For a U.S. Epson WorkForce WF-7610, shop by cartridge code rather than by a generic “Epson ink” description. The printer uses the 252 family: T252120 black, T252220 cyan, T252320 magenta and T252420 yellow. The high-capacity versions are T252XL120, T252XL220, T252XL320 and T252XL420. Epson’s U.S. support page also lists T254XL120 as an extra-high-capacity black option. Region, capacity, delivered price and return terms determine whether a listing is genuinely economical; no single seller or third-party cartridge can be called the cheapest from the available evidence.
WF-7610 ink codes at a glance
The safest way to avoid a costly mistake is to match the full code, color and printer model. Epson identifies these cartridges for the WorkForce WF-7610 on its U.S. support page:

The WF-7610/WF-7620 user guide also lists 252 and 252XL across all four colors and includes 254XL black in its relevant regional table. Cartridge codes are not universal worldwide, so a code that looks familiar can still be wrong for a printer purchased in another market.

A low sticker price is only one part of the cost. A cartridge can be inexpensive yet waste money if it is for the wrong region, omits a color you need, has a lower capacity than expected, or cannot be returned after the printer rejects it. For the WF-7610, compare the following as one package:

- Explicit WorkForce WF-7610 compatibility in the listing, not just a claim that it fits “252 printers.”
- Standard 252, high-capacity 252XL or black-only 254XL capacity.
- Whether the offer is a single cartridge, a color-specific bundle or a four-color multipack.
- Total delivered price, including shipping and taxes shown at checkout.
- Return or replacement terms if a cartridge is not recognized or produces poor output.
- Evidence behind any stated page yield, including the test basis and whether the number applies to that exact capacity.
Current prices, seller quality and a verified third-party winner were not established for this model. Treat any “cheapest” headline as a claim to check, not as a fact. A listing that is cheaper before shipping may cost more after delivery, while a multipack may leave you paying for colors you rarely use.
Confirm your region before ordering
Epson’s cartridge catalogue is regional. The U.S. support page is the right starting point for a U.S.-market WF-7610, while the user guide contains Australia/New Zealand-specific information and warns that not every cartridge is available in every region. Epson Australia’s back catalogue shows regional DURABrite Ultra 252, 252XL and 254XL items, but its catalogue prices are Australia-specific and can change; they are not universal online prices.
If your printer was bought outside the United States, use the support page or manual for that market and compare the code printed on the cartridge currently installed. Do not assume that a U.S. T252XL code, an Australian catalogue item or a listing that merely says “252XL” will work everywhere. Ask the seller to confirm both the destination region and the exact WF-7610 model before paying.

252, 252XL or 254XL: choosing capacity
Standard 252
Standard 252 cartridges are the baseline family: T252120, T252220, T252320 and T252420. They make sense when you print infrequently, want to replace only one color, or find a documented price that is materially lower than the XL equivalent. Do not infer value from the code alone; compare the seller’s stated yield and delivered price for the specific cartridge.
High-capacity 252XL
252XL is Epson’s high-capacity family for all four colors. The codes are T252XL120 (black), T252XL220 (cyan), T252XL320 (magenta) and T252XL420 (yellow). It is usually the first family to check when you print regularly, but “XL” is not a promise of a particular number of pages under every workload. Epson says yield changes with the images printed, print settings, paper type, frequency of use and temperature.
Extra-high-capacity 254XL black
Epson’s U.S. support page lists T254XL120 as an extra-high-capacity black cartridge. Because availability and code variants are regional, confirm that the listing identifies your region and the WF-7610 specifically. Do not substitute 254XL black for a color cartridge, and do not assume a seller’s generic “254” description identifies the correct item.

Single colors versus multipacks
Buying a single cartridge lets you replace the color that has actually run out and avoids storing unused ink. A four-color pack can be convenient when all four codes are correct and its delivered total is lower than buying each item separately. Check that the pack contains the same capacity family throughout; a listing can combine a high-capacity black with standard colors, which changes the comparison. For a color-specific pack, verify every code rather than relying on a product photograph.
Genuine Epson versus compatible, remanufactured and refill options
Epson’s own position is clear. Its WF-7610/WF-7620 guide says, “We recommend that you use genuine Epson cartridges and do not refill them.” It also warns, “The use of other products may affect your print quality and could result in printer damage.” Those statements are the manufacturer’s recommendation and warning; they are not independent tests proving that every compatible or remanufactured cartridge fails.

Use the label “third-party” when evaluating these products. A seller’s statement that a cartridge is “OEM equivalent,” “firmware safe” or “guaranteed” is not the same as documented testing for your printer. Keep a copy of the listing and its compatibility language until the cartridge has worked through your normal print routine.
How to compare value without inventing a cost-per-page
Advertised yield is not a fixed result for every WF-7610 owner. Epson notes that images, print settings, paper type, use frequency and temperature all affect how much ink is consumed. The guide also explains that some ink remains after the replace-cartridge indicator appears. Consequently, a simple calculation based on one headline yield can give a false impression of savings.
If a listing supplies a price and a comparable yield measured under a stated method, you can calculate:
cost per page = delivered cartridge price ÷ stated page yield
Use that calculation only when the price, capacity, color and yield basis match. Do not compare a black-only yield with a four-color page estimate, mix standard and XL capacities, or treat an undated seller claim as a laboratory result. If the listing gives no comparable yield, compare the delivered price and capacity category qualitatively instead of publishing a made-up number.

For a practical shortlist, record each candidate in the same order:
- Write down the exact code, color and capacity.
- Copy the seller’s stated yield and any test standard or coverage assumption.
- Add shipping and other checkout charges to the item price.
- Note whether the item is genuine, new compatible, remanufactured or refill supply.
- Read the return window and exclusions for opened or installed cartridges.
- Save the listing date, because price, stock and regional availability can change.
A step-by-step buying process
1. Identify the printer’s market
Check where the WF-7610 was purchased and consult the matching Epson support material. If you cannot establish the market, photograph the code on the installed cartridge and ask the seller to confirm it before ordering.
2. Choose the replacement color
Replace only the color the printer identifies as empty unless you deliberately want a complete set. Record black, cyan, magenta or yellow so a similarly named listing cannot substitute another color.
3. Select the exact capacity family
Choose 252, 252XL or, where the regional listing confirms it, 254XL black. The suffix is part of the product identity, not an optional description.
4. Read the compatibility line
The listing should explicitly name Epson WorkForce WF-7610 and show the complete code. A compatibility grid that lists only a broad cartridge family is weaker evidence than a code-by-code statement.

For packs, confirm the number of cartridges, every color, and whether the capacities are mixed. Check that the photographs and written description agree; use the written code as the deciding detail.
6. Compare delivered totals and protection
Calculate the checkout total and read the return terms before placing the order. A low item price with expensive delivery or no remedy for a defective cartridge is not a reliable bargain.

7. Keep documentation
Save the invoice, listing and code. If the printer does not accept the cartridge, that information gives the seller a precise basis for troubleshooting or a return.
What to know before refilling a 252 cartridge
Refilling is different from buying a new compatible cartridge or a remanufactured one. With a refill, you are adding ink to an existing cartridge or using a refill service; the cartridge’s electronics, seals and internal ink path remain relevant. Epson specifically recommends not refilling its cartridges, so a refill should be treated as a higher-uncertainty, third-party choice rather than an endorsed maintenance method.
Before buying refill ink or a service, verify all of the following:
- The refill is intended for the 252 or 252XL cartridge family fitted to your regional WF-7610.
- The ink formulation and color labels match the cartridge being refilled.
- The seller explains how it handles cartridges that are empty, leaking or not recognized.
- The advertised process distinguishes a refill from a remanufactured replacement.
- There is a usable return or support route if print quality deteriorates.
- Any statement about printer firmware is specific, dated and tied to your model rather than a generic promise.
A refill can also make comparisons difficult because the amount of ink added, the condition of the original cartridge and the seller’s testing method may differ. Do not present a refill’s claimed page count as directly comparable with a factory cartridge unless the listing documents the same measurement basis.

A code that omits the model
“252XL compatible” by itself does not establish WF-7610 support. Require the model name and full code in the written listing.
A regional mismatch
Packaging that looks identical can represent a different regional catalogue. Confirm the market before ordering, especially when the listing ships internationally.

A pack may contain XL black and standard colors, or the reverse. Compare each code and do not use the pack’s headline capacity as a substitute for its contents.

Yield claims without conditions
Because Epson identifies several variables that change yield, a bare page number is not enough for a fair cost comparison. Look for the test basis or leave yield out of the calculation.
Unclear product type
Words such as “recycled,” “refill,” “remanufactured” and “compatible” describe different supply routes. If the listing does not say which one it is, ask before purchase.
Return exclusions
Some sellers distinguish unopened returns from installed cartridges. Read those terms before breaking a seal, and retain the packaging until the printer has recognized the cartridge and produced acceptable output.

- Match the code and color on the delivered package with the order and your printer’s requirement.
- Inspect the package for leakage or damage before installation.
- Install it using the WF-7610’s on-screen prompts and the instructions in Epson’s user guide.
- Run the printer’s normal quality check or a small test print rather than committing immediately to a long job.
- If the printer does not recognize the cartridge or output is unacceptable, stop using it, document the message or defect, and contact the seller under the stated return or replacement terms.
Do not mix up a cartridge-recognition problem with a color-specific quality problem when reporting it. Give the seller the exact code, color, capacity, printer region and any message shown by the WF-7610.
When genuine Epson is the sensible economy choice
Genuine Epson is the least ambiguous option when predictable compatibility, manufacturer documentation and a clear support path matter more than the lowest advertised price. That does not make every genuine cartridge the cheapest purchase: compare the delivered total and the capacity you will actually use. If you print rarely, buying one standard color when needed may avoid storing a larger cartridge; if you print frequently, a correctly matched 252XL or regionally confirmed 254XL black may reduce replacement frequency. Those are purchasing decisions, not guarantees of a lower cost per page.
When a third-party option may be considered
A new compatible, remanufactured cartridge or refill may appeal to a price-focused owner who accepts more uncertainty and has a practical return route. Keep the decision narrow: match the exact code, region, model and color; evaluate the seller’s evidence; and avoid claims that cannot be verified. There is no basis here to rank one unnamed third-party product type as universally safer, longer-lasting or cheaper than another.
Bottom line: buy by code, region and evidence
For a U.S. WF-7610, start with the 252 family and its exact color code; check 252XL for high capacity and verify T254XL120 before choosing extra-high-capacity black. Then compare genuine Epson with clearly labeled third-party alternatives using the same delivered-price, capacity, yield-evidence and return-policy criteria. Epson advises against refilling and cautions that other products can affect quality or damage the printer, so treat refills and compatibles as choices that require careful verification—not as guaranteed savings.
