Short answer: The strongest evidence concerns climate components that are already changing measurably—ice-sheet mass, permafrost temperature and carbon, Arctic sea ice, and stressed forests. That evidence does not prove that any one system has crossed an abrupt, irreversible threshold. The largest uncertainties concern the location and timing of thresholds, especially for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and tropical-forest dieback.
A useful assessment separates five questions: what is changing, whether a nonlinear threshold exists, whether it has been crossed, how reversible the change is, and what impacts would follow. IPCC assessments consistently show that the risk of abrupt or irreversible change rises as warming increases, but they do not provide a single date when a named tipping element must fail.
What scientists mean by a climate tipping point
The IPCC uses “tipping point” for a large-scale singular event in which a physical, ecological or social system shifts abruptly, drastically and sometimes irreversibly as a driver such as warming changes gradually. Natural variability can influence when the shift appears. A strong trend or a sudden response is not, by itself, proof of a single irreversible threshold.

Keep these claims separate:
- Observed change: measurements or reconstructions show that a component is changing.
- Threshold behavior: evidence supports a nonlinear transition rather than a smooth response.
- Threshold crossing: observations indicate that the critical boundary has already been passed.
- Irreversibility and timing: the transition persists after forcing changes, and recovery may take decades, centuries or millennia.
- Impacts: the transition produces regional or global effects, whose size and likelihood may remain uncertain.
The IPCC’s statement that abrupt and/or irreversible changes become more likely with further warming is a risk assessment, not a forecast that one particular element will cross its threshold at a specified temperature.

Which candidates have the strongest evidence?
“Strongest evidence” depends on the claim being tested. Evidence that a system is changing is strongest for ice sheets, permafrost, Arctic sea ice and several forests. Evidence for a precise, irreversible threshold is much weaker and varies by system.
| Candidate | What is well established | What remains uncertain | Typical response timescale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets | Continued mass loss under sustained warming | Threshold location, rate of acceleration and extent of irreversible loss | Centuries to millennia for near-complete loss |
| Permafrost carbon | Warming and thaw release carbon, creating a positive feedback | Net carbon amount, nonlinear behavior and a global threshold temperature | Feedback develops over decades to centuries; recovery is likely not available on centennial timescales |
| Arctic sea ice | Rapid decline, including abrupt seasonal changes | No identified irreversible threshold; exact recovery timing after cooling | Years to decades, and assessed as reversible |
| AMOC | Paleoclimate evidence of abrupt past variations; possible modern weakening | Long-term observed trend, collapse conditions and timing | Potentially abrupt, but timing is not established |
| Amazon and other tropical forests | Warming, drying, deforestation and fire are stressing forests | Whether a climate-linked threshold will be crossed, and its spatial extent | Could unfold over decades; strongly dependent on human land use |
| Boreal forests | Climate stress and disturbance risks are recognized | Whether poleward expansion offsets dieback and whether a global threshold exists | Decades to longer, varying by region |
Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)
What the evidence shows
AMOC moves warm, salty surface water northward and returns colder, denser water at depth. Paleoclimate records show that large AMOC variations coincided with abrupt climate changes during glacial periods, making it a credible high-impact tipping candidate.

The IPCC AR6 Working Group I reports low agreement between model simulations and most reconstructions for the twentieth-century trend. It finds, with high confidence, that an observed decline since the mid-2000s cannot be distinguished from internal variability. The assessment gives medium confidence that an abrupt collapse will not occur before 2100. That is not a guarantee that collapse is impossible; it means an imminent collapse is not established by current evidence. These findings are summarized in the AR6 Working Group I Technical Summary and the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere, Chapter 6.
Numbers that are often misread
In an AR6 assessment table, projected AMOC strength declines relative to pre-industrial conditions by 29% at 1.5–2°C warming, 32% at 2–3°C, and 39% at 3–5°C by 2100. These are projected percentage declines under warming ranges, not probabilities of collapse and not evidence that a threshold has been crossed.

Why uncertainty is large
- The measured record is short compared with AMOC variability.
- Natural variability can resemble a forced trend.
- The freshwater, heat and circulation conditions required for a transition are not tightly bounded.
- Models and reconstructions disagree about the magnitude of twentieth-century change.
A collapse could alter rainfall, the Asian summer monsoon, Sahel rainfall, sea level around Atlantic coasts and European winter storms. These are potential consequences of a hypothetical transition, not guaranteed outcomes of a near-term event.
Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets
Observed mass loss versus irreversible loss
Satellite, gravity and field measurements show continuing ice-sheet mass loss. This is stronger evidence than claims about a single tipping temperature. Sustained warming raises the risk of faster loss and eventual near-complete or complete loss, but the relevant timescales are very long.
AR6 Working Group I reports limited evidence for almost complete and irreversible Greenland and West Antarctic loss over multiple millennia at sustained warming of 2–3°C. At 3–5°C, it assesses near-complete Greenland loss and complete West Antarctic loss over multiple millennia with medium confidence. These statements do not predict complete ice-sheet loss by 2100.
Threshold behavior and sea-level uncertainty
AR6 Working Group II describes high confidence that Greenland exhibits threshold behavior in a warmer climate, but low agreement about the precise nature of its thresholds and associated tipping points. Ice-shelf breakup, marine ice-sheet processes and feedbacks make very high sea-level outcomes deeply uncertain. A robust observation of present loss therefore cannot be converted into a precise date for an irreversible collapse.
The IPCC’s Chapter 12 assessment provides the warming ranges and confidence statements.

Permafrost carbon
A powerful feedback without a known global switch
Permafrost soils contain carbon accumulated over thousands of years. Warming thaws some of this ground, allowing microbes to release carbon dioxide and, in waterlogged conditions, methane. Those emissions add warming, which can promote further thaw: a positive feedback.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAR6 Working Group I estimates the permafrost-carbon feedback at approximately 18 ± 12 petagrams of carbon per °C of global warming. This is an assessment estimate, not a fixed release rate for every region or year. The report assigns low confidence to the threshold for possible nonlinear behavior. In other words, warming-driven thaw is well supported, but scientists cannot identify one globally valid temperature at which permafrost suddenly tips.
What is likely to be irreversible
Permafrost carbon loss is considered likely irreversible on centennial timescales. Cooling could eventually refreeze some ground, but rebuilding the frozen soil carbon system and its ecological conditions would take far longer than a human planning horizon. The main uncertainties concern the net balance of carbon dioxide and methane, abrupt thaw processes, hydrology, vegetation responses and the amount of carbon that actually reaches the atmosphere.
The permafrost estimate and its confidence qualifier appear in the AR6 Working Group I assessment table.
Amazon and other tropical forests
Climate stress interacts with direct human pressure
Amazon forests respond to rainfall, temperature, drought, fire, fragmentation and deforestation together. Removing trees reduces moisture recycling; hotter and drier conditions can increase fire and mortality. Because these drivers reinforce one another, a regional forest transition cannot be attributed to climate alone.

AR6 Working Group I says the combination of climate change and human disturbance is expected to alter the regional water cycle and could be linked to crossing a climate threshold. It assigns low confidence to whether a climate-linked threshold will be crossed by 2100. AR6 Working Group II lists tropical-forest ecosystem loss among risks that rise across warming levels.
Why a single “Amazon collapse date” is misleading
There is no settled date or universal temperature for Amazon dieback. Threshold character, timing and spatial extent depend on rainfall patterns, drought sequencing, land-use decisions and fire. Some areas could degrade while others remain forested or recover. Claims that name one year for total Amazon collapse go beyond the confidence of the IPCC assessments.

Arctic sea ice provides a critical test of terminology. Its decline has been rapid, and individual summers can show abrupt losses. Yet AR6 Working Group I assesses with high confidence that sea-ice loss is reversible over years to decades and finds no threshold beyond which the loss becomes irreversible.
That does not make the decline harmless: less summer ice changes albedo, ecosystems, navigation conditions and regional climate. It does show why “abrupt” and “irreversible” must not be treated as synonyms. The assessment table in AR6 Working Group I Chapter 12 records this distinction.

Boreal forests and other candidates
AR6 Working Group I identifies boreal-forest dieback as possible if a climate threshold is exceeded. Warmer conditions may also allow forests to expand poleward, partly offsetting losses in some regions. Fire, pests, logging and other disturbances can determine which effect dominates. The evidence supports treating boreal forests as a candidate with important regional risks, not as an established global tipping event.
A practical framework for judging evidence
When a headline claims that a tipping point is near or already passed, evaluate the claim on seven separate axes:
| Axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Observed change | Do measurements or reconstructions show a persistent change? |
| Threshold evidence | Is there a nonlinear transition, or only a response that may still be gradual? |
| Threshold location | Is a critical warming level known, bounded, or poorly constrained? |
| Timing | Would the change occur over years, decades, centuries or millennia? |
| Reversibility | Would stabilization or cooling reverse it, and on what timescale? |
| Human influence | Do land use, deforestation, fire or other direct pressures alter the transition? |
| Impacts | Which regional or global effects are assessed, and with what confidence? |
This framework prevents a measured trend from being presented as proof of a crossed threshold. It also keeps a high-impact possibility, such as AMOC disruption, from being mistaken for a near-term forecast.
How warming levels change the overall risk
The IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report assesses a high-risk transition range for large-scale singular events or tipping points at approximately 1.5–2.5°C of warming, with medium confidence, and a very-high-risk range at approximately 2.5–4°C, with low confidence. These are aggregate risk categories across multiple possible events, not precise thresholds for Greenland, AMOC, permafrost or any other single element.
Risk rises with warming even when scientists cannot specify the exact threshold. That is why uncertainty is not reassurance: it widens the range of possible outcomes, including some severe outcomes, rather than proving that they will occur.
Read the full confidence language in the IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report Summary for Policymakers.
Quick Recap
What can responsibly be said today?
- Ice sheets are losing mass, permafrost is warming and releasing carbon, Arctic sea ice is declining, and forests are under increasing stress.
- Those observations provide strong evidence of ongoing change, not a universal finding that irreversible thresholds have already been crossed.
- Greenland has assessed threshold behavior in a warmer climate, but its threshold location and long-term rate remain uncertain.
- Permafrost carbon loss is a substantial feedback with a poorly constrained nonlinear threshold and likely centennial irreversibility.
- AMOC remains a high-impact possibility, yet current assessments do not establish an imminent collapse.
- Amazon and boreal-forest outcomes depend heavily on interacting climate and human disturbances.
- Arctic sea-ice loss demonstrates that abrupt change can still be reversible.
