Chocolate chip cookies, mashed potatoes, French fries, bacon, pizza, steak, macaroni and cheese, apple pie, chicken noodle soup, and brownies are the ten comfort foods featured as American favorites in Quartz’s October 5, 2026 article about YouGov polling. The article does not publish a complete ranking, percentages, or the survey’s field dates and sample size, so these foods can be named—but not reliably ordered from first to tenth.

Quartz presents these as foods Americans say they like, drawing on YouGov food-preference polling. Its accessible article does not provide the complete poll table, however. It therefore does not establish the exact order of the ten foods or how many respondents liked each one. Quartz’s article
Why can’t the list be treated as a precise ranking?
A ranked list implies that every item has a known position, supported by comparable figures. The Quartz article names ten favorites but does not show the underlying results needed to verify those positions. Treat the foods as a featured group, not as a numbered leaderboard.
YouGov’s general methodology describes online public-opinion research using active sampling of invited panelists and statistical weighting. It says general-population surveys typically target 1,000 to 2,000 respondents. Those are broad practices, not confirmed details for the specific food data discussed by Quartz; they cannot supply the missing sample size, dates, or percentages. YouGov’s panel methodology

What other YouGov food surveys can—and cannot—tell us
Other published YouGov surveys show how food questions can be reported with dates, sample sizes, and specific measures. They are useful examples of separate polling, not substitutes for the missing results behind the ten-food list.
Sandwich preferences measured likeability
An online YouGov survey of 1,223 U.S. adults, fielded July 12–15, 2019, reported 79% likeability for grilled cheese and 75% each for turkey and grilled chicken. Those percentages concern sandwich preferences, not the ten comfort foods. YouGov’s 2019 sandwich survey

Barbecue polling asked what belongs on a plate
In a separate survey of 16,599 U.S. adults, conducted May 25–June 1, 2021, 65% said burgers belonged on an ideal barbecue plate and 62% chose potato salad. An August 21, 2025 Idaho Potato Commission release described a separate YouGov survey of 3,000 Americans in which mashed potatoes were the top potato dish overall. The release also reported potato salad preference at 67% among rural respondents and 54% among urban respondents, while 73% of Boomers chose mashed potatoes. These findings relate to that survey’s potato-dish question; they do not reveal mashed potatoes’ position or percentage in Quartz’s ten-food list. Idaho Potato Commission’s 2025 survey release

Why these foods may feel like comfort food
Quartz points to familiarity, childhood exposure, regional traditions, nostalgia, versatility, affordability, and routine availability in homes and restaurants as possible reasons these foods resonate. That is an explanatory interpretation of the list, not a causal result demonstrated by the polling. People’s associations can differ by family, region, and personal experience.

How to read the findings accurately
- Use the ten names as a featured set. The article supports identifying these foods, but not assigning them exact positions.
- Keep separate polls separate. Likeability, barbecue-plate choices, and favorite potato dishes are different questions and metrics.
- Keep each statistic with its context. The sample, date, population, and question cited for one survey do not automatically apply to another.
- Do not infer missing percentages. Figures from sandwich, barbecue, or potato polling cannot stand in for the unreported comfort-food results.
