Buy Civilization VI Anthology if you want the publisher-described complete package. It includes the base game, Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, six New Frontier Pass DLC packs, six Leader Pass DLC packs, and additional leader and scenario DLC. Buy the base game if you want to start with the core experience and add content later. Your best value depends on what you already own, your platform, and the live regional price shown by that platform’s store.

What each Civilization VI purchase actually means
Base game: the starting point
The base game is the core Civilization VI product and is listed separately on major PC storefronts. It is the cleanest choice when you want to learn the standard game before committing to extra content, or when the base game is heavily discounted and you plan to build your collection gradually.

Rise and Fall
Rise and Fall is one of the two major expansions named in the publisher’s Anthology description. It is sold as a distinct product in some storefronts and may also appear inside complete bundles. If you are buying it separately, confirm that the store is applying it to the same platform and account as your base game.
Gathering Storm
Gathering Storm is the other major expansion named by the publisher. The store listing states that it requires Civilization VI to play, so it should be treated as an add-on rather than a standalone game. If you see a low price for Gathering Storm, check that you already own the base game—or that the bundle you are viewing includes it.
New Frontier Pass
The New Frontier Pass contains six DLC packs. The six-count is a content count, not a discount guarantee or a measure of gameplay hours. If a store offers the pass and Anthology together, compare the package contents instead of assuming that the pass is an upgrade to every other add-on.
Leader Pass
The current official Anthology description includes six Leader Pass DLC packs. Some storefront pages may have been created earlier or may list the pass separately, so check the dated product description and the “included” section for the edition you are about to purchase.
Additional leader and scenario DLC
Beyond the two named passes, the publisher says Anthology includes additional leader and scenario DLC packs. This wording is broader than a simple base-game-plus-two-expansions bundle. If a specific leader or scenario matters to you, look for its name in the platform’s itemized contents rather than relying only on the Anthology label.

Why Anthology is usually the simplest choice for a new buyer
Anthology puts the base game and the publisher-described expansion and pass content in one purchase. That removes the most common uncertainty for a first-time buyer: accidentally purchasing the base game and then discovering that several major add-ons are still separate.
It is not automatically the cheapest option in every region or sale. Storefront prices, discounts, taxes, currencies, and bundle rules change. A base-game purchase can be the better first step if you are unsure whether you will continue playing, if you only want the core game, or if the complete bundle is not discounted when you buy.

Anthology is also not automatically the right second purchase for an existing owner. A store may reduce the bundle price based on products already in your library, but there is no universal ownership-adjusted price. Compare the displayed total after signing in, not a headline price seen while logged out.
Use this four-part decision framework
1. List the content you actually want
Write down whether you need only the base game, one major expansion, both expansions, one of the passes, or the broadest available collection. This prevents a familiar bundle name from deciding for you.
- Core-only trial: base game.
- One targeted add-on: base game plus the named expansion or pass.
- Broad collection: Anthology, subject to the store’s itemized contents.
2. Audit what your account already owns
Open your platform library and the Civilization VI downloadable-content section. Record the base game, each expansion, each pass, and any individual packs you already own. Then view Anthology while signed in. If the store supports ownership-aware bundles, its displayed price should reflect eligible items, but the exact calculation is platform-specific.

3. Confirm platform availability
Edition names and DLC availability can differ between PC and console storefronts. The publisher’s Xbox Windows PC listing identifies the base game, Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, individual civilization and scenario packs, and New Frontier Pass among Anthology’s contents. The fuller publisher description also names Leader Pass and additional leader and scenario DLC. Use the listing for your exact platform to resolve any difference.

Prices and sale terms are regional and change frequently. Compare these two totals on the same day:
- Base game plus every add-on you want.
- Anthology, with any ownership adjustment applied.
Include taxes or other checkout charges shown by your store. There is no stable, region-independent price that can settle this comparison for everyone.
How to check DLC ownership and install it
The exact menus depend on the storefront, but the official support guidance follows a consistent pattern.
- Open the store page for the Civilization VI base game.
- Scroll to the downloadable-content, add-ons, or bundle section.
- Search the platform store directly if a pack is not shown on the base-game page.
- Open the platform’s DLC management screen for Civilization VI.
- Check whether each item is marked owned, installed, available to install, or unavailable for your platform.
- Install the selected content, then launch Civilization VI and confirm that the relevant content appears in the game’s additional-content or setup menus.
On Epic, support guidance says DLC included with a game download is usually downloaded during the initial download. That behavior does not establish identical behavior on other launchers, so check the launcher’s own installation status before troubleshooting the game.

Mistake: treating every “complete” label as identical

Purchase scenarios
You have never bought Civilization VI
Choose Anthology if you want the publisher-described full collection and the live price is reasonable for your region. Choose the base game if you prefer a lower initial commitment or want to decide about expansions after learning the core game.
You own only the base game
Compare the signed-in Anthology price with the combined price of the expansions and passes you want. Anthology may be convenient, but the store’s ownership calculation—not a general rule—determines whether it is financially preferable.
