The fastest iPhone charger is not automatically the one with the biggest wattage number. Match the adapter’s USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and, on newer models, Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) capability to your exact iPhone, then use a cable rated for the required power. Apple’s current guidance sets different thresholds for each generation, so a charger that is suitable for one iPhone may be unnecessary or insufficient for another.
For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple specifies a 60W-capable USB-C cable and a 60W-or-higher adapter with AVS. Apple’s third-party comparison threshold is USB-PD 3.2. The iPhone 17 family, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air and earlier models have different requirements. The table below is the quickest way to identify the right class of charger.
iPhone fast-charging requirements at a glance
| iPhone models | Apple’s approximate wired target | Adapter requirement | Cable and protocol notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max | Around 50% in around 15 minutes | 60W or greater with AVS; Apple’s named option is the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max | 60W-capable USB-C cable. Apple’s third-party wording specifies USB-PD 3.2; its testing note says USB-PD 3.1 or better with AVS. |
| iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max | Around 50% in around 20 minutes | 40W or higher. Apple’s adapter guide recommends 40W continuous sustained output and up to 60W maximum output, with AVS combinations and a USB-C port. | Use a USB-C cable appropriate for the phone and adapter. Confirm the adapter supports USB-PD and the stated output profile. |
| iPhone 17e and iPhone Air | Around 50% in around 30 minutes | 20W or higher | Use a compatible USB-C charging setup and verify the exact model before buying. |
| iPhone 15 and later, other than the models above | Apple’s page does not give one shared time target for every model in this group | Apple’s listed option is an 18W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter or a comparable third-party USB-C adapter supporting USB-PD. | These iPhones use a USB-C cable. |
| Earlier iPhone models | Apple’s page does not give one shared time target for every model in this group | An 18W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter or comparable third-party USB-C adapter supporting USB-PD is the listed wired option. | Earlier phones can use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Check the individual model before choosing a cable. |
The figures in the first three rows are Apple’s approximate manufacturer test targets, not guarantees for every charger or every charging session. The detailed requirements come from Apple’s Fast charge your iPhone article and its Power adapters for iPhone guide.

USB Power Delivery is the negotiation protocol
USB-PD allows the iPhone and charger to negotiate a supported voltage and current instead of blindly applying the adapter’s maximum rating. Apple references USB-PD for compatible third-party chargers, so a USB-C adapter that merely has a high wattage printed on its case is not automatically a fast-charge solution.

AVS provides adjustable voltage
AVS, or Adjustable Voltage Supply, is the adjustable-voltage capability Apple calls for in its newer guidance. For the iPhone 18 Pro generation, Apple’s wording requires AVS in addition to the power rating. A product labeled “60W” without an AVS specification does not demonstrate compliance with that requirement.
USB-PD versions matter on the newest phones
Apple’s third-party comparison language for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max specifically names USB-PD 3.2. Apple’s testing note uses the wording “USB PD 3.1 (or better) power adapters with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS).” Treat those as two related but distinct statements: use the more specific 3.2 threshold when comparing third-party products, and retain the 3.1-or-better wording when describing Apple’s test setup.
Continuous output is different from a peak number
Apple’s guide distinguishes sustained output from maximum output for the iPhone 17 family. A charger may advertise a brief peak while providing a lower continuous level. For a reliable comparison, check the sustained output, the available USB-C port profile and the maximum output separately. A larger peak number is not a substitute for the required negotiated profile.

How the requirements differ by iPhone generation
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
These models have the most demanding wired setup in Apple’s current guidance. Use the included USB-C cable if it is the 60W-capable cable Apple specifies, or replace it with a cable that explicitly carries that rating. The adapter must provide at least 60W and AVS; for a third-party comparison, look for USB-PD 3.2 as well. Apple names its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max as a compatible reference, illustrating why a charger’s sustained and maximum figures both deserve attention.
Do not infer suitability from a generic “60W USB-C” label. The label needs to be accompanied by the required protocol and AVS details. If a listing omits those specifications, it is an unknown rather than a confirmed match.
iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max
Apple’s guidance places these phones in a lower power class than the iPhone 18 Pro models. Its adapter guide recommends a USB-C adapter capable of 40W continuous sustained output and up to 60W maximum output, with AVS output combinations. This is a useful distinction when comparing multi-port chargers: verify what the USB-C port can sustain while other ports are in use, not only the total wattage printed on the charger.

iPhone 17e and iPhone Air
Apple lists a 20W-or-higher adapter for these models. You still need a compatible cable and a USB-C charging path, but buying a substantially larger adapter does not by itself create a faster result than the phone supports.
iPhone 15 and earlier
Apple’s fast-charge article groups iPhone 15 and later with USB-C cables, while earlier models can use USB-C-to-Lightning. The listed wired adapter class is an Apple 18W-or-greater USB-C adapter or a comparable third-party USB-C adapter that supports USB-PD. Because connector and model capabilities vary within older generations, identify the exact iPhone in Settings or on the device packaging before selecting a cable.
A practical charger-selection procedure
- Identify the exact iPhone model. Open Settings, choose General, then About, and note the model name. Do not rely only on the year you bought it; several models share a release period but have different charging requirements.
- Choose wired or wireless charging. The AVS and USB-PD requirements in the table apply to wired charging. MagSafe has its own adapter thresholds, covered below.
- Read the adapter’s technical specifications. Confirm the USB-C port’s continuous output, maximum output, USB-PD version and, where required, AVS. Treat an unspecified protocol as unverified.
- Match the cable rating and connector. The iPhone 18 Pro requirement is a 60W-capable USB-C cable. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C; earlier models may need USB-C-to-Lightning.
- Check multi-port behavior. On a multi-port unit, read the output table for the USB-C port when other devices are connected. The advertised total may be shared, reducing the port’s available sustained output.
- Use a known-good wall outlet and cable. A loose connection, damaged cable or low-quality extension can cause slow charging or repeated connect-disconnect cycles even when the adapter is correctly rated.
- Allow for thermal and usage conditions. Start charging with the phone in a ventilated place, remove heat-trapping coverings if safe, and avoid demanding games or navigation while checking charging performance.
Apple adapter versus a comparable third-party USB-PD/AVS adapter
| Comparison point | Apple-branded option | Third-party option |
|---|---|---|
| How compatibility is established | Apple names specific adapter capabilities and, for some models, a reference adapter. | The product must document the required USB-PD version, AVS support, port profile and sustained output. |
| Wattage interpretation | Apple publishes both continuous and maximum figures where relevant. | Check whether the headline wattage is peak, shared across ports or available continuously. |
| Cable responsibility | The included cable may meet the phone’s stated rating; verify its specification. | Buy or verify a cable with the model’s required rating and connector. |
| Evidence for charging times | Apple publishes its own approximate test targets. | Do not assume the same target without product-specific evidence under comparable conditions. |
The practical advantage of Apple’s adapter is clear documentation in Apple’s own compatibility guidance. A third-party adapter can be suitable when its specifications explicitly meet the same requirements. This comparison does not establish a ranking of brands, prices or inventory; those change by region and date.

MagSafe is a separate charging decision
MagSafe charging should not be evaluated with the wired AVS table. Apple’s current guidance gives iPhone 18 Pro models an approximate 50%-in-around-30-minutes MagSafe target when paired with an adapter rated at 35W or higher.
For iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, Apple lists a 30W-or-higher Apple USB-C adapter or a comparable USB-PD adapter for MagSafe. For iPhone 15 and earlier, the listed requirement is a 20W-or-higher Apple USB-C adapter or comparable USB-PD adapter. The MagSafe charger, alignment, case thickness and heat can affect the result, so do not compare a wireless session directly with the wired figures in the first table.

Why real charging can be slower than Apple’s target
Apple says its tests used preproduction phones and drained units. The company also states that charging time varies with the adapter, settings, use and environmental conditions. The published percentages are therefore approximate targets under a specified setup, not a promise that every compatible third-party charger will reach the same point in the same time.

- Temperature: Fast charging may not work when the iPhone is too cold or too hot. Move it to a moderate-temperature location and let it stabilize.
- Active use: Gaming, video recording, hotspot use and navigation consume power while the adapter is supplying it, extending the time to a given percentage.
- Battery state: Charging generally slows as the battery approaches a high state of charge. Compare sessions from similar starting percentages if you are troubleshooting.
- Shared ports: A second device can reduce the USB-C port’s available output on a multi-port charger.
- Cable limits: A cable with a lower power rating can become the limiting component even when the adapter is correctly specified.
Troubleshooting a charger that is not fast-charging
The phone charges, but slowly
- Confirm the model and compare the adapter with that row in the requirements table.
- Check the adapter’s USB-PD and AVS specifications rather than its headline wattage.
- Test with a cable known to meet the required connector and power rating.
- Disconnect other devices from a multi-port charger and retest.
- Let the phone cool or warm to a normal operating temperature before testing again.
The phone repeatedly starts and stops charging
Inspect both connectors for debris or damage, try another compatible cable and plug the adapter directly into a reliable outlet. If the behavior follows one cable or port, replace that component. If it occurs with multiple known-good setups, Apple Support is the appropriate next step.
A product listing does not mention AVS
For an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max, treat the adapter as unconfirmed. Choose a listing that explicitly states AVS and the required USB-PD level instead of assuming that a 60W label is enough.
What to look for on a charger label
- At least the adapter power level required for your specific model.
- USB-PD support, with USB-PD 3.2 specifically stated for third-party iPhone 18 Pro comparisons.
- AVS support for the newer models that require it.
- A USB-C port whose sustained output remains adequate when other ports are occupied.
- Clear voltage-and-current output profiles, not only a total wattage headline.
- A cable with the appropriate connector and power rating.
If any of these details are missing, the safest conclusion is “not established,” not “compatible.”
Bottom line for choosing your iPhone charger
Start with the iPhone model, then match the charging method, protocol, sustained output and cable. For iPhone 18 Pro models, require a 60W-capable cable and a 60W-or-higher AVS adapter, using USB-PD 3.2 as the third-party comparison threshold. For the iPhone 17 family, check the 40W continuous and 60W maximum guidance; for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, the listed threshold is 20W or higher. Earlier iPhones use different cable and USB-PD combinations. A charger is a confirmed fast-charge choice only when all of those details—not just the wattage printed on the box—line up.
