The best cheap streaming device depends on your TV and the apps your household uses. Choose an HD model for a 1080p television or the lowest upfront cost; consider 4K when your TV supports it and you want compatible 4K content. The five options below span Roku, Fire TV, and Google TV, but the Consumer Reports scores cited are its 2026 results—not hands-on testing by itechguides.com—and prices can change.

Those scores reflect Consumer Reports’ tests; they are not a direct head-to-head ranking established here. The Amazon Fire TV Stick HD is included as an HD-focused alternative, but the cited guide figures do not establish a comparable score or price for it.

How to choose without paying for unused features
Match the resolution to your television
If the TV is 1080p, an HD player can be the sensible low-cost choice. A 4K player is useful when the television supports 4K and you plan to watch 4K content; it cannot make a non-4K television display native 4K. Check the content service and title as well as the TV and player.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck HDR and audio as a complete chain
HDR formats only help when the streaming device, television, and content all support the same format. Roku lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for its Streaming Stick 4K; Amazon lists both formats and Dolby Atmos for the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus. These specifications do not guarantee that every title or app offers those formats, or that a TV supports them.

Consider Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and power
Roku emphasizes long-range Wi-Fi on the Streaming Stick 4K, while Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6 for the cited Fire TV models. A newer Wi-Fi specification does not by itself guarantee better streaming: router capability, distance, interference, and internet service also matter. If you need wired networking, confirm adapter compatibility and cost; Amazon says Ethernet on the Fire TV Stick HD requires an adapter. For direct TV USB power, verify that the TV port can power the device reliably.
Choose the platform and remote your household will use
Roku and Fire TV have different interfaces and app ecosystems. Pick the one that fits your household’s preferred services and navigation style. Also check the exact remote: Roku advertises TV power and volume controls on its Voice Remote, and Amazon lists dedicated power and volume buttons on the 4K Plus remote. Remote features can vary by model or bundle.

Compare total cost, not just the device price
A streaming player does not automatically include paid subscriptions. Account for any services you intend to use and accessories such as an Ethernet adapter. Treat listed prices as snapshots: Consumer Reports calls its prices approximate retail, while the Roku and Fire TV deals above were time-limited reports from October 2026.

It can serve as the main way to watch television over an internet connection, but it does not reproduce a cable or satellite subscription automatically. Roku says its players can be used for internet-delivered live channels, news, sports, and on-demand entertainment. Whether that covers your household depends on which services and channels you subscribe to, whether they carry the programming you want, and your internet connection. Roku’s player comparison page
