Do not assume an update reset your phone or that every OnePlus handset runs ColorOS. First open Settings > About device (or search Settings for “About device”) and record the model, operating-system name and version, and security-update date. Then review privacy permissions, notification behavior, battery use, and only the personal preferences you actually want to change. If the screen says OxygenOS, follow OxygenOS labels rather than treating ColorOS paths as universal.

Identify the software before touching settings

OnePlus software depends on the phone’s market, model, carrier, and release. In a March 22, 2021 statement, OnePlus said mainland-China devices would use a customized ColorOS while devices outside mainland China would continue with OxygenOS. That statement describes the policy at that time; it does not prove which system is installed on a newer phone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About device, or use Settings search for that phrase.
  3. Write down the exact model, OS name and version, and security-update date.

Use those details whenever you consult a manual or support page. A ColorOS 11 menu should not be assumed to match ColorOS 15 or 16, and an OxygenOS 14 path is not automatically valid on another generation. OnePlus says update availability and timing can vary by model, country, and carrier.

Prepare safely before changing anything

A software update does not require a factory reset. Treat a reset as a last-resort troubleshooting action, not routine maintenance.

  • Back up important photos, messages, authenticator data, and files before installing or troubleshooting an update.
  • Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection appropriate for the update size.
  • Connect the phone to power, or keep the battery above 60% during installation, following OnePlus update guidance.
  • Restart only when the update screen or the phone itself requests it. A restart is not required merely because you opened the settings pages below.

After installation, give the phone ordinary use before judging battery life or performance. Indexing, app updates, and optimization can temporarily increase activity.

Review privacy permissions and special access

Permission review is the most useful post-update check because it shows what apps can access, rather than relying on a single “privacy” switch. Keep access that matches an app’s purpose; revoking everything can break navigation, camera uploads, calls, synchronization, or other features.

Open the permission manager

On the OnePlus OxygenOS 14 manual, the example path is Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. ColorOS labels and nesting vary, so search Settings for Permission manager, Privacy, or the individual permission name and confirm the destination on your phone.

Check these categories one at a time:

  • Location: Keep “while in use” for apps that need navigation or nearby-device functions. Use background location only when the feature genuinely requires continuous access.
  • Camera and microphone: Messaging, video-conferencing, scanning, and camera apps may need them. A game, calculator, or static reader usually should not require continuous access.
  • Photos and media: Prefer the narrowest option offered, such as selected photos, when an app only needs to upload particular images.
  • Contacts: Messaging, dialing, and address-book tools may need contacts; a utility with no communication feature generally does not.
  • Notifications: A notification permission controls whether an app can alert you. Disabling it can hide time-sensitive messages even when the app itself is working.

When an app stops working after a change, return to the same category and restore the permission temporarily. That identifies whether the denial caused the failure before you decide on a narrower setting.

Check special app access separately

Some powerful controls are outside ordinary runtime permissions. The OxygenOS 14 example places them under Settings > Apps > Special app access. On ColorOS, search Settings for Special app access and inspect entries such as display-over-other-apps, unrestricted battery use, usage access, install-unknown-apps, or notification access when those entries exist.

Grant special access only to an app that has a clear reason to use it. For example, a password manager may need overlay or accessibility-related access for autofill, while an unfamiliar game should not receive broad control simply because it requests it. If a feature disappears after revocation, check the app’s help text and restore only the specific access it requires.

Make sure important notifications still arrive

Updates can change notification presentation without changing an app’s underlying data. Test the apps whose alerts you cannot afford to miss: messaging, calendar, banking, two-factor authentication, and security tools.

Verify app-level alerts

  1. Open Settings and search for Notifications.
  2. Open the app-notification list and confirm alerts are enabled for each critical app.
  3. Inspect its categories or channels, if shown. Leave urgent categories enabled and decide separately whether promotional categories should be silent.
  4. Send a test message or trigger a calendar reminder to verify delivery.

On the OxygenOS 14 manual, notification icon behavior and the battery-percentage display are examples under Notifications & status bar. ColorOS may use different wording or place the same controls elsewhere. Use Settings search for notification icons, lock-screen notifications, silent notifications, and battery percentage rather than following an old screenshot blindly.

Check lock-screen visibility and Do Not Disturb

Review whether alerts appear on the lock screen, whether sensitive content is hidden, and whether silent notifications are being collapsed. Then open Do Not Disturb and inspect schedules, allowed people, allowed apps, and automatic rules. A schedule inherited from an earlier setup can make a notification look broken when the phone is intentionally suppressing it.

If alerts arrive late, do not immediately disable every background restriction. First check the app’s notification permission, the DND schedule, battery treatment, and whether the app itself has a quiet-hours setting.

Use battery evidence before restricting apps

OnePlus describes longer battery life as a possible benefit of system updates, not a guaranteed result on every phone. Let the device settle through normal use, then inspect Settings > Battery (the exact label may differ) and open battery usage by app.

  • Look for one app whose consumption is clearly abnormal compared with your usual pattern.
  • Update that app from its legitimate store, sign out and back in if its synchronization is stuck, and check its own background settings.
  • Apply a battery restriction to the individual offender only after confirming what the restriction does.

Blanket restrictions can delay messaging, mail, calendar synchronization, health data, backups, and other background work. If notifications become late after a battery change, remove the restriction for that app and retest. Also check whether a newly installed or restored app is rebuilding a library or downloading data before concluding that the operating system is at fault.

Adjust display, lock-screen, sound, and home-screen preferences only if needed

These are comfort and workflow choices, not mandatory security repairs. Change them when the update altered a preference you care about, or when you want to take advantage of a feature in your installed release.

Display and refresh behavior

Search Settings for Display, brightness, or refresh rate. Review automatic brightness, the available refresh-rate modes, screen timeout, dark mode, and eye-comfort controls. Higher refresh modes can make scrolling feel smoother but may use more power; the available choices depend on the panel and software build.

Always-on and lock-screen options

Search for Always-On Display, lock screen, or ambient display. Decide whether you want clock, notification, or charging information visible and whether privacy settings should hide message text. Availability and design differ by model and ColorOS release.

Sound and vibration

Open Sound & vibration and test ringtone, media, alarm, haptic intensity, keyboard sounds, and vibration in silent mode. If calls or alarms seem absent, verify volume sliders and DND rules before changing unrelated permissions.

Home-screen layout

Check the launcher’s grid, icon size, app drawer, widgets, and default-home setting only if the update changed your workflow. If an icon is missing, use the app drawer or Settings search to determine whether the app was moved, disabled, or uninstalled; do not infer that a missing icon means data loss.

If the phone says OxygenOS instead of ColorOS

Use OxygenOS instructions for that device. The privacy and notification paths above that are explicitly identified as OxygenOS 14 examples can help you locate equivalent controls, but they are not universal promises for every OxygenOS build. Search by the setting name when a menu label differs.

This distinction matters because a global OnePlus phone may never have used ColorOS, while a mainland-China model may use a customized ColorOS build. The operating-system name shown in About device is more reliable than the phone’s retail origin, an online screenshot, or a generic post-update checklist.

What to do when a setting or feature is missing

  1. Confirm the model number, region, carrier, OS name, version, and security-update date.
  2. Search Settings using the function’s plain-language name, such as Permission manager, Special app access, Do Not Disturb, or refresh rate.
  3. Consult the manual for the installed release. ColorOS’s official manual index contains documentation for multiple releases; the correct version matters.
  4. Check OnePlus support or community information for the exact model and region if the feature is absent or the problem began immediately after the update.
  5. Install pending app updates and test in normal use before considering more disruptive recovery steps.

Rollouts can be staged, and OnePlus says availability may differ by model, country, and carrier. A feature shown in another region’s announcement may therefore be unavailable on your build without indicating a fault.

How to interpret ColorOS performance claims

OnePlus’s ColorOS 11 overview reports estimated laboratory-model results of 45% higher overall system resource utilization, 32% faster system response, and 17% higher frame-rate stability compared with an earlier ColorOS version. OnePlus labels these as vendor estimates; the page does not establish independent testing, and real-world benefits vary by device.

Those figures are not evidence that changing a post-update setting causes the improvement. Use your own battery-usage and notification observations to decide whether an individual app or preference needs adjustment.

A practical order for your first post-update check

  1. Identify: record model, OS/version, and security date in About device.
  2. Protect: verify your backup and confirm the update completed without an error.
  3. Authorize: review location, camera, microphone, photos/media, contacts, notification permission, and special app access.
  4. Reach: test critical notifications, lock-screen behavior, and DND schedules.
  5. Measure: inspect battery usage after ordinary use and target only abnormal apps.
  6. Personalize: change display, always-on, sound, vibration, or home-screen options only when they improve your workflow.
  7. Escalate: use the exact model and region when consulting OnePlus documentation or support.

This sequence separates security and reliability checks from optional preferences, while allowing for the real differences among ColorOS releases, OxygenOS builds, phone models, and regional rollouts.
