service is blocked, do not immediately disable every filter. Add a narrow exception or service rule after identifying the domain involved. Custom rules can Block, Bypass, or Redirect. Service rules can govern matching services, which is useful when a product uses several related domains. Keep exceptions as specific as possible so that one required domain does not reopen an entire category.

How Control D rules are evaluated
When more than one profile is enforced on an endpoint, Control D combines those profiles before matching a request. The documented priority order is:
- Custom Rules
- Service Rules
- Filters
- Default Rule
The first applicable rule in that sequence determines the result. This order explains many apparent filter failures. A custom rule can override a filter, and a service rule can take precedence over both a filter decision and the default behavior. Conversely, an unexpected block or redirect may be caused by a higher-priority rule rather than by the filter category you just changed.

Why blocking can sometimes feel faster
Control D markets ad and tracker blocking as a way to reduce unnecessary downloads and requests. If a page would otherwise contact many advertising or tracking domains, preventing those lookups and connections can reduce work for the browser and network. That is a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for a particular connection.

Do not assume the newest protocol is fastest
DNS protocol choice affects compatibility and can affect perceived responsiveness, but the official material reviewed for this guide does not provide independent speed measurements for DoH, DoT, DoQ, or legacy DNS. Test the supported options on your own network rather than inferring performance from the protocol name. An experimental option that fails or retries will feel slower than a conventional encrypted option that answers consistently.
A simple local test method
- Choose one profile and change one setting only: a protocol, filter category, or Analytics level.
- Clear the device’s DNS cache if the operating system or browser keeps one, then reconnect the endpoint.
- Open the pages and apps you use most, including sign-in, payment, video, messaging, and work services.
- Check for errors, delayed loading, missing images, sign-in loops, or notifications that do not arrive.
- Keep the change only if reliability is unchanged and your own timing or experience improves. Otherwise revert it and test the next option.
This method identifies practical compatibility and performance on your connection. It does not establish a universal benchmark.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recommended setup sequence
- Create or choose a profile. Put the intended policy in one profile rather than changing unrelated profiles accidentally. Control D’s quick setup describes profile creation as the first step.
- Create or select an endpoint. Connect the endpoint to the device or network that should use the profile. For a router, follow the router deployment instructions; for a single device, use its secure-DNS settings or an optional Control D application.
- Choose the protocol. Prefer a supported encrypted protocol. Use DoH or DoT where they are supported reliably; test DoQ only if you accept its documented experimental status. Use legacy DNS only when encryption is unavailable.
- Set Analytics. Start with no Analytics or the lowest level that lets you verify the connection. Increase detail temporarily only when troubleshooting.
- Enable filters. Begin with the categories that match your objective, such as malware protection or a limited advertising/tracker list. Avoid enabling every available list at once.
- Add narrowly scoped rules. Use custom or service rules for known exceptions, blocks, or redirects. Record why each exception exists so it can be removed later.
- Verify the result. The quick setup guidance suggests checking DNS queries in Analytics. If you use that check, select an appropriate privacy level and reduce or disable Analytics afterward.
Troubleshooting blocked or unexpectedly allowed domains
A filter appears not to work
- Inspect Custom Rules for a matching Bypass or Redirect.
- Inspect Service Rules for the service containing the domain.
- Check whether the selected filter actually includes that domain and whether it is a native or community-maintained list.
- Review the Default Rule, which applies only when no higher-priority rule matches.
- Confirm that the device is using the intended endpoint and profile, not an old resolver or a second enforced profile.
A legitimate site or app is broken
Identify the smallest domain set needed for the affected function, then add a narrow bypass or service rule. If you cannot identify the domain, temporarily lower filter scope or Analytics detail just enough to observe the relevant DNS requests. Restore the broader policy once the exception is in place. Avoid solving one broken site by disabling all security filters for every device.

Nothing changes after editing a setting
- Confirm that the endpoint is connected to the profile you edited.
- Allow for DNS and application caches; reconnect the endpoint and clear local caches where appropriate.
- Check whether another enforced profile contributes a higher-priority custom or service rule.
- Verify that the device is not using a manually configured DNS server, browser-specific DNS setting, VPN resolver, or cellular connection that bypasses the intended endpoint.
Choosing a configuration by priority
| Priority | Configuration approach | Settings to favor | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum data minimization | Privacy-first | Analytics off or minimal; encrypted DoH or DoT; narrow filters; few exceptions. | Less diagnostic information when a domain fails. |
| Balanced household protection | Practical baseline | Encrypted protocol supported by the router or devices; malware and carefully chosen ad/tracker filters; temporary Analytics during setup. | Some sites may require a specific exception. |
| Compatibility and troubleshooting | Reliability-first | Stable supported protocol; limited filters; enough Analytics to identify failures; explicit service rules. | Less blocking and potentially more DNS metadata while diagnosing. |
| Experimentation | Test profile | DoQ or community filters only on selected devices, with local tests and an easy rollback. | Experimental protocol behavior and community-list false positives can affect reliability. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving Full Analytics enabled permanently. It provides the most detail and retains the most granular data for up to one month; use it for a purpose, then reduce it.
- Calling DNS filtering complete privacy or security. It governs DNS resolution, not every form of traffic or endpoint threat.
- Enabling every filter. More lists do not automatically mean better protection and can increase false positives.
- Assuming DoQ is the best choice because it is newer. Control D labels it experimental.
- Changing the default rule first. Higher-priority custom and service rules may be the real cause of a block, bypass, or redirect.
- Buying hardware unnecessarily. Supported operating systems can often use secure DNS directly; router deployment is optional.
- Testing many variables at once. One change at a time makes it possible to identify the setting responsible for a speed or reliability change.
When to revisit your settings
Review the profile after adding a new device, changing routers, installing a VPN, or discovering a broken application. Recheck Analytics storage choices and protocol support when Control D changes its account interface or deployment documentation. Community-maintained filters can also change independently of your device, so an exception that was unnecessary last month may become necessary later—or may no longer be needed.
The most defensible ongoing policy is simple: encrypted DNS where supported, the smallest effective filter set, narrowly scoped exceptions, and Analytics limited to the detail required for verification. Measure speed and reliability on the devices and services that matter to you instead of treating a product claim as a benchmark.
