The most effective first change is Chromebook’s built-in Battery Saver: open Settings > System preferences > Power and turn it on when you are running on battery. It combines several power-saving actions, including lower display brightness, disabled keyboard backlighting, Chrome Energy Saver, Android Battery Saver for apps, and CPU throttling.
Next, set the Chromebook to sleep sooner while it is inactive on battery, and close the lid whenever you finish using it. Google does not publish a fixed number of extra minutes or a percentage improvement for these settings, so treat them as ways to reduce power use rather than a guaranteed runtime figure.
1. Turn on Battery Saver first
Battery Saver is the best starting point because one control applies several changes at once. You can reach it from the battery icon in the shelf or through the full Settings app.

- Click the battery icon near the clock, then open the power controls. Alternatively, open Settings.
- Select System preferences > Power.
- Turn on Battery Saver.
Battery Saver is available while the Chromebook is operating on battery, not while it is plugged in. If you have not enabled it manually, ChromeOS may activate it automatically when the charge is low. Connecting the charger turns Battery Saver off.

If the switch is unavailable while you are plugged in, that is expected behavior rather than a fault. Unplug the charger and check the same Power page again. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator can also control power-management policies, so some options may be hidden or locked.
2. Know exactly what Battery Saver changes
Battery Saver is a bundle, not a single brightness slider. The following table shows each documented action and the trade-off to consider before enabling it.

These changes explain why Battery Saver can help without a separate setting for every component. They also explain why it is not ideal for every moment: a dimmer screen, no keyboard lighting, or reduced CPU speed may be inconvenient even though each reduces power demand.

Brightness is the part of Battery Saver you are most likely to want to control independently. If you need the keyboard backlight or full processor speed but can work with a dimmer display, leave Battery Saver off and lower brightness manually.

- Open Settings.
- Use the Settings search field and enter display or monitor.
- Open the matching display setting and move the brightness control to the lowest level that remains comfortable.
The goal is a readable screen, not the darkest possible screen. A display that is too dim can lead you to increase it repeatedly, defeating the point of the adjustment. Recheck brightness when moving between a dark room, an office, and outdoor light because the comfortable level changes with the surroundings.
4. Make the Chromebook sleep sooner when idle
An open Chromebook can continue using power after you walk away. ChromeOS gives you separate idle controls for battery operation and charging.
- Open Settings > System preferences > Power.
- Find the option labeled While inactive and on battery.
- Choose a behavior that puts the Chromebook to sleep when it is not being used.
- Review While inactive and plugged in separately. You may prefer a longer delay while charging so that the screen stays available during a presentation or download.
Closing the lid also puts the Chromebook to sleep, according to Google’s Chromebook Help documentation. Make that your default habit when you finish a mobile session instead of leaving the lid open on a desk or in a bag.

5. Do not use the screen saver as a mobile battery trick
ChromeOS screen savers are designed to run while the Chromebook is charging. Google says they run only while charging to conserve battery, and the Chromebook does not sleep while the screen saver is running.
That means enabling a screen saver will not improve battery life during mobile use. On battery, an idle-sleep setting is the relevant control; while charging, a screen saver can remain active without being a battery-saving measure.
6. Choose settings according to the work you are doing
Battery Saver is appropriate when preserving charge matters more than peak responsiveness or illuminated keys. You can switch it off temporarily for a demanding task, then turn it back on before returning to battery-powered work.
For ordinary web and document work
Use Battery Saver, keep brightness at a comfortable low level, and set the on-battery inactive action to sleep. This combination addresses the screen, browser, processor, and idle periods without requiring individual app changes.

For dark-room typing
The keyboard-backlight change is the important trade-off. If you need illuminated keys, disable Battery Saver for that session and manage brightness separately, or work with the room lighting adjusted so the keyboard remains visible.
For processor-heavy tasks
CPU throttling can make demanding browser tabs or Android apps feel less responsive. If a task needs full speed, connect the charger when possible or turn Battery Saver off temporarily. Re-enable it after the task rather than leaving the higher-power mode on for the rest of the day.
For a Chromebook carried between meetings
Set the on-battery inactive behavior to sleep and close the lid whenever you leave. This prevents an open, unattended session from consuming charge while you are walking or working elsewhere.

Battery Saver cannot be enabled
First check whether the charger is connected; Battery Saver is unavailable while plugged in. If you are on battery and the option is still absent, the Chromebook may be managed by an administrator or running a policy that controls power settings.

The screen did not become as dim as expected
Battery Saver lowers brightness, but it does not promise a particular brightness level. Use the display or monitor search result in Settings to adjust it manually to a comfortable level.
The keyboard lighting disappeared
That is an intended Battery Saver action. Turn Battery Saver off when backlighting is essential, then lower display brightness independently if you still want to reduce power use.
The Chromebook stays awake after you walk away
Check Settings > System preferences > Power > While inactive and on battery and choose a sleep behavior. Also check whether a managed-device policy or an application wake lock is preventing idle sleep. Closing the lid should put the Chromebook to sleep unless an administrator has imposed a different policy.
The screen saver is running and the device is not sleeping
That is normal while charging: ChromeOS keeps the device awake while the screen saver is active. Disable the screen saver or wait for charging to finish if you need the Chromebook to enter sleep instead.
8. What Google does—and does not—promise about battery gains
Google’s Chromebook Help pages describe the actions Battery Saver performs, but they do not publish a measured runtime increase, a percentage improvement, or a laboratory comparison for these settings. Do not treat a particular number of extra hours as guaranteed.
Your result depends on how the Chromebook is being used, the brightness level you choose, whether keyboard lighting is needed, how often the device is idle, and which browser or Android workloads are active. The settings are still useful because they reduce known sources of power use and prevent avoidable drain while the Chromebook is unattended.
For a practical check, note the battery percentage before a typical work session, use the same type of tasks on another session, and compare the result only as a personal observation. That is not an official benchmark and should not be generalized to other Chromebook models or workloads.
